Hohe Auszeichnung für Dr. Jim Beveridge, dem Master Whisky Maker von Johnnie Walker: Er wurde von der britischen Königin mit der prestigeträchtigen Orden Order of the British Empire – Officer (OBE) für seine Verdienste um den Scotch Whisky ausgezeichnet. Wir gratulieren auch im Namen unserer Leser dazu ganz herzlich.

Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Dr Jim Beveridge, was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen today for his outstanding service to the Scotch whisky industry.

Recognising a remarkable career spanning almost four decades with the world’s leading distilling company Diageo, Dr Beveridge was presented with his OBE medal by Her Majesty during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

During his career Dr Beveridge has established himself as one of the most highly respected figures in the industry, renowned for his skill and dedication to quality, as well as his considered and unassuming manner.

The accolade comes as Johnnie Walker, the world’s most popular Scotch whisky, prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2020. Dr Beveridge is only the sixth person in two centuries of the company’s history to have held the position of Master Blender, the first being founder John Walker himself.

Next year, Dr Beveridge will celebrate 40 years with Johnnie Walker. To mark the occasion, Jim has been asked to work with his team on a unique 40 year old whisky using some of the rarest Scotch in the Johnnie Walker archives.

Based at Diageo’s blending rooms in Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, Dr Beveridge, leads a team of 12 blenders responsible for the quality and consistency of all the company’s Scotch whisky brands. He also works closely with distillers, coopers, coppersmiths and all the craftspeople involved in producing the finest Scotch whisky.

He has been the recipient of several industry accolades, including being inducted into the World Whisky Hall of Fame in 2015 and in 2016 he was named Master Blender of the Year by the International Whisky Competition for the second consecutive year, a first in the history of the competition.

Commenting on the receiving the award Dr Beveridge dedicated it to his colleagues across the Scotch whisky industry. He said:

“It was a wonderful experience to receive this award from Her Majesty the Queen [tbc] and it is an honour that I am delighted to receive on behalf of all the people I have worked with in Scotch whisky over the past four decades.

“Scotch truly is a team effort at every step from grain to glass and it is a privilege to work in such a special industry. I dedicate this award to all the women and men in our distilleries, coppersmiths, cooperage, warehouses and bottling halls across Scotland who are all responsible for making Johnnie Walker.”

Congratulating Dr Beveridge on receiving his award, Diageo Chief Executive Ivan Menezes, said:

“This is a very special day for Jim and his family and I am delighted to congratulate them on behalf of everyone at Diageo.

“Jim is renowned in the Scotch industry for his dedication to the craft of whisky-making and for the incredible whiskies he creates for Johnnie Walker, but he is also known as an exceptional colleague and friend to the people he works with. This is worthy recognition of an extraordinary career spanning four decades.”

Los geht es jetzt bei der englischen Cooper King Distillery: Dort hat man die ersten Fässer mit selbstgebranntem Whisky gefüllt. Das kleine Start-Up Unternehmen aus Yorkshire hat sich dafür besondere Fässer ausgesucht – solche, die zuvor mit fortifiziertem australischen Wein befüllt waren. Dazu hat man auch Sherryfässer aus Spanien gewählt, und mit einer Destillerie aus Kentucky einen Liefervertrag für Bourbonfässer ausgehandelt.

Self-built English distillery fills first whisky casks

 A start-up English distillery has filled its first casks from across the globe with malt spirit to produce its inaugural single malt whisky.

The exclusive casks have previously held Australian fortified wine and Spanish sherry, and the news comes as the Yorkshire-based distillery also announces a partnership with an American whiskey distillery in Kentucky, enabling the distillery to source unique bourbon casks to add to the character of the maturing spirit.

Chris Jaume, co-founder at Cooper King Distillery comments:

“Filling these first casks is the culmination of five years of hard work and the start of a wonderful whisky journey. We have already received fantastic feedback on the malt spirit and are confident we’ve chosen the best casks for the first batches of whisky.”

