Es ist die erste Veröffentlichung des deutschen unabhhängigen Abfüllers GourmetPool – und damit haben sie sich gleich ein mächtiges Entree verschafft, konnte ihr Ardbeg 26yo bei Serge Valentin auf Whiskyfun gleich 93 Punkte in der Bewertung erringen.

Erste Veröffentlichung als unabhängiger Abfüller: GourmetPool bringt die Single-Cask-Edition eines 26 Jahre alten Ardbeg auf den Markt
Ursprünglich mit dem Ziel gestartet, aufwendig selektierte Weine unter eigenem Label zu vermarkten, hat sich GourmetPool schon früh zusätzlich dem Thema Whisky gewidmet. Die Vorgabe lautete: ausschließlich limitierte Einzelfassabfüllungen der Spitzendestillen aus Schottland. Dass das erste realisierte und jetzt abgefüllte Fass von Ardbeg kommt, ist nicht zuletzt den geschmacklichen Vorlieben der Macher bei GourmetPool geschuldet.
Entstanden ist ein 26 Jahre alter Ardbeg Whisky mit 52,8% ABV. Der Whisky wurde im Jahr 1996 destilliert und 2022 abgefüllt. Die Anzahl der Flaschen ist auf 129 Stück limitiert.

Es ist schwer, den einzigartigen Geschmack und Geruch eines 26 Jahre alten Ardbegs in Worte zu fassen, aber es ist sicherlich ein Whisky, den man nicht vergessen wird. Die Intensität und Komplexität der Aromen und Geschmacksnoten machen ihn zu einem wahren Meisterwerk und einer Erfahrung, die man sich auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollte.

Der Ardbeg ist der Auftakt zu einer Reihe weiterer geplanter Abfüllungen, für die ein eigenständiges Designkonzept für Label und Verpackung entwickelt wurde. Eigentlich ist Dr. Jim Beveridge bereits Ende 2021 von seinem Posten als Master Blender bei Johnnie Walker zurückgetreten, aber es hat ihn noch einmal gejuckt – und mit dem Johnnie Walker ‘The Master’s Cut’ legt er noch einmal eine von ihm verantwortete Abfüllung vor. Der Blend aus Whiskys aus den Destillerien Roseisle und Cameronbridge klingt nach einer einfachen, zwei Destillerien vereinenden Aufgabe, aber unter dem Motto „doing more with less“ nach seinen eigenen Worten ein Schaustück für die Kunst eines Master Blenders.

Today on World Whisky Day (Saturday 20th May), Johnnie Walker, the world’s No.1 Scotch Whisky[1] is announcing the launch of the ultimate legacy blend from former Master Blender and renowned whisky-maker Dr. Jim Beveridge.
Having retired from his role in December 2021, Jim Beveridge unveils ‘The Master’s Cut’ as a new, super-limited edition Scotch that celebrates the very essence of blending and Scotch; drawing on two whiskies from iconic distilleries to craft a perfectly balanced yet simple blend.
Only 1,000 bottles of Johnnie Walker Master’s Cut will be available to purchase at Johnnie Walker Princes Street later in 2023 – the brand experience in Edinburgh, and in selected markets after that, making it a rare collectible for fans of the iconic Scotch.
Jim blended just two whiskies – the lighter Single Grain Whisky with vanilla notes from one of the oldest distilleries used to blend Johnnie Walker, Cameronbridge, married to the full flavoured fruity Single Malt Whisky from one of the youngest distilleries in Scotland, Roseisle, to create a spectacular, rich, smooth, candy-like Scotch Whisky that embodies the craft of blending. This blend pays homage to the Johnnie Walker past and celebrates the brand’s journey into the future.

“Working in this incredible industry with Johnnie Walker has been an honour and it’s a real privilege to work with the blending team – now led by Master Blender Emma Walker – to create this legacy blend.

Jim Beveridge’s retirement came after a four-decade career in whisky during which time he was responsible for some of the world’s most popular and acclaimed Scotch whisky blends including Johnnie Walker Blue Label. His commitment to developing the ultimate whisky flavours began when he started his career with Johnnie Walker as an analytical chemist before going on to establish himself as one of the most highly respected figures in the industry. In 2019, he was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to the Scotch Whisky industry.

