Wer schon einmal bei Caol Ila war weiß, dass das Besucherzentrum dort nicht gerade zu den Highlights gehört. Der schmucklose Zweckraum ist ziemlich düster und wenig einladend.

Nun hat uns die Brennerei mitgeteilt, dass heute der Bauantrag für den Umbau des Besucherzentrums (im Rahmen des großen Investitionsprogramms bei Diageo), der faktisch einem Neubau gleichkommt, eingereicht wurde. Es geht darum, das Besucherzentrum im (ohnehin nicht mehr zur Lagerung genutzen) Warehouse einzurichten – mit einem Zugang von oben über eine Fußgängerbrücke, die vom ebenfalls neu zu bauenden Parkplatz oberhalb der Brennerei zugänglich sein wird. Auch eine Bar soll im Lagerhaus eingerichtet werden, mit einem tollen Blick über die Meerenge zwischen Islay und Jura, wie die Mitteilung vermerkt.

Caol Ila Distillery visitor experience transformation plans submitted

Plans to transform the visitor experience at Caol Ila Distillery have been formally submitted to Argyll & Bute Council today (Wednesday 14 November).

The detailed Planning Application sets out proposals to significantly expand and enhance the experience the distillery offers to tourists from around the world. The submission of formal plans follows a community engagement event last month at which initial plans were shared with local residents. Pre-application consultation has also been carried out with the local authority.

If approved, the new state-of-the-art visitor experience will be created inside the Caol Ila warehouse, including a  bar with stunning views across the Sound of Islay. The visitor centre will be entered via a foot-bridge into the roof of the warehouse, linking to new parking facilities on the hill above the distillery, which will be discreetly located and carefully landscaped to manage visual impact and traffic movement.

In April Diageo announced a £150 million investment programme – the biggest ever seen in Scotch whisky tourism – to transform distillery visitor experiences across Scotland. The investment will see the creation of a global Johnnie Walker brand experience in Edinburgh.

Whisky from Diageo’s distilleries all over Scotland contribute to Johnnie Walker, but four distilleries – Caol Ila, Glenkinchie, Cardhu and Clynelish – will be linked directly to a new Johnnie Walker global visitor experience in Edinburgh, representing the four corners of Scotland and the regional flavour variations that are part of Johnnie Walker.

Caol Ila has supplied single malt Scotch whisky for Johnnie Walker for over a century and today it continues to provide the key smoky, peaty flavour that is a signature characteristic of Johnnie Walker.

Along with the Edinburgh global attraction, the Four Corner distilleries will create a unique Johnnie Walker tour of Scotland, encouraging visitors to the capital city to also travel to the country’s extraordinary rural communities.

Diageo’s other single malt distillery visitor centres across Scotland will also receive investment in their visitor experiences as part of the programme.

The company is also investing a further £35 million to bring back the iconic lost distilleries of Port Ellen, on Islay, and Brora, in the highlands, which will even further enhance the global reputation of Scotch whisky and Scotland around the world.
