DIAGEO ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF PRIMA & ULTIMA:

A NEW COLLECTABLE SERIES OF EXQUISITE SINGLE VINTAGE MALT WHISKIES

Only 238 full sets available to purchase through a global registration from 22nd July 2020

Prima & Ultima, the first and the last. This is the first set in a new series of collectable releases of magnificent, incredibly rare Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Each is the first and last of its kind; drawn from a tiny number of highly sought-after casks from celebrated distilleries including Lagavulin, Mortlach and The Singleton of Dufftown.

The eight single vintage malts chosen to open this inaugural series were personally selected by one of the world’s most respected whisky makers, Dr Jim Beveridge OBE. Dr Beveridge is one of Diageo’s most distinguished whisky blenders, widely known for his vast expertise and deeply respected among Scotland’ whisky masters. Dr Beveridge remarked

‘Over the past forty years I have worked intimately with our distilleries across Scotland and I’ve been fortunate enough to witness great change in the whisky industry. Each of the eight whiskies I’ve selected for Prima & Ultima tells a tale of heritage and craftsmanship and I’ve chosen them from distillers of great personal importance to me.’

For the enthusiast, Prima & Ultima is an opportunity to build a collection of rare and historic Scotch on the solid foundation of Dr Beveridge’s expertise – the first time he has curated such a series of single malts; for the collector and connoisseur, it is a gathering of exquisite vintage single malts into an unmissable anthology of spirited tales.

Every bottle in the inaugural Prima & Ultima series has a story to tell and is its own record of this significant period of whisky-making. Dr Beveridge marks the moment coal-firing of stills ended in 1971 at Cragganmore by including in the collection the last cask to be filled with whisky made this way at the distillery. The inclusion of three casks of The Singleton of Dufftown from 1988 marks a time when the grassy, fruit flavours were uncovered in The Singleton character from a new slow-craft technique. This complex, rich whisky is the first 30-year-old released of this kind. The existence of prized 1979 whisky from a silenced Port Ellen, stoically maturing for 40 years, also speaks to the end of an era – and is a nod to the spirit of invention that will return when the beloved distillery will open its doors once again.

During his career at Diageo, Dr Jim Beveridge spent considerable time at Lagavulin to learn how the true distillery character is refined and perfected. The vintage he selected from this distillery comes from a handful of refill American oak hogshead casks filled right around this time, in 1991. A 26-year-old Clynelish from 1993 represents a triumph of his inquiry into how this distillery character reveals its renowned waxiness. His taste for the exceptional also informs this collection: six standout casks of Talisker with a more rounded and gently peated style to the distillery’s smoky signature have been carefully safeguarded for a moment like this since 1988, the last of their kind. Meanwhile, a 1984 cask of Caol Ila, number #5773 to be specific, was the first of a new style, and this bottling tells the story of a decade-long chase for this cask’s recovery. The final addition to this inaugural number, a muscular 25-year-old Mortlach takes its place as one of the last remaining first-fill Pedro Ximenez seasoned oak butt casks from 1994.

There will be an opportunity to own the very first set of the series, one of just 238 full sets, when it goes under the hammer for charity at Sotheby’s online auction from 26th August – 2nd September 2020 in London. Bottle No 1 of each of the eight bottlings has been signed by Dr Jim Beveridge and all proceeds will be donated to Diageo’s charity partner WaterAid.

The inaugural release of The Prima & Ultima Collection will be available to purchase for £20,000 directly through appointed Prima & Ultima agents across the world. A global registration at www.exceptionalwhisky.com will open on Wednesday 22nd July 2020 for whisky collectors to register their interest. Each of the 238 full sets of cask strength bottlings is accompanied by a limited-edition book of personal stories from curator Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE and 20ml samples of each whisky.

The First Release of The Prima & Ultima Collection:

All of the single malt Scotch whiskies included are natural cask strength, non-chill filtered, with no colour added.

Caol Ila 1984

35-Year-Old | 50.8% ABV

Bottled: 9.12.19 | Cask #5773 – Refill European Oak Butt

Number Bottled: 499 | Port Askaig, Isle Of Islay

A 1984 Caol Ila from a single refill cask (#5773) – the first release of a new style at the time, this particular cask was recovered after initially being sold. Mild in aroma, it is rich in texture with a long smoky-spice finish.

