Tabea’s Secrets bringt mit “Heavenly Peated” einen Tormore aus einem peated Amarone Cask auf den Markt
Hinter der Marke Tabea’s Secrets verbirgt sich die unabhängige Abfüllerin Tabea Dalfuß, die man seit vielen Jahren als Ausstellerin und Tasting Hostess auf den Whiskymessen Deutschlands erleben darf. Mit ihren eigenen Whiskys erfüllt sie sich nun ihre Whisky-Träume – so auch mit der neuesten Abfüllung “Heavenly Peated”.
Tabea selbst ist seit einer bestimmten Abfüllung von Cooper’s Choice großer Fan von rauchigem Tormore, also hat sie kurzerhand selbst einen angefertigt. Dafür wurde ein Tormore in ein Amarone Octave Cask eingeführt, das vorher für ganze 12 Monate von einem stark rauchigen Islay Whisky belegt war (Experiment #22, McNeill’s Prototype). Nach nun
263 Tagen im Fass konnte der Tormore dezente Rauchnote aufnehmen, zusammen mit den Vorzügen eines Amarone Casks. Lest nun die Notes der Abfüllerin:
Nose: Der Herbst zieht mit diesem Whisky ein, seine tiefe, braune Süße verführt die Sinne. Der Duft von Rohrzucker und Ahorn-Pekannuss-Kuchen liegt schwer in der Luft, begleitet von getrockneter Pflaume und Feige. Ein Hauch dunkler Schokolade und Räucherspeck mit einer Glasur aus Waldbeeren verwebt sich mit frischer Zitrone und Estragon.
Taste: Beim ersten Schluck entfaltet sich ein süßer Schokobrownie, begleitet von Karamellpudding und einem Hauch Lagerfeuerrauch. Malz und gebrannte Mandeln tanzen auf der Zunge und hinterlassen eine wärmende Spur.
Abgang: Der Abgang verblasst langsam, doch der Lagerfeuerrauch bleibt in Erinnerung. Räucheraromen von Schinken vermischen sich mit einer brotigen Malzigkeit, während fruchtige Preiselbeeren und getrocknete Feigen ein letztes Mal auf der Zunge kitzeln. Ein Whisky, der den Herbst eindrucksvoll einleitet und begleitet.

Sazerac x Blockbar Hurricane Relief Auction
n late September, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm sweeping across the Southeast leaving behind catastrophic damage. The storm caused devastating floods in Western North Carolina and surrounding areas and led to the loss of more than 200 lives. Besonders betroffen sind dabei die USA als Land und Cognac als Sparte, aber die Ergebnisse sind nicht überall gleich: So konnte zum Beispiel Bruichladdich in Japan deutliche Zugewinne verbuchen, und insgesamt entwickelten sich für den Konzern auch Märkte wie Deutschland, Frankreich, Griechenland und Spanien über den Prognosen für den Bereich Liqueurs & Spirits, der nach einem Minus von 12,1% in H1 im Q2 insgesamt „nur“ mehr 4,9% zurückging.
Interessant auch, dass man sich ab 2025/2026 seitens des Konzerns wieder hohe einstellige Wachstumszahlen erwartet, und zwar in einem Ausmaß, das die Finanzprognosen für diese Dekade unverändert positiv belassen würde.

Vollmundige Fass-Finishes: Tomintoul aus Sherry- & Portweinfässern
Sanft, sanfter, Tomintoul: Der Single Malt aus dem malerischen Cairngorms Nationalpark ist der Wahl-Whisky für Einsteiger und entspannte Feierabend-Drams. In über 20 Jahren bei Tomintoul hat Master Distiller Robert Fleming den ausgesprochen weichen, malzig-floralen Brennereicharakter maßgeblich geprägt – und zugängliche „gentle drams“ erschaffen, die preisgekrönt und preiswert zugleich sind.
Die Sanftheit seiner Whiskys zu unterstreichen, gelingt Fleming mit vollmundigen Fass-Finishes. Für die limitierte 2009 Edition desTomintoul 14 y.o. kamen Pedro Ximénez Sherry Casks zum Einsatz. Initial reifte der üppige Single Malt mit Noten von Schokoladenganache, Rosinen und Kaffee in Bourbonfässern.
Letzteres gilt auch für den begrenzt verfügbaren Tomintoul 15 y.o., den man für köstliche Noten wie Rhabarberkompott, Vanillepudding und kandierte Mandeln anschließend in Tawny Port Barriques ausbaute.