Having mashed, fermented and then distilled the unaged spirit in the only copper pot still outside of Australasia, Cooper King Distillery have worked with the last remaining cooper in the UK, Alastair Simms of neighbouring Ripon, to cooper the small 100-litre casks for the North Yorkshire distillery. The spirit will remain in cask for three to five years, with the founding duo committed to releasing the whisky only when it reaches peak maturity.

The new-make spirit being filled into the casks has already had acclaimed reviews from distillers as far as Australia including Dean Jackson known as “the spirit whisperer” and Katie Groves of world-famous whisky bar and shop Milroy’s of Soho.

Katie Groves comments:

“This new-make is delicious and shows promise of a great whisky. We’re incredibly excited about the future of Cooper King Distillery.”

The first cask is being bottled exclusively for the distillery’s Founders‘ Club members. The crowdfunded approach was set up allow craft spirit lovers a unique opportunity to become part of the Cooper King family and help make English distilling history.

Anyone who joins the club as a ‘Copper’ member will receive a bottle of the inaugural whisky, and with less than 40 spaces available, the distillery urges whisky fans to join soon. 

The first self-built gin and whisky distillery in England, Cooper King Distillery had a team of friends, family and Founders’ Club members working together on the construction.

Following completion, the first batch of Dry Gin was released in May 2018 and has gone on to win multiple taste and design awards.

Cooper King Distillery is filling its inaugural casks at the same time fellow Yorkshire whisky distillery Spirit of Yorkshire is bottling its own.

Diageo informiert uns über eine bemerkenswerte Auktion bei Sotheby’s namens “The Ultimate Whisky Collection” – dort wurde ein 40 Jahre alter Brora zum bisher höchsten bislang für einen Brora erzielten Preis an einen nicht genannt werdenden Bieter versteigert: £54,450.

BRORA 40-YEAR-OLD BREAKS WORLD RECORD AT AUCTION

One of the world’s rarest and most collectible whiskies sells for £54,450, the highest ever for a Brora bottling, on its 200th Anniversary, one year before the famous closed distillery reopens

Today, a rare bottle of single malt Scotch whisky from the closed distillery of Brora was sold for £54,450: the highest price ever paid for a single bottle from the distillery. 

Celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, Brora was closed in 1983 but is set to reopen next year after a meticulous brick-by-brick restoration over three years.  Whisky distilled before Brora’s closure is often highly prized by global collectors and aficionados where bottles are reaching top prices at auctions around the world.

When released in 2014, the record-breaking Brora 40 Year old 1972 Vintage was one of just 160 bottles from the distillery, its rarest and oldest ever release, priced at £6,995. The whisky is presented in a crystal decanter and housed in a handcrafted wooden case created by the Queen’s cabinet makers at N.E.J Stevenson Ltd. 

The whisky was sold to an unknown bidder at Sotheby’s “The Ultimate Whisky Collection” Auction in London on 24rd October. Also included in the auction was a full set of Brora Annual Releases which as a whole reached another significant £30,129. 

Another Brora 40 Year Old was released this year, to celebrate its 200th anniversary: a 1978 vintage limited edition of just 1819 bottles and available at global whisky specialists at the RRSP of £4,500. 

Sotheby’s Whisky Expert Jonny Fowle comments:

„This was one of the highlights sold in the Sotheby’s auction – the largest single collector whisky auction ever. With the 200th anniversary of Brora celebrated this year, and the distillery’s opening next year, I have seen significant interest in Brora from collectors around the world as we look ahead to an exciting time for the distillery.“

James Mackay, Head of Rare & Collectible Spirits at Diageo, (the owner of Brora) comments:

„For many, Brora is considered a masterpiece of the whisky world due to the quality of its liquid and its extremely rare status. The distillery will enter a new era from next year when Brora’s historic stills will once again create spirit.“

Serge verkostet: Aberlour, gut gereift und aus dem Sherryfass

Was kann denn da schiefgehen? Das möchte man sich denken, wenn man die Headline liest. Denn gut gereifte Aberlour aus einem Sherryfass haben ja die Tendenz, ganz wohlschmeckende Tropfen zu sein.

