30-Year-Old Irish Single Malt Becomes the Most Expensive Bottle of Whiskey (or Whisky) Ever Sold

A Bottle of The Emerald Isle, from The Craft Irish Whiskey Co., has sold for $2.8m – $100k more than a bottle of The Macallan 1926 fetched at auction last autumn

LONDON, Jan. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. has seen a record-breaking start to 2024, selling a bottle of whiskey to American collector Mike Daley, for $2.8m. This world-first sale makes The Emerald Isle, already the rarest triple-distilled single malt in existence, the most expensive bottle of whiskey, or whisky, ever sold.

Historically, the most sought-after bottles of the spirit have been Scotch whiskies. Last November, a bottle of The Macallan 1926 fetched $2.7m at auction, briefly becoming the world’s most expensive bottle, a title that has now been usurped by The Emerald Isle, representing a shift in luxury collectors‘ interests, many of whom feel the Scotch market has become too crowded.

Mike Daley said:

„Irish is the future of whiskey. I’m excited to be part of it, as a collector, but most importantly as a drinker.“

Daley is one of the US‘ most prolific collectors of the spirit, with a vast collection consisting of several thousand bottles of Irish, American, and Scotch whiskeys/whiskies. His latest record-breaking purchase is one of only seven sets in existence; a liquid which three decades of maturation in a variety of casks, have imbued with an unrivalled intensity of flavour. The Emerald Isle’s stunning walnut case includes a single decanter, alongside a bespoke Fabergé egg — containing an actual emerald gem — a custom timepiece, and a pair of Cohiba cigars.

Daley also said:

„The rebirth of Irish whiskey is relatively new, so I feel like I’m getting in on the ground floor. Luxury scotch, to me, is already a crowded type of market. But we’re only just starting to see luxury Irish make a name for itself. I guarantee you that in the years to come, it will get to where scotch is today.“

Daley’s predictions have proved accurate in the past, he made his fortune investing heavily in hyaluronic acid long before the pharmaceutical industry caught up. His thoughts about Irish whiskey’s increasing value are supported by data from the Distilled Spirits Council, showing that some super premium spirits within the category have soared by nearly 2,800% in price in the past two decades.

While there are some critics who claim that that The Emerald Isle’s value is bolstered by the luxury items included within the box, this criticism falls flat when considered alongside the fact that The Macallan 1926 that claimed the most expensive title last November, was one of only 12 bottles covered with a label designed by Italian painter Valerio Adami, adding considerable value to its auction price.

Jay Bradley, founder and CEO of The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. said:

„A bottle of The Emerald Isle becoming the most expensive whiskey or whisky ever sold is a monumental achievement for my business, and an incredibly proud moment for me. I started The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. with the goal of making Irish whiskey the most coveted luxury spirit and restoring Ireland’s reputation for crafting the finest whiskeys in the world, this brings us several steps closer to achieving that, and we’re only six years into the journey. There’s a lot more to come from us, and I’m excited for our customers and competitors to see what we have in store.“

ABOUT THE CRAFT IRISH WHISKEY CO.:

The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. is on a mission to restore Ireland’s reputation for crafting the finest whiskeys in the world, elevating its potential as a luxury product. Formed in 2018 by Irish entrepreneur Jay Bradley, The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. was born from a desire to return premium Irish whiskey to the heights it once enjoyed. To achieve such a goal has taken a complete reimagining of the craft; honouring centuries of tradition but questioning convention and adding scientific understanding to reinvent the maturation of the whiskey. No expense is spared, no corners are cut.

In 2021, The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. became the most highly awarded new company of the year, amassing a total of 12 awards across both Taste and Design for four of its ultra-rare whiskey releases. In 2022, the company continued this award-winning streak, with 22 awards across Taste and Design, including the world’s Best Irish Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards for The Devil’s Keep, and a perfect score to achieve Platinum at the A’Design Awards for The Emerald Isle. The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. was also the exclusive Michelin Plaque Distribution Partner for The Michelin Guide Star Revelation Great Britain and Ireland 2022.