Clynelish 1993

26-Year-Old | 49.8% ABV

Bottled: 9.12.19 | Refill American Oak Casks

Number Bottled: 941 | Brora, Sutherland

One of the first casks filled after the mysterious waxiness of Clynelish was understood and perfected. This 1993 small batch release is aromatic and intense, with a waxy, creamy smooth quality that is now the distillery’s hallmark.

Cragganmore 1971

48-Year-Old | 43.7% ABV

Bottled: 10.12.19 | Cask #2301 – First-fill ex-sherry butt

Number Bottled: 352 | Ballindalloch, Speyside

This is the very last cask of whisky which was made at Cragganmore on coal fired stills – cask #2301 – before the switch to oil-fired steam heating. A remarkable piece of history from a single first fill ex-Sherry butt, the whisky’s flavours run deep with hints of dark chocolate, it has a long fresh and drying finish.

Lagavulin 1991

28-Year-Old | 50.1% ABV

Bottled: 10.12.19 | Refill American Oak Casks

Number Bottled: 1013 | Port Ellen, Isle Of Islay

Distilled not long after Lagavulin’s true distillery character was refined and perfected, this whisky comes from a handful of refill American oak hogshead casks filled in 1991. This 28-year-old is the first to highlight the pure golden Lagavulin spirit, thanks to carefully managed cask influence, and has a terrific depth of flavour.

Mortlach 1994

25-Year-Old | 55.1% ABV

Bottled: 10.12.19 | Cask #2652 – First-fill Pedro Ximenez/Oloroso seasoned European Oak Butt

Number Bottled: 389 | Dufftown, Speyside

One of the last remaining first-fill Pedro Ximenez / Oloroso seasoned oak butt casks from 1994. The result is a 25-year-old with robust muscularity – the deep, rich style of mature Mortlach that earned its name as ‘The Beast of Dufftown’, by whisky expert Dave Broom

Port Ellen 1979

40-Year-Old | 51.2% ABV

Bottled: 11.12.19 | Cask #6422 – Refill European Oak Butt

Number Bottled: 436 | Port Ellen, Isle Of Islay

One of the very last 1979 European Oak butts from Port Ellen, selected from the few casks remaining, long after the Islay distillery closed in 1983. It characterises Port Ellen at its peak – expressing to the full the wonderful balance between sweetness, saltiness and smokiness that is elegant and full of flavour after forty years.

Singleton of Dufftown 1988

30-Year-Old | 48.8% ABV

Bottled: 12.12.19 | Refill American Oak Casks

Number Bottled: 469 | Dufftown, Speyside

From three of the last remaining casks filled in 1988, at a time when the new grassy, fruity flavours were uncovered from a new slow-craft technique at this Singleton distillery. This complex, rich whisky is the first 30-year-old released of this kind.

Talisker 1988

31-Year-Old | 51.4% ABV

Bottled: 12.12.19 | Refill American Oak Casks

Number Bottled: 721 | Carbost, Isle Of Skye

A 31-year-old Talisker from the last 6 casks that showed an unusual less peaty, more rounded character, specially put aside in 1988 to mature. A Talisker full of vitality with sweet, smoky and peppery flavours.

Video: Ralfy verkostet anCnoc 16yo 125th Anniversary Edition (Review #832)

Diageo Takes Stride Towards Climate Change Goal with First Carbon Neutral Distillery

Announces Plans for Kentucky Whiskey Distillery Producing Bulleit to be One of Largest Carbon Neutral Distilleries in North America

LEBANON, Ky., June 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Global beverage leader Diageo announced today that its new Kentucky whiskey distillery, which will distill Bulleit, is expected to be carbon neutral – one of the largest in North America, and a first for Diageo. Reinforcing Diageo’s global commitment to reducing its carbon emissions and addressing climate change, the site will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, with a capacity to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year.