Bei den Isle of Raasay Hebridean Distillers wird auf der kleinen Isle of Raasay erstmals legal Whisky gebrannt. Und: Der Single Malt der Pionier-Brennerei reift in einer für Schottland neuartigen Fasszusammensetzung. Das Rezept „Na Sia“ (gälisch für „die Sechs“) kombiniert getorfte und ungetorfte Rohbrände, die separat in je drei Fasstypen reifen: First Fill Rye Whiskey Casks, Virgin Chinkapin Oak Casks und First Fill Bordeaux Red Wine Casks.
Mit der Na-Sia-Serie macht Raasay alle zwei Jahre die sechs Komponenten des Rezepts als fassstarke Single Casks zugänglich – die ungetorften Fässer in der ersten, die getorften in der zweiten Jahreshälfte. Für Whisky-Fans? Eine seltene Chance, mitzuerleben, wie sich der Hebriden-Malt weiterentwickelt.
Für das Peated Chinkapin Oak Single Cask werden die eigens angefertigten Fässer aus der nordamerikanischen Eichenart frisch verkohlt und geröstet. Diese Behandlung verleiht dem Single Malt schon früh eine satte Farbe und ein kräftiges, von süßem Toffee, dunklen Früchten und Ingwer geprägtes Aroma, das sich mit anhaltenden Noten von Holzrauch verbindet.
Das Peated First Fill Rye Whiskey Single Cask reifte in Fässern aus der Woodford Reserve Distillery in Kentucky, wo 53 Prozent Roggen in der Maische verwendet werden. Diese entwickeln spannende Pfeffer-, süße Gewürz- und Butterscotch-Noten im von Holzrauch geprägten getorften Raasay Single Malt.
In Rotweinfässern frisch von den „Châteaus“ im Südwesten Frankreichs reifte das Peated First Fill Bordeaux Red Wine Single Cask. Dabei ergänzen den Holzrauch üppige Noten von dunklen sowie Trockenfrüchten und BBQ-Rippchen, die sich harmonisch mit maritimen Einschlägen verbinden.

„Absolutely delightful“: Waterford belebt über 200 Jahre alte Getreidesorte wieder
Die Arcadian Series ist Waterfords Sammlung für außergewöhnliche Abfüllungen. Diese Whiskys entstehen etwa in Kooperation mit unkonventionell arbeitenden Landwirten und Pionieren ihres Handwerks, die Geschmack über Ertragszwang stellen. Oder aber durch Rückbesinnung auf althergebrachte Methoden und Zutaten. Zum Beispiel der Heritage: Goldthorpe 1.1.
Wie sein Vorgänger, der Heritage: Hunter 1.1, wurde er aus einer wiederbelebten Getreidesorte destilliert und von Verkoster-Legende Serge Valentin auf whiskyfun.com mit 90 Punkten geehrt.
Fernab von jeder sehr ähnlich schmeckenden, auf Ertrag gezüchteten modernen Getreidesorte fängt dieser einzigartige Single Malt den Geschmack eines vergangenen Zeitalters ein. Dabei geht Goldthorpe noch weiter in die Vergangenheit zurück als Hunter.
1889 in Yorkshire entdeckt, wurde die hochqualitative Sorte Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Irland in umfangreichen Feldversuchen erprobt, bevor sie der Zeit zum Opfer fiel. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem irischen Landwirtschaftsministerium und Waterfords Mälzerei wurde das Erbgetreide über mehrere Jahre hinweg mühevoll und kostspielig aus einem kleinen Päckchen Saatgut gezüchtet, bis der Ertrag zum Brennen reichte.
162 Fässer konnten schließlich mit dieser echten Rarität befüllt werden, abgefüllt in weltweit nur 6.500 Flaschen.

A LIMITED-EDITION DISTILLERY EXCLUSIVE BOTTLING
[Oban, Scotland, 24th October, 2024] – Oban Distillery is proud to announce the third and final release in The MacLeans Series: Grandson Derek. The distillery exclusive bottling, available from 27th October 2024, has once again been crafted to celebrate the expertise and dedication of three generations of distillers from the MacLean family at the Oban Distillery. 2019 saw the inaugural release of the series, fondly named Old Teddy, this was a bottle to honour the family’s first-generation Master Distiller. Young Teddy was released last year, inspired by his son, Teddy MacLean who followed in his father’s footsteps. The final release, in this coveted series, Grandson Derek, honours a family who have been integral to the Oban distillery for over seventy years.
‘Both my family’s and Oban’s stories have been intertwined for years and this bottling encapsulates our shared history. It’s a testament to my family’s pursuit for perfection and dedication to crafting a whisky that is incredibly special to us all. This final, special edition celebrates our family’s passion for preserving the exceptional quality of Oban, passing it on from generation to generation, a true gift to our distillery fans, that can be enjoyed with their families, as we have done for many years in ours.”