In 2023, the business has continued to go from strength to strength, with a total of 44 awards won to date, including Gold and Silver at the IWSC Taste Awards, Gold, Silver, and Bronze at the World Whiskey Awards, and a prestigious Master Medal for The Donn at The Drinks Business Autumn Bling Tasting.

Partnerships evolved with both The Michelin Guide Star Revelation Great Britain and Ireland 2023, at which The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. and Michelin shone a spotlight on truly remarkable mixology, with the 2023 Exceptional Cocktail Award; and World’s 50 Best Restaurants, partnering with the prestigious awards as its Official Whiskey of the World Partner.

TALISKER PARTNERS WITH THREE CHIMNEYS FOR IMMERSIVE

POP-UP DINING EXPERIENCE

ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND, 11 January 2024: This Spring, the oldest distillery on Skye, Talisker and five-star rated restaurant, The Three Chimneys, will come together for the first time to launch ‘The Three Chimneys at Talisker’, a unique Pop-Up dining experience.

A concept from the revered restaurant’s Head Chef, Scott Davies and general manager, Krzysztof Dudkowski, ‘The Three Chimneys at Talisker’ is hosted at the distillery’s newly designed waterfront space on the shores of Loch Harport. The experience invites guests to fully immerse themselves in the rugged coastal landscape of Skye, through locally sourced food and drink and a shared passion and respect for local produce and craftspeople.

Head Chef Scott Davies has woven the characteristics and processes of whisky distilling and maturation into local ingredients for a unique tasting menu ‘The Journey’, inspired by Uisge Beatha (the Scottish Gaelic term for ‘Water of Life’), offered at the beautiful Loch side location. Guests can also savour lighter, seasonally influenced fare that showcases the abundant richness of Skye’s larder, with an artisanal Seafood bar.

Leigh Aitken, Talisker Brand Home Manager said:

“We’re thrilled to welcome one of Scotland’s most famous restaurants, The Three Chimneys, to Talisker’s Pop-Up space, giving our guests an unforgettable culinary experience and showcasing local ingredients. Working together with The Three Chimneys means we can excite our visitors with something new and ensure that Skye remains a cherished haven for enthusiasts of fine food and whisky.”

Scott Davies, Head Chef at The Three Chimneys added:

“We’re super excited about our new partnership with Talisker. I didn’t appreciate whisky until I visited the Isle of Skye many years ago, I was fortunate to have a private tour at the distillery and had the opportunity to sample the 35 Year Old expression. Since that day I fell in love with the complexity coming from humble beginnings and capturing history in a glass.

This partnership has allowed me to take inspiration from the creative process and ingredients in whisky distilling and maturation that is mirrored in the dishes. Our ethos at The Three Chimneys at Talisker is the best of Skye, Land, & Sea and I feel the ethos of both the Three Chimneys and Talisker are routed in local produce and the communities that make the Isle of Skye.”

This new adventure follows the opening of the distillery’s new visitor experience, which was completely transformed in 2022, as part of Diageo’s £185 million investment in Scotch whisky tourism in Scotland. Boasting new interactive experiences and revamped distillery tours, the space demonstrates how Talisker is deeply intertwined with the island’s history and culture. As Skye’s oldest distillery, the Talisker Distillery, with its rugged coastal character, epitomises the spirit of Skye. The rugged landscapes and wild seas shape the whisky and its craft.

The Three Chimneys Restaurant and The House Over-By have a rich history stemming from humble beginnings which date back to 1968. The restaurant has six guest rooms and is nestled on the shores of Loch Dunvegan with the dramatic backdrop of the Duirinish peninsula of Skye. The landscapes and seascapes of Skye encapsulate the seasons on this mystical isle, which is brimming with historic castles, lighthouses, beaches, fishing ports and distilleries.

The five-star AA restaurant also has retained three AA Rosettes for over 2 decades and is included in the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2023 and the Good Food Guide.