Operating as leaders of industry in their respective fields, the partnership Bowmore® Single Malt Whisky and Aston Martin has already proved to be the perfect marriage of innovation and craftsmanship. The iconic and critically acclaimed Bowmore® has long been an object of desire for whisky afficionados, while the cars produced by ultra-luxury British brand Aston Martin are renowned for both their performance and their style, and exclusivity.
This spring, the two brands will once again unite to produce a unique bottle of one of the distillery’s oldest ever whiskies, the precious spirit housed within a ground-breaking Aston Martin design. A single decanter containing a special assemblage of the 52-year-old vintage whisky has been created as a totally unique objet d’art which will never again be repeated. Like the vessel within which it lies, the whisky is also a one-off – a spectacular marriage of some of the oldest Bowmore vintages from the 1960s, an iconic era of Bowmore distilling, created by Ron Welsh, Master Blender.
Bowmore® ARC-52 Mokume Edition will be offered at auction by Sotheby’s in London on 26 May 2023, with an estimate of £140,000-220,000 ($175,000-275,000). The winning bidder will also have an opportunity to enjoy an experience at Bowmore Distillery and on Islay, experiencing the limited-edition Aston Martin DBX Bowmore Edition, the brand’s first luxury SUV. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to a long-term, dedicated fund to support the people of Islay across a range of vital initiatives with the key goal of supporting and futureproof Islay’s distilling industry for tomorrow by investing in today.
The concept for this one of one Edition takes its name from the Japanese metalworking technique ‘Mokume-Gane’ which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns. The carbon fibre top of the decanter has been created using a unique process which mirrors the mokume texture and mimics a natural aesthetic, much like wood grain or layered natural rock. The finish achieved can be said to imitate both the black rocks in the bay of Loch Indaal, home to the Bowmore Distillery, and also the inside of the charred cask where special 52-year-old whisky was aged. A truly multi-dimensional single malt, this masterpiece has been crafted from spectacular marriage of some of the oldest Bowmore vintages from the 1960s, an iconic era of Bowmore distilling.

Gesagt – getan: feinstes Zuckerrüben-Destillat fand alsbald seinen Weg ins Eichenfass, das dann einige Zeit später dem vierjährigen, ungetorfte Young Malt aus dem Hause St. Kilian Distillers für ein Jahr eine neue Heimat bieten würde. Das Ergebnis kann sich wirklich schmecken lassen: ‚4 Elements‘ – 4 unterschiedliche Nachreifungen mit einem breiten Aromenspektrum von ‚malzig-süß‘ über ‚lakritzige Schärfe‘ bis ‚fruchtiger Gewürzkuchen‘, deren mitunter konträr wirkende Nuancen aber gerade in Kombination ein harmonisches und sehr delikates Gesamtbild abgeben. „Hier komme ich echt mal ins Schwärmen … Der 25 Jahre gereifte Single Malt aus der schottischen Speyside Distillery wird seinem Namen gerecht: der OPUS MAGNUM ist wirklich ein kleines Meisterwerk, enthüllt er doch eine wahre Symphonie von Aromen, die nur die ‚Mastery of Time & Wood‘ – das das perfekte Zusammenspiel von jahrzehntelanger Reifung und der Einfluss von ausgewählten Sherry- und Portweinfässern – hervorbringen können. Das Sherry Cask verlieh dabei dem OPUS MAGNUM eine tiefe Komplexität und fügte Schichten von fruchtiger Süße, Nussigkeit und einen Hauch Tabak hinzu. Die Nachreifung im Portweinfass wiederum trägt zu einer üppigen beerigen Fruchtigkeit und samtig weichen Noten von dunkler Schokolade bei, die den reifen Charakter des Whiskys perfekt ergänzen. „AURUM POTABILE – in der Alchemie als Gold-Essenz bekannt, in diesem Fall das ‚trinkbare Gold‘ aus den Pot Stills einer bekannten Insel-Destille im Südwesten Schottlands. Deren ungetorfter Single Malt aus dem Ex-Bourbon Cask sticht durch seine leichten Getreide- & Gebäcknoten hinter einer ausgeprägten Fruchtigkeit von Zitronen & Orangen hervor. Dass der Island Malt aber auch bei einer zweifachen Reifung in Weinfässern punkten kann, beweist der AURUM POTABILE mit Bravour. Die erste Lagerung im Dornfelder Rotwein-Fass verlieh dem Whisky reichhaltige Aromen von reifen Waldbeeren sowie subtile Gewürz- und Eichennoten. Das Riesling Weißweinfass fügte eine Schicht von Eleganz und Finesse hinzu, mit heller Fruchtigkeit, Orangennoten und einem Hauch von mineralischer Süße. Das Zusammenspiel zwischen Destillat und dem Einfluss der beiden ungleichen Weinwelten verleiht dem Malt eine überraschende Tiefe und Charakter … und wer’s nicht glaubt: Probieren macht klug!“