Oban’s signature distillery character, which is delicate yet rich and fruity, explores new avenues of flavour. Its mellow, faintly floral nose is superseded by maritime scents of salt crystal and sea breeze. After a mild nose, its surprisingly powerful first impression of hot, peppery spiciness becomes approachable, whilst the intensity remains part of the flavour.

“Collaborating with the MacLean family on all three whiskies has been a privilege and this expression has uniquely been finished in two types of second-fill wine casks – Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, each cask adding an important dimension of flavour. We were able to develop the fruity side of Oban’s profile through the influence of the casks, showcasing delicious, dried fruit notes and layers of aromatic spice, which perfectly balance the citrus and burnt orange side to Oban.”
Nestled between ancient cliffs and the sea, Oban has been at the heart of the town for the past 230 years, building and celebrating the community that grew around the distillery. The MacLean legacy began in 1953 when Old Teddy, first generation Master Distiller joined Oban. Old Teddy’s wisdom, dedication and fine artisan skills were inherited by his son, Young Teddy who joined in 1985 then grandson Derek in 2017.
This is a limited-edition Single Malt Scotch whisky with only 4,662 bottles available, Oban’s MacLean Series, Grandson Derek will retail at RRSP £210 per 70cl bottle and is bottled at 52.3% ABV, available for purchase exclusively from the distillery on 27th October.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Clear 18 ct gold. Excellent beading and good legs.
Nose: Mellow and nose-drying. The initial top notes are fruity and faintly floral, suggesting hyacinths, but are soon supplanted by maritime scents of salt crystal and sea breeze, with a suggestion of fresh linen. These aromas drift away if a drop of water is added, leaving no clue of the storm to come.
Body: Medium to full.
Palate: A creamy-smooth texture leads to a taste that is quite sweet initially. After the mild nose, it is surprisingly powerful, as a hot, peppery spiciness with an attractive salty edge roars through the sweetness. It’s approachable neat, as the spicy intensity remains part of the flavour without dominating it, yet more easy-going with water, which maintains the sweet-spicy balance while reducing the sheer power of the spiciness.
Finish: Long, hot n’ spicy and lightly drying, the peppery heat of the spice still clear.

BERRY BROS. & RUDD CELEBRATES COASTAL INFLUENCE WITH NEW WHISKY COLLECTION
Berry Bros. & Rudd, the oldest wine and spirits merchant in Britain, has announced its second spirits collection exploring „A Sense of Place“.
‚Coasts & Shores,‘ comprises 25 exceptional bottlings, showcasing a curated selection of whiskies from renowned coastal distilleries worldwide. The latest collection builds on the ‘Glens & Valleys’ selection which was released earlier this year, drawing inspiration from some of Scotland’s most scenic rolling landscapes.
Coasts & Shores celebrates the distinctive flavour characteristics imparted on whisky by vibrant coastal climates. The collection includes a variety of bottlings from the island of Islay, famed for its iconic smoky and peaty profiles. A bottling from Smögen Distillery also marks a return to one of Berry Bros & Rudd’s favourite Swedish distilleries, offering a unique Scandinavian coastal smoke intertwined with hints of brine and a touch of minerality.
The collection is rounded out with a new offering from Sakurao Distillery, a Japanese distillery, which Berry Bros. & Rudd is bottling for the first time. Sakurao is nestled in the coastal town of Hatsukaichi, Japan, near the World Heritage listed island of Miyajima. The single cask bottling was both distilled and matured at the distillery on the shores of Hiroshima Bay.

Caol Ila Distillery
Caol Ila Distillery is sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean, sitting near Port Askaig on the eastern coast of Islay. Pronounced “Cull Eela”, it takes its name from the Gaelic, translating to “Sound of Islay”. Its whisky is respected for its distinctive, smoky Islay style and elegant, fruity balance.
Caol Ila, 2010 Moscatel Finish Cask #311739:
On the nose, ripe peaches intertwine with the aroma of bonfire night toffee apples, underpinned by a damp coastal peat. As the nose develops, hints of sticky-sweet dates emerge. The palate has a wonderfully creamy texture, layered with digestive biscuits and a distinct bonfire smoke. The finish is long and embracing, with more earthy peat and subtle sweet fruit.