Nun, so ganz ins Schwarze getroffen hat Serge Valentin dann heute mit seiner ursprünglichen Auswahl nicht, oder besser gesagt: Man kann es auch als Abfüller nicht ganz so treffen, wie man es will – denn die ersten beiden Bottlings werden eher durchschnittlich bewertet. Erst ein Aberlour aus den 60ern, den Serge dann als As aus dem Ärmel zaubert, kann der Session dann die Krone aufsetzen.

TTB-Neuheit: Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve

Nach einer kurzen Flaute gibt es wieder etwas Neues aus der us-amerikanischen TTB-Datenbank zu vermelden: Von Glenlivet könnte in absehbarer Zeit ein neue in karibischen Rumfässern gefinishter Whisky erscheinen. Darauf deutet zumindest der Eintrag für den The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve hin, der dort angelegt wurde. Was vielleicht auch erwähnenswert ist: Nicht der gesamte Whisky in dieser Abfüllung hat ein Rumfinish erhalten, auf dem Rückseitenlabel wird angegeben, dass nur ein Teil des Whiskys so gefinisht wurde.

Der Whisky wird mit 40% Alkoholstärke abgefüllt und soll laut Label süße und tropische Noten zeigen. Hier die Etiketten:

Wie üblich der Hinweis zu den TTB-Einträgen: Dass ein Label in der TTB-Datenbank eingetragen wurde, bedeutet nicht automatisch, dass die Abfüllung dann auch erscheinen wird. Es ist allerdings ein sehr starker Hinweis darauf.

Aus dem Jahr 1973 stammt der bislang älteste Whisky der Brennerei Glen Scotia in Campbeltown, die vor kurzem gemeinsam mit Loch Lomond in chinesischen Besitz wechselte: Der Glen Scotia 45yo ist soeben erschienen und gegen Ende des Monats bei ausgesuchten Händlern weltweit erhältlich.

In seinem Fall ergibt das Wort „limitiert“ tatsächlich Sinn: Nur 150 Flaschen sind von ihm abgefüllt worden, und zwar mit 43,8% Alkoholstärke. Gereift ist der Whisky in refill bourbon barrels, bevor er im Jahr 2011 in First Fill Bourbon Barrels umgefüllt wurde, um ein entsprechendes Finish zu erhalten.

Die Tasting Notes lesen sich sehr poetisch: in der Nase meeresgetränkter Basalt, reife Ananas, grüne Äpfel, Rose, Vanille und warme Eiche, danach am Gaumen Karamell, Ananas, Mango, Wassermelone, Vanille und Honig.

Wer den Glen Scotia 45yo kaufen will, muss dafür 3.795 Pfund auf den Tresen legen.

Auf ihrer Website stellt die Highland-Destillerie heute die zweite Ausgabe ihrer Decades-Abfüllung vor, Tomatin Decades II. Wie bereits in der ersten Ausgabe wählte man hier Fässer aus fünf Jahrzehnten der Produktion bei Tomatin aus.

Ausgewählt wurden insgesamt 21 Ex-Bourbon-, Ex-Sherry-Fässer und re-charred Fässer aus französischer Eiche. Für Graham Eunson, Distillery Operations Director, war es eine große Herausforderung, aus so wenigen Fässer das Gleichgewicht der Geschmacksprofile zu erzielen. Das Ergebnis, so lesen wir, ist ein reichhaltiger und komplexer Whisky mit vielen Fruchtaromen mit einem Hauch von süßem Gebäck und Holzspänen, sowie einem langen, wachsartigen, tropischen Finish.

Abgefüllt mit 46 % Vol., ist Tomatin Decades II eine limitierte Abfüllung. Exakt 3.600 Flaschen sind im Einzelhandel mit einer Preisempfehlung von £175 (etwa. 200€) erhältlich. Und hoffentlich auch bei uns auf dem europäischen Festland.