Limited-Edition Single Pot Still Whiskey Finished in Virgin Garryana Oak Barrels
Irish Distillers, maker of some of the world’s most loved whiskeys, is thrilled to announce the launch of METHOD AND MADNESS Garryana Oak Edition from its experimental Micro Distillery in Midleton, Co. Cork Ireland. A world first in Irish whiskey, this new release is a traditional single pot still whiskey finished in Garryana Oak casks that pushes the boundaries of Irish whiskey.
Created in 2017, the METHOD AND MADNESS brand is dedicated to exploring new mash bills, distillation techniques, and wood finishes in the world of Irish whiskey. The Micro Distillery serves as a blank copper canvas of innovation and experimentation at Midleton where whiskey masters and apprentices come together to develop curious and intriguing liquids to showcase to the world.
METHOD AND MADNESS Garryana Oak is exceptional in its use of Oregon white oak, which is rare and distinctive for its tough and dense wood properties. Masterfully created by the talented Micro Distillery team and Wood Innovation specialists at Midleton Distillery, the whiskey was triple distilled at the Micro Distillery from a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley, and matured in ex-Bourbon American oak casks, before being finished in casks made from virgin Garryana oak from the rainy Pacific Northwest for between four and 12 months.
The Garryana oak brings a unique richness, complexity, and spiciness to the whiskey and is considered to have an elevated phenolic aroma profile and higher tannins, which contribute to a distinctive array of flavours. This exquisite expression offers aromas of smoked applewood, treacle, and golden raisins, with notes of black pepper, coffee cake, clove spice and malted barley.
Crafted using Quercus Garryana, a species of white oak native to the Pacific Northwest, this limited-edition embodies the distinct character of the region’s environment. Garryana Oak is the only native oak in Washington and British Columbia, and the principal native oak of Oregon. This particular species of white oak is known for its tough, durable wood, and its use in barrel-making is a relatively new development.

Mit ihrem Millstone Whisky sind sie mittlerweile in vielen Genießer-Regalen vertreten. Wir konnten sie gemeinsam mit Michel Reick (er hat als unabhängiger Abfüller Whisky Druid auch Millstone im Programm) auf Einladung von Kirsch Import Anfang Mai besuchen.
Die Brennerei an der (extrem seltsam verlaufenden, weil durch Enklaven bestimmten) Grenze zwischen Holland und Belgien, im Ort Baarle-Nassau gelegen, gefällt durch sowohl ungetorfte als auch getorfte Whiskys, die mittlerweile zum Teil bereits über 20 Jahre lagern durften und durch Tiefgang und Aromenvielfalt überzuegen. Das liegt zum Teil an den hervorragenden Sherryfässern, in denen viele von ihnen reifen können.
Master Mind hinter der Brennerei ist Patrick Zuidam, der die 1975 gegründete Destillerie, die mit Genever und anderen Bränden begann, von seinem Vater übernahm. Er hat den Job des Destillers von der Pike auf gelernt, war schon als Kind zusammen mit seinem Bruder in der Brennerei tätig.