Caol Ila, 2010 Pedro Ximénez Finish Cask #311745:
On the nose, an enticing blend of briny sea air and dark, syrupy raisins sets the stage. The initial sip unveils layers of smoky peat, dark chocolate and figs, accompanied by a maritime salinity.
Mid-palate, the sweetness of caramelised brown sugar merges with hints of blackcurrant and subtle oak spices. The finish delivers lingering notes of salted caramel, leaving a lasting
impression of sweet and smoky complexity.

Caol Ila, 2010 Moscatel Finish Cask #311743:
On the nose, briny sea air mingles with golden sultanas and honeyed apricots, underpinned by a gentle waft of peat smoke. An oily, thick texture envelops the palate, where rich, dried fruits – sultanas and figs – are balanced by earthy, smoky undertones. Hints of toasted almonds and dark chocolate add complexity, complemented by a subtle citrus zest. The smoky peat gradually gives way to a lingering sweetness of muscovado sugar and dried figs, leaving a whisper of coastal brine in its wake.

Dalmore
Overlooking the famed Black Isle, Dalmore sits on the shores of the Cromarty Firth, guarded from the North Sea by two precipitous headlands called The Sutors. Dalmore’s whisky is renowned for its densely fruity and cereal characteristics and a past steeped in legacy.

Dalmore, 2012 Barolo Finish Cask #3577
The nose opens with the rich aroma of vanilla custard and fresh red fruits, alongside an intriguing industrial note. The palate has an oily, unctuous texture that clings to the tongue, with a peppery bite balancing the sherry sweetness and Barolo tannins. The combination is as delightful as it is surprising, like eating a custard tart with a side of raspberries whilst gazing at the colossal steel giants of the Cromarty Firth.

Dalmore, 2010 Cask #4022):
The nose opens with a delightful aroma of freshly baked Garibaldi biscuits, rich hazelnut and a hint of crème brûlée. On the palate, a sumptuous wave of milk chocolate emerges, harmonised by the sweetness of caramelised nuts. The mouthfeel is well-rounded, viscous, and indulgent,
leading to a prolonged finish with cosy notes of caramelised nuts and sherry-infused oak.

Inchgower Distillery
Inchgower Distillery was built in 1871 near the fishing village of Buckie on the coast of the Moray Firth. Its whisky has a characteristically coastal style with salinity and spice, redolent of its geographical location. Only one percent of its whisky production is bottled as a single malt.

On the nose, rich aromas of dark chocolate and figs mingle with a touch of brine, a hallmark of Inchgower’s coastal spirit. The palate reveals the Pedro Ximénez cask’s influence, as treacle toffee and ripe plums combine with raisin and sweet dates. Subtle hints of roasted nuts and a whisper of sea spray create a delightful balance, leading to a finish that delivers lingering notes of dried fruit and gentle spice.

Sakurao Distillery
Sakurao Distillery is nestled in the coastal town of Hatsukaichi, Japan, near the World Heritage
listed island of Miyajima. The distillery combines traditional Japanese distillation techniques with modern practices to create delicious, innovative spirits. Although it utilises three maturation sites, this specific cask was both distilled and matured at the distillery on the shores of Hiroshima Bay.

Smögen Distillery
Smögen Distillery is the vision of one man – Pär Caldenby. It sits in Hunnebostrand, on the
Skagerrak coast in western Sweden near the picturesque village of Smögen. Bold and complex, this heavily peated whisky shows a beautiful marriage of maritime and malty characteristics.

Staoisha
Bunnahabhain, where Staiosha is distilled, translates to “mouth of the river”, referring to the Margadale which flows into the Sound of Islay nearby. Although known for a more lightly peated Islay, this expression is made from barley exposed to a higher level of peat smoke and named after Loch Staoisha.

Very occasionally Berry Bros & Rudd come across a cask of whisky that for various reasons we are unable to disclose the origins of, and whilst we would usually try to avoid this scenario, some casks are just too good to pass by. Whiskyexperts war vor Ort und hat seine Ausführungen über seine Arbeit als Blender und seine Herangehensweise an die Komposition neuer Whiskys für Sie auf Video aufgezeichnet.
Den Beginn machen wir mit einem Video über die bislang älteste Abfüllung aus der Destillerie, den GlenAllachie 35yo, eine Komposition drei Pedro Ximénez Sherry Hogsheads, einem Oloroso Sherry Puncheon und zwei Virgin Oak Barrels.
