Über Veröffentlichungen von Whiskys, die anderswo als bei uns geschehen, berichten wir nur in ausgewählten Fällen – nämlich dann, wenn der Marktstart über die Region hinaus von Interesse ist.
Beim neuen Buchanan’s Select 15yo, der in der letzten Woche in den USA von Diageo vorgestellt wurde, ist das der Fall, denn er kann als Zeichen für eine zukünftige Marktentwicklung gesehen werden, die wir wohl auch bei uns in Europa zu spüren und zu kosten bekommen werden: Die Renaissance von Blended Malts und wohl auch Blends.
Für jene, die sich noch nicht so intensiv mit dem Wasser des Lebens beschäftigt haben: Blended Malts sind das Mittelding zwischen Blends (Malt Whiskys, die mit Grain Whisky angereichert werden) und Single Malts (Malt Whisky, der nur aus einer einzigen Destillerie stammt). Blended Malt ist ein Mischung aus verschiedenen Single Malts, aber ohne Beigabe von Grain.
Blended Malts sind für die Getränkeindustrie aus verschiedenen Gründen recht interessant: Zunächst einmal sind sie eine zur Zeit relativ unbekannte Kategorie, in der man noch viel Neuland betreten kann (worüber sich auch das Marketing freut). Dann, und das ist vielleicht noch wichtiger, gestatten Blended Malts, den Whisky aus einem breiteren Portfolio zu komponieren – wichtig in einer Zeit, in der die Lagerbestände bei den meisten Destillerien, was länger gereifte Whiskys angeht, eher bescheiden sind und man oft über den Tellerrand einer einzigen Destillerie hinausblicken muss, um das gewünschte Ergebnis zu erhalten.
Für Diageo ist der Buchanan’s Select 15yo zwar nicht der erste Blended Malt in ihrem Angebot (Johnnie Walker Green Label ist – übrigens als einziger in der Produktlinie – ebenfalls einer), aber der Launch dieser Abfüllung, von der die untenstehende englischsprachige Presseaussendung berichtet, ist durchaus als überregional bedeutend anzusehen.
Das Blended Malts eine auch geschmacklich sehr interessante Kategorie sein können, zeigen auch unabhängige Abfüller. Douglas Laing zum Beispiel, mit seiner Remarkable Regional Malts Serie (The Epicurean, Timorous Beastie, um nur zwei daraus zu nennen), setzt dabei auf Geschmackskompositionen, die den Charakter der schottischen Whiskyregionen zeigen sollen. Wemyss hat im Vorjahr ebenfalls Blended Malts auf den Mark gebracht, und auch manch andere Abfüller haben Blended Malts im Portfolio.
Blended Malts werden uns über die nächsten Jahre wohl öfter begegnen als bislang, und man darf darauf gespannt sein, wie sich diese in der Gunst der Konsumenten schlagen werden.