The new distillery, which is currently under construction in Lebanon, Kentucky, reflects Diageo’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and moves the company closer to its goal of sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Employing electrode boilers, the site will utilize a mix of renewable electricity sources to power a 72,000 square-foot distillery, dry house, and warehousing facilities. As previously announced „The Diageo Lebanon Distillery“ will have the capability to distill a variety of bourbon and American whiskey brands. Bulleit will be the first and lead brand produced at the new distillery – supplementing existing production at The Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, Kentucky. This move will further strengthen the brand’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

„As a company we know that our long-term sustainable growth depends on reducing our reliance on fossil fuels that contribute to climate change,“ said Perry Jones, President, North America Supply for Diageo. „This groundbreaking undertaking to electrify our operations and then power them with renewable electricity will result in one of the largest carbon neutral distilleries in North America. This is a significant step to strengthen our commitment to minimizing our carbon emissions and will result in an important reduction of Diageo’s environmental impact on a global level.“

„For Bulleit, our passion for sustainability began when we built the Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, where we focus on reducing carbon emissions, water conservation and waste management during production. Then, when we opened our Visitor Experience there, we chose to implement practices like eliminating single use plastics from our bar and sourcing locally-grown organic cocktail garnishes from our onsite garden,“ said Sophie Kelly, SVP Whiskies, Diageo NA. „Our commitment to the environment evolves with the Lebanon distillery, where no fossil fuels will be consumed for the production of Bulleit. This allows us to really begin to double down on our ambition to reinvent category standards.“

To achieve carbon neutrality at the site, Diageo plans to incorporate a variety of features that will avoid annual carbon emissions by more than 117,000 metric tons[1]. This is the equivalent of taking more than 25,000 cars off the road for an entire year[2].

These features include:

  • Electrification of operations:
    • Electrode boilers will enable the avoidance of direct carbon emissions that would normally be generated by the use of fossil-fuel fired boilers. Electrode boilers also offer benefits that include reduced noise pollution and reduction of other air contaminants.
    • All vehicles operated onsite, including trucks and forklifts, will be electric, and charged onsite by renewable energy.
    • 100% of the steam used onsite – for the cooking, distillation and drying process – will be generated by the electrode boilers (which are powered by the renewable electricity)
  • Energy efficiency embedded into facility design:
    • Energy efficiency will be optimized in the new electric boilers
    • Exterior lighting will be solar powered
    • All onsite interior lighting will be light-emitting diode (LED)
    • Warehouse interior lighting will only activate during loading or unloading activities
    • Lowered roofs will minimize heating and cooling requirements
  • Sourcing renewable electricity:
    • Long term contracts with the local utility will allow for the purchase of zero greenhouse gas emission electricity from certified renewable sources.
    • Renewable electricity will be supplied by Inter-County Energy and East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC).
  • Water savings design
    • Site is being designed to be industry-leading in efficiency and minimization of water usage
  • Zero waste to landfill
    • Once operational, the site is designed to minimize use of materials and waste through reuse and recycling, and any residual waste will not be sent to landfill

„I welcome Diageo’s commitment to carbon neutrality and using renewable electric at its Bulleit distillery in Lebanon. This is a notable example of a historic Kentucky industry embracing a new future,“ said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. „To continue the commonwealth’s economic recovery, attract business investment and create jobs for Kentuckians across all counties, it’s important we and our economic development partners provide a cost-competitive energy mix. Energy diversity is something more industries are considering when they choose where to locate, and offering the right mix will help us provide a brighter future for generations to come.“

„We want to extend a warm welcome as Diageo makes this valuable investment in Lebanon-Marion County,“ said Jerry Carter, President and CEO of Inter-County Energy, which will provide electric service to the Lebanon distillery. „Inter-County Energy is proud to work in partnership with Diageo and East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) to understand the energy needs of this facility and to develop innovative ways to meet the sustainability goals of one of the largest renewable energy consumers in Kentucky.“

A Commitment to Sustainability
Committed to decarbonization with approved science-based targets, Diageo is part of a pioneering group of organizations that are championing a green recovery and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, through membership of the United Nations Global Compact, We Mean Business Coalition and other key global advocacy organizations. Also, as mentioned above, as a signatory to RE100, Diageo aims to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In addition, Diageo has also signed onto the global Race to Zero campaign, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company recently joined over 150 multinationals to reaffirm our commitment to Science Based Targets and urge governments around the world to align their COVID-19 recovery efforts with the latest climate science.

Bulleit has a long-standing commitment to sustainability at their current distillery in Shelbyville, KY, which was recently honored with the title of ‚Highly Commended‘ for Sustainable Distillery of the Year at Whisky Magazine’s 2020 Icons of Whisky American Awards. The Shelbyville site includes the first ever industrial solar array in Shelby County, and a focus on reducing their carbon footprint by sourcing local ingredients from local farmers.  In addition, Bulleit implemented thoughtful practices at the Visitor Experience, such as a partnership with the non-profit Oceanic Global to ensure its tasting experience and cocktail bar aligns with The Oceanic Standard (TOS), a badge and certification for venues that have adopted sustainable operating practices and are committed to eliminating single-use plastics.