Forscher von AMBER, dem an das Trinity College Dublin angeschlossene SFI-Forschungszentrum für Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research, haben eine neue Methode zur Gewinnung von Graphen entwickelt. Das Team untersuchte eine Reihe von alkoholischen Flüssigkeiten für den Prozess. Sie stellten fest, dass Irish Whiskey – in diesem Fall Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey – die besten Ergebnisse lieferte.

Graphen ist eines der dünnsten und stärksten Materialien der Welt. Es hat einzigartige mechanische und elektrische Eigenschaften. Seine Leitungseigenschaften eröffnen Einsatzmöglichkeiten in Computern, Smartphones und Sensoren. Und sollte der Absatz von Irish Whiskey nicht die erwarteten Höhen erreichen, könnte sich hier eine neue verwendung finden. Ob mit Scotch und Bourbon vergleichbare Ergebnisse bei der Herstellung von Graphen erzielt werden können, scheint noch nicht erforscht zu sein. Und wir vermuten, dass dies nicht in en Aufgabenbereiche des AMBER in Dublin fallen wird.

In einer Aussendung gab der unabhängige Abfüller Douglas Laing soeben bekannt, dass man die Strathearn Distillery in den schottischen Highlands gekauft habe. Die Brennerei sei zu 100% in den Besitz des Familienunternehmens übergegangen. Man will aber die Pläne für die eigene Brennerei in Glasgow unabhängig davon weiterverfolgen.

Douglas Laing & Co, independent Scotch Whisky firm, today announces 100% ownership of Strathearn Distillery.

Established in 1948, the award-winning family business has been celebrated to date as a leading blender and bottler of small batch, hand-crafted Single Cask and Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies. The Strathearn acquisition marks the first Distillery in the Douglas Laing portfolio, whilst plans for the firm’s recently-announced Distillery project in Glasgow continue to progress.

Highland region and Perthshire-based Strathearn Distillery began production in 2013, and was a pioneer of the “craft distilling” scene. The multi-functional site encompasses distillation, warehousing and bottling, with “hand-crafted” values at the heart of its ethos.

Äußerst seltene Macallan-Fässer bei Bonhams in Hongkong

Im nächsten Monat kommen bei der ‚Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky‘ Auktion bei Bonhams in Hongkong einige äußerst rare und seltene Whiskys zur Versteigerung. Mittlerweile haben wir uns an die exorbitanten Preise für einzelne Flaschen gewöhnt. Doch der Trend geht in Richtung Fass-Versteigerung. Die hier aufgerufenen Preise sprengen dann auch den bisher gekannten Rahmen.

Angeboten wird ein Refill European Sherry Hogshead Cask der Macallan Distillery. Dieses Fass No. 6980 wurde am 3. Mai 1989 befüllt und lagert seitdem im Ware House der Macallan Distillery. Würde es heute abgefüllt werden, würde es 261 Flaschen ergeben. Bonhams erwartet, dass der Hammer erst bei einer Summe zwischen 410.000 und 530.000 € fällt.

Für eine etwas kleinere Summe könnte das American Hogshead Cask no. 13408 der Macallan Distillery ersteigert werden. Dieses Fass wurde am 25 September 1997 befüllt und lagert momentan im Ware House # MA 31 der Macallan Distillery. Heute abgefüllt würde es 279 Flaschen ergeben, die erwartete Aktionssumme liegt zwischen 300.000 und 390.000 €.

Für den etwas kleineren Geldbeutel finden sich in der Auktion einige rare, gesuchte und deshalb auch preisintensive Abfüllung der Brennereien Karuizawa, Yamazaki, Bowmore und natürlich auch hier wieder Maccallan, wie in der Gesamtübersicht der Auktion zu sehen ist.

Der Komiker Nick Offerman ist nicht erst seit kurzer Zeit Gallionsfigir für Lagavulin-Whisky. Und nicht erst einmal hat er sehr unterhaltsame Videos für Lagavulin gedreht (jede Menge davon können Sie hier zusammengefasst erleben).

Neu ist, dass Nick Offerman in den USA einen eigenen, elfjährigen Lagavulin gewidmet bekommen hat.