Samtige Single-Cask-Premiere: Oxford Rye aus 30 Jahre altem Port Pipe
1906 war der Anfang vom Ende für Urgetreide. Bis zur Einführung des ersten gezüchteten Hybridweizens war die Getreidelandschaft äußerst vielfältig. Unsere Vorfahren bauten genetisch komplexe Sorten an. The Oxford Artisan Distillery geht zurück zu diesen Wurzeln.
Größtenteils rund um die Universitätsstadt Oxford werden exklusiv für die 2017 gegründete Brennerei überlieferte Sorten von Roggen, Weizen und Gerste in regenerativer Landwirtschaft angebaut. Nach Methoden, die zuletzt um 1800 geläufig waren. Aufwand, der sich lohnt: Was in die edlen Flaschen fließt, besitzt Malz-, Karamell- und Gebäcktöne sowie ein seidenweiches Mundgefühl.
Mit ihrem ersten Single Cask zeigt sich The Oxford Artisan Distillery nun von einer neuen Seite. The Tawny Pipe wurde aus der typischen Mashbill alter Getreidesorten (70% Roggen, 20% Weizen, 10% Gerste) gebrannt und reifteinitial in Virgin American Oak Casks.
Dann füllte man den Whisky in das Tawny Port Pipe #114 um – ein Fass mit 30-jähriger Historie in der Portweinherstellung.
2 Jahre und 9 Monate später hat es dem Oxford Rye einen duftigen, samtigen Charakter verliehen, der süße und herzhafte Noten vereint.
Nur 587 Flaschen gibt es insgesamt.

Tasting Notes:
Nase: Fruchtiger Charakter aus erfrischender Grapefruit, Himbeere und Pflaumen, süße Noten von Bananen-Split, Getreide, Muscovado-Zucker und Vanille mit einem Hauch von Fenchel, Haselnuss und Zimt.
Gaumen: Cremige Creme-Brûlée-Textur mit Rosinen, Pflaumen und Gewürzen.
Nachklang: Schwarze und rosa Pfefferkörner spielen mit Minze und Mango-Chutney.
Whiskyproduktion ist offensichtlich auch unter den oder vielleicht auch wegen der momentanen Umstände ein erfolgsversprechendes Geschäft, in das zu investieren es sich lohnt. Nach diesem Motto nimmt das philippinische Unternehmen Emperador (ihm gehört Whyte & Mackay, und denen gehören die Malt Distillieries Dalmore, Fettercairn, Jura und Tamnavulin sowie die Invergordon Distillery, die Grain Whisky produziert) 125 Millionen Dollar in die Hand, um diese für erhöhte Produktion auszubauen. Und auch für die Produktion des unter dem eigenen Namen produzierten Brandys ist Geld vorgesehen.
Den Hauptteil des Investments, nämlich 107 Millionen Dollar, bekommen aber die Whiskybrennereien, deren Umsatz laut Emperador in den Jahren 2020 bis 2022 um 18% gestiegen ist. Wir wissen zum Beispiel, dass bereits Anfang des Sommers ein Austausch des Mash Tuns bei Fettercairn, der noch aus viktorianischer Zeit stammt, vorgesehen ist – aber dabei wird es natürlich nicht bleiben.
Emperador, selbst übrigens ein Arm des Konzenrs Alliance Global Group, der in Realitäten, Essen und Getränke sowie in touristische Attraktionen und Gaming investiert, hat im Vorjahr sehr gut verdient – der Gewinn stiegt um 12%, die Verkäufe im ersten Drittel 2023 um 26%.

Eine neue Dream Cask Edition von Redbreast ist gestern vorgestellt worden: Der Redbreast Dream Cask sixth edition – Port to Port 27yo ist die sechste jährliche Veröffentlichung der Serie und diesmal geht es bei ihm um Port Finishing. Mit 580 Euro pro Flasche ist er im Bereich ähnlicher Veröffentlichungen, allerdings fassen die mit 56,3% vol. abgefüllten Flaschen nur 500ml Whiskey, was den Preis der 870 Flaschen dann doch noch einmal relativiert. Und: Er ist wie immer nur für die Mitglieder des Birdhouse erhältlich – über ein Verlosungssystem, das am 22. Mai starten wird.

A limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey with Ruby Port, Bourbon and Tawny Port influence is revealed as the sixth iteration in the Redbreast Dream Cask Series
Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, is excited to announce the release of its highly anticipated sixth edition in the Dream Cask series, Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition.
Designed and crafted by Master Blender, Billy Leighton, this limited-edition 27-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey is a true masterpiece, bringing an innovative twist to the Redbreast Dream Cask family. Enlisting the support of Blender, Dave McCabe, the pair knew that only the most exceptional aged whiskeys would be capable of creating the perfect sixth expression in the series to preserve the coveted Redbreast Dream Cask legacy and reward loyal Redbreast advocates.
To create this exquisite whiskey, Leighton and McCabe carefully selected two casks from the Midleton inventory. After starting their life separately in bourbon and ruby port casks and ageing for 27 and 28 years respectively, the two exceptional whiskeys were then married together for a final three-month maturation period in two tawny port casks, creating an extraordinary liquid, worthy of carrying the Redbreast Dream Cask name.
Leighton notes:
“The two single pot still whiskeys which had been maturing separately were already an outstanding pairing, but the marrying period in the tawny port casks elevated the expression to new heights. The tawny port influence adds notes of baked goods, toasted nuts, and sweet almond, overall making for a complex, full bodied final liquid.”
This unique new release is the first in the series where none of the fortified wine cask influence is derived from a sherry cask. However, the Redbreast DNA still shines through with a strong bourbon influence and the style of ruby port used. Both are then further enhanced by the elegant contribution of the tawny port casks.
Dave McCabe added:
“The traditional Redbreast style is mostly associated with the influence of sherry. Saying that, we took inspiration from the popularity of the port cask inclusion in Redbreast 27 Year Old, and decided to push the boundary a little bit further. By using two types of port casks for this year’s Dream Cask, we created a whiskey with a medium spice intensity along with distinctive wine driven characteristics.
We felt a three month finish in the tawny port casks was the optimal time needed, adding new layers of complexity to the whiskey. At the same time, we were conscious of preserving the individual characteristics that these two liquids had gained from their original maturation journeys.”
In March 2023, after an extraordinary journey, the final liquid was bottled, marking the sixth iteration of the series. Standing as a testament to Leighton and McCabe’s dedicated craftsmanship and vast knowledge, Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition is a captivating, full-bodied Irish whiskey, that provides a complete sensory experience with a complex nose, taste, and finish that any whiskey lover would be thrilled to experience. Available through an online ballot hosted on Redbreast’s online members’ club The Birdhouse opening on May 22nd at a RRP of €580. A ballot will also be held at Whiskey Live Dublin, where one person per session will have the opportunity to purchase a bottle of Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition, along with an overnight stay in Castlemartyr Resort for two, transfers to and from Midleton Distillery and a behind the scenes experience at Midleton Distillery with the Redbreast blenders.
Bottled at 56.3% ABV, the casks yielded 870 of the 500ml bottles, each presented in a keepsake book, made from recyclable cardboard, detailing the latest installment in the Dream Cask journey.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose An intense burst of flavour with cassis, stone fruits, and citrus peel to the fore while notes of dried figs and dates along with sweet black cherry slowly tip toe into the medley of flavours. The heavy and medium pot still whiskeys add vibrant and robust aromas of white pepper and clove spice while herbal notes of lemon verbena and thyme weave amongst the nutty praline and baked confectionery that the port seasoning brings to this exquisite whiskey.
Taste Luscious and textured with medium spice intensity and a balanced oak tannin contribution. Toasted almonds and cacao nibs with a mild earthy character are complemented by the dried fruits and red berry compote. The pot still spices build adding a mild heat of chilli flakes while the influences drawn from the ruby and tawny port continue to provide an abundance of flavour, working in tandem with the toasted European oak.
Finish Rich and lasting, with the pot still spices the first to slowly fade allowing the wine seasoned oak and fruits to have the final say.
Es ist der zweite New Make in der Reihe von jährlichen Veröffentlichungen zum World Whisky Day (der findet übermorgen statt), nach dem Holyrood Sake inspired New Make (mehr zu ihm können Sie hier finden): Der Holyrood New Make Mexico wurde unter Verwendung einer Hefesorte, die für mexikanische Lager-Biere genutzt wird, gebrannt. “Experimenting and playing with flavours is a fundamental part of what we do at Holyrood Distillery. Each of our new make spirits showcase different ingredients not commonly seen in modern distilling, including heritage barleys, speciality malts, and a diverse range of yeast strains.
For tasting notes, our latest World Whisky Day new make spirit has notes of sweet, sticky toffee and hints of hazelnut on the nose, followed by a burst of flavours that evoke dried fruit and sweet toffee cake.
This is followed by a long finish that coats the mouth and brings to mind demerara sugar and a sharp bitter note reminiscent of mezcal. All of this is wrapped in a layer of warming spice and a texture that is light and creamy.”
Der mit 60% vol. Alkoholstärke abgefüllte Holyrood New Make Mexico wird in der Destillerie für 35 Pfund erhältlich sein – ein interessantes Mitbringsel bei einem Besuch dort.
Leider kann Serge Valentin in diesem Jahr das Fèis Ìle auf Islay nicht besuchen, aber als kleinen Ersatz hat er sich vorgenommen, über die nächsten Tage Whiskys von allen Brennereien der Insel zu verkosten.