Investing in Kentucky
Bulleit continues a strong trajectory of growth, with the brand continuing to gain share, and global volume up more than six percent year over year[3]. Diageo broke ground on the $130 million distillery in July of 2019, and the site is expected to be fully operational in 2021. Once fully operational the facility will employ 30 full-time team members. Since 2014, Diageo has invested more than $500 million in Kentucky. This facility will supplement the company’s other Kentucky operations: Stitzel-Weller in Louisville, and The Bulleit Distilling Company and Visitor Experience in Shelbyville.

Loch Lomond Whiskies pay tribute to 149th Open

Independent distiller adds special edition to range

Loch Lomond Whiskies, the Official Spirit of The Open, has unveiled a new special edition single malt to mark the Championship that was due to take place in July this year.

The Loch Lomond 12 Year Old The Open Special Edition 2020 was created to celebrate The 149th Open at Royal St George’s in Kent, which has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the first time since WWII that the Championship will not be played.

The special edition, crafted by master blender Michael Henry, showcases Loch Lomond’s unique straight neck pot still, and is created from a Chardonnay wine yeast, a fermentation process that’s rarely used in whisky distilling as it requires greater time to achieve the final liquid. Full of lively flavour, hints of grapefruit and vanilla syrup are balanced with cinnamon and lime juice.

Priced at £50 RRP with an ABV of 46%, 3,000 limited-edition bottles will be released globally in early July, giving both whisky and golf fans the opportunity to experience The Open in spirit from their homes.

Loch Lomond Whiskies’ became The Official Spirit of The Open in 2018, and although the Championship will not be played as planned in 2020, Loch Lomond’s Open Special Edition pays tribute to golf’s original championship. The 149th Open will now be played at Royal St George’s in July 2021, with The 150th Open at St Andrews moving to 2022.

Colin Matthews, CEO of Loch Lomond Group, said:

“Of course we, like thousands of golf enthusiasts around the globe, were disappointed to learn of the cancellation of The Open this year, but given the current circumstances, it’s absolutely the right decision.

“Our Loch Lomond 12 Year Old The Open Special Edition 2020 is a very special limited edition, showcasing Loch Lomond’s style beautifully, and will allow thousands of golf and whisky fans around the world to raise a dram during these difficult, unprecedented times.

“We are very proud of our partnership with The Open, allowing us to raise awareness of the Loch Lomond Whiskies range among golf lovers all over the world. We are very much looking forward to visiting Royal St George’s for the first time as the Spirit of The Open next year.”

Michael Henry, Master Distiller added:

“It has been a real pleasure crafting this limited edition to mark The 149th Open. We are one of very few distilleries currently using wine yeasts in the fermentation process, which brings a unique and vibrant flavour to the finished liquid. As a distillery we are perfectly placed to be able to develop these rare expressions, which is ideally suited to our preference for longer fermentation times, combined with the control we have over the final character using our straight-necked stills.”

Loch Lomond Whiskies, based in Alexandria near Loch Lomond, agreed a five-year partnership with The R&A, organisers of The Open, in February 2018.  Known as “The One”, The Open is the most international of the major championships with qualifying events across five continents.

Neil Armit, Chief Commercial Officer at The R&A, said:

“Loch Lomond Whiskies’ special edition products have already proven to be a hit with fans of The Open, bringing together two of Scotland’s greatest exports beautifully: golf and whisky.

“Although we will have to wait until next year to visit Royal St George’s, fans will still be able to enjoy a taste of The Open from home until we all meet again at the famous Kent links in 2021.”