We’re sad to announce our plans to close the café facilities at Ardnahoe Distillery. The staff have given it their all, but like many small, independent family businesses, we’re feeling the effects of the current economic climate that is hitting the hospitality sector particularly hard. Our immediate priority is to support our staff as we undergo a consultation period with them on the future for their roles. The rest of the visitor centre, with its public tours and gift shop, would be unaffected by the café’s closure.

We’re sad to announce our plans to close the café facilities at Ardnahoe Distillery.  While everyone involved has worked hard to create a much appreciated and well-reviewed offering, the café has not been immune to the well-publicised challenges facing the hospitality sector as a whole.  As a family-owned business, we are hugely disappointed for our staff and are doing everything we can to lend our support as we undergo a consultation period with them on the future of their roles.

Hunter Laing & Company Limited

The rest of our visitor centre facilities would continue to operate as normal, with public tours and the gift shop welcoming whisky fans keen to see our distillery first-hand.

TTB-Neuheit: Gordon & MacPhail Mr George Legacy 1958 from Glen Grant Distillery

Kingsbarns Distillery: „pay-what-you-like“-Touren kehren zurück

“This has been an exceptionally challenging year financially for many people and with the continuing cost-of-living pressures, we decided to expand the initiative to ensure that our award winnings tours are accessible to all, whether they’re spirits enthusiasts, or locals and visitors looking to learn more about the distilling process.”

Nine River Distillers starts second round of crowdfunding

Nine Rivers Distillery, the crowd-funded passion of more than 260 whisky lovers, is fast approaching the completion of its first phase of construction and aims to produce spirit before the middle of 2024.

This initial phase will put Nine Rivers Distillery live with 3 stills from Forsyths in Scotland and 1.31 million LPA of production capacity, about 30% more than the Pernod Ricard project in Sichuan province.  However, the project has been designed from the start to eventually reach an impressive 7.5 million LPA of production capacity, achievable by simply adding more stills to a massive 1000 square meter, open plan still room within their 1500 square meter still house.

At 7.5 million LPA, Nine Rivers Distillery will be the biggest single malt whisky distillery in China, by a long mile.  Currently, the biggest single malt whisky distillery has about 3 million LPA of capacity for single malt whisky.  7.5 million LPA isn’t just going to be the biggest in China, it will rank highly on a global scale with very few single malt whisky distilleries reaching these numbers – let alone a startup.

The long-term ambition is to expand the production at the main production site.  Concurrently, start constructing their own on-site cooperage (with a capacity to produce 100,000 barrels a year).  Then expand across China with a number of micro-distilleries in key locations to capitalize on the growing interest in whisky across China and of course whisky tourism, events and on-site retail.

What makes Nine Rivers Distillery so unique is the fact that it is led, managed, and funded by whisky enthusiasts from all over the world.  Not only do investors in this project own equity but they are involved in a significant amount of the decision-making and the support of the project.

The ambition is to have at least 1000 whisky lovers involved in the project, contributing ideas, opinions, experience, and perspectives as whisky enthusiasts, ensuring that Nine Rivers Distillery can be a producer that whisky lovers can really believe in and craft products that whisky lovers are enthusiastic to buy and consume.

This is where you, as a whisky lover, can be a part of something that’s important to you.  Helping to create and support a whisky producer that really does intend to make #whiskyforthepeople

Minimum investments are €5000.  We already have a number of German investors involved.  Feel free to reach out to us for further information.

Save the Date: MÜNCHEN SPIRITS vom 2. bis 4. Februar 2024

“We are delighted to be welcoming Phillip to the Gordon & MacPhail team and believe he is the right person to lead the business, thanks in part to his excellent leadership qualities, and experience working with global brands, UK retail distribution and the wider spirits industry. This is an exciting time for the company, as we look forward to executing our ambitious plans to continue building our brands internationally, developing our workforce and embarking on a significant capital investment phase to prepare the business for future growth while remaining true to our values.”

Neil Urquhart, Chairman G&M

The company has grown significantly, particularly over the last few years, and I look forward to working with my colleagues, to continue building a successful family business committed to inspiring enthusiasts around the world to discover, appreciate and enjoy the finest single malt whiskies and highest quality spirits