Um Missverständnissen gleich vorzubeugen: Bei den acht Dekaden handelt es sich nicht um das Alter des Whiskys, sondern um jenes des amerikanischen Künstlers James Turrell, der eine Kollaboration mit Glenturret und Lalique für dieses Bottling eingegangen ist.
Der Glenturret Eight Decades ist nämlich deutlich jünger – er besteht aus acht Fässern, die zwischen den Jahren 1987 und 1998 befüllt wurden und seitdem in der Brennerei reifen durften – das offizielle Alter des Whiskys wäre also höchstens 25 Jahre, da der jüngste Whisky in der Flasche angegeben werden müsste.
Der Glenturret Eight Decades, abgefüllt mit 41,5% vol., ist die dritte Zusammenarbeit von James Turrell mit Lalique; zuvor hat er für das Unternehmen bereits Parfümflacons und Lichtpanele kreiert. Von ihm wird es nur 80 Decanter geben, und die Preise orientieren sich sicher nicht am Wert des Whiskys, sondern des Kunstwerks in Kleinauflage und der dafür nötigen handwerklichen Rafinesse, die laut Lalique selbst ihre Glasmeister an die Grenzen brachte. Ein Decanter kostet 80.000 Pfund, und wer davon nicht abgeschreckt wird, der kann ab sofort unter privateclient@theglenturret.com oder in den Lalique Boutiquen in der Conduit Street oder in der Burlington Arcade in London vorbestellen.
Was uns natürlich auch interessiert: wie der Whisky schmeckt. Der Glenturret Eight Decades soll in der Nase Noten von dunklen Trockenfrüchten, Schokoladenorange, Ingwerkuchen, roten Beeren, frischem Apfel und sanfter Eiche bieten. Am Gaumen folgen dann Anklänge von sanfter Holzwürze, reichhaltigem Obstkuchen, Melassesirup, Honigwabe und Eiche.
Dieser Gedanke, dass es sich bei dem Decanter für den Glenturret Eight Decades eher um ein Kunstwerk als um eine simple schön gestaltete Whiskyflasche handelt, findet sich auch im Statement von John Laurie, dem Managing Director von Glenturret:
It is a proud moment for us to be working with James Turrell – a lot of hard work and emotions have gone into designing and creating this decanter. The Eight Decades decanter encapsulates The Glenturret’s very essence: an understated aesthetic, crafted by many talented hands who are all custodians of the skills required to create such a beautiful decanter and liquid. The design of Eight Decades is a departure from more traditional whisky bottles and a homage to the artist as it commemorates his eightieth birthday – we feel it is a piece of art just as much as it is a whisky decanter holding a delicious liquid.