The Loch Lomond 12 Year Old The Open Special Edition 2020 will launch for sale in early July. For more information, please visit www.lochlomondwhiskies.com

TSB: Die 10 meistverkauften Scotch-Marken

0

  • Platz 10: Bell’s
  • Platz 9: Label 5
  • Platz 8: Black & White
  • Platz 7: J&B
  • Platz 6: Dewar’s
  • Platz 5: William Lawson’s
  • Platz 4: Grant’s
  • Platz 3: Chivas Regal
  • Platz 2: Ballantine’s
  • Platz 1: Johnnie Walker

Serge verkostet: Caol Ila Teil 1

  • Caol Ila 9 yo (46%, James Eadie Small Batch, bourbon hogshead, 2020): 87 Punkte
  • Caol Ila 6 yo 2013/2019 (59%, Dràm Mor, 312 bottles): 88 Punkte
  • Cl13 (54.6%, Elixir Distillers, Elements of Islay, refill butts): 87 Punkte
  • Caol Ila 10 yo 2009/2020 (48%, Elixir Distillers, Reserve Casks, Parcel No.2, hogsheads): 87 Punkte
  • Caol Ila 9 yo 2009/2019 (59.5%, The Single Malts of Scotland, hogshead, cask #318285, 231 bottles): 85 Punkte

Diageo, Brown-Forman und Beam Suntory stoppen Werbung auf sozialen Medien

0

Whiskyfun: Angus verkostet Glen Grant, Teil 2

  • Glen Grant 5 yo 1967 (100 proof, Peter Thompson Ltd, 1970s): 88 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 8 yo (100 proof, Gordon & MacPhail, late 1970s): 91 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 15 yo (100 proof, Gordon & MacPhail, -/+1975): 93 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 46 yo 1972/2019 (44.8%, Berry Brothers ‘Exceptional Casks’, cask #8240, refill oloroso sherry butt, 159 bottles): 91 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 31 yo 1970/2001 (55.4%, Adelphi, cask #1036, sherry): 91 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 1963/1986 (59.4%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #9.2): 92 Punkte
  • Glen Grant 40 yo 1959/1999 (48.9%, Whisky Club of Austria, released in 2007, 22 bottles): 94 Punkte

Teeling Whiskey Distillery to Re-open with Special Celebratory Gift for First 500 visitors

Teeling Whiskey is very proud to announce that it will be re-opening its award winning Teeling Whiskey Distillery visitor experience on June 29th. As part of the re-opening celebrations the first 500 visitors to take a tour of the distillery will  receive a special celebratory gift to mark the re-opening.

Lisa Jameson, General Manager of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery was joined today at the distillery by Caroline O’Keeffe, Dublin Manager at Fáilte Ireland, to mark the occasion. The Teeling Whiskey Distillery was recently singled out by Fáilte Ireland as a world class attraction that was deserving of a €200,000 grant. Named as one of the recipients of Fáilte Ireland’s Dublin Surprising Stories grant scheme, the money awarded will be used by Teeling Whiskey to evolve the distillery’s visitor experience in 2020.

Earlier this year Lisa Jameson was also honoured as the World’s Best Distillery Visitor Centre manager for 2020 at the Icons of Whisky Awards in London. The honour for Lisa Jameson follows on from a very successful 12 months for the Teeling Whiskey Distillery, which has continued to establish its world class reputation with a whole host of international honours. This included Teeling Whiskey Distillery winning ‘Best Visit’ in Ireland at the CIE Awards in January.

Commenting on the re-opening Lisa Jameson, General Manager of Teeling Whiskey Distillery said:

“After a tough 3 months, it feels great to be finally able to reopen our doors and bring the distillery experience back to life. We are hoping that over the next few weeks and months, people will feel confident to come and support their local cultural attractions and we will be giving the first 500 people through the door a special gift to thank them for their support. I also want to thank Fáilte Ireland for their continued support  and for partnering  with us to evolve our distillery experience so that we can continue to provide a world class experience to all our visitors.”

Commenting on the re-opening Caroline O’Keeffe, Dublin Manager Fáilte Ireland said:

„As we re-open our tourism industry, initiatives like Fáilte Ireland’s Dublin Surprising Stories grant scheme will play a huge part in helping businesses reconnect with tourists. The awarding of the grant to Teeling Whiskey Distillery allows them to further develop the visitor attraction by making it accessible in multiple languages. This will greatly enhance the experience for international tourists when they return to Ireland.“

Teeling Whiskey Distillery tours will start again from 10am on Monday 29th June with smaller tour group sizes going on the half an hour to allow for a more spacious and enjoyable tour experience for all visitors. A family private tour option has been added to the offering for family groups who want an individual private tour and tasting experience. All bookings must be made online at https://teelingwhiskey.digitickets.ie/tickets or through direct contact with the Distillery itself. The café and gift shop will continue to be open for people to enjoy as part of the tour or for locals. Please visit www.teelingdistillery.com for more information.
