Expansion projects completed:

We have invested heavily in Scotch whisky production since 2007. In the six financial years to 2011, Diageo made total capital investments in its operations in Scotland of £600 million (= €766 million at today’s prices).

This included building a new malt whisky distillery at Roseisle on Speyside, a new bottling hall at Leven in Fife, a new cooperage at Cambus near Alloa, and a major expansion of Cameronbridge grain whisky distillery in Fife.

We are currently about half way through our billion pound expansion programme, announced in 2012 and are continuing with the programmes that have already started: the expansion of Glen Ord distillery, Teaninich distillery, the construction of a bio plant for distillery waste at Glendullan in Dufftown and a filling facility at Cambus. We shall also continue with our annual programme of  warehouse construction at Cluny in Fife.

Expansion projects on pause:

We have planning permission to build a new distillery at Alness (next to Teaninich) and at Mortlach in Dufftown as well as for expansion projects at Clynelish. The two new distillery builds, and the expansion at Clynelish, have been put on hold, but planning work will continue and we will proceed with the projects in due course according to the prudent management of our investment.

Strategic approach:

Our long-term investments are naturally planned in phases to give us the ability to adjust to fluctuations in demand and to ensure the right balance between supply and demand.

The weaker global economic environment has impacted the growth of Scotch in certain markets and therefore Diageo will continue to review and adjust the timing of the next phase of our investment programme to manage our Scotch whisky inventory and to retain the alignment between growth in production volumes and growth in demand.

We remain committed to the long term growth of Scotch whisky and will continue to invest to meet that opportunity as appropriate.  The pace of this will constantly be reviewed to ensure we have the right balance between supply and demand in our maturing inventory.
