Nach dem Year of the Tiger (wir berichteten hier) kommt nun von Glenmorangie unter Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden der Glenmorangie Year of the Rabbit 23yo (der allerdings erst 2023 auf den Markt kommen wird, falls man sich am chinesischen Kalender orientiert, da beginnt das Jahr des Wasser-Hasen am 22. Januar 2023).
Der mit 46% abgefüllte Whisky wurde im Jahr 1999 in die Bourbon-Fässer und PX-Fässer gefüllt, ebenfalls ein Hase-Jahr. Er soll Noten von Pfirsich und blumige Aromen vereinen und insgesamt sehr sanft sein – wie der Hase.
Die am Etikett zu findende Anzahl der Flaschen (888) könnte man auch als Platzhalter definieren – sie entspricht exakt der Anzahl aus dem Vorjahr.

1,2 Millionen Dollar hat man sich von der Auktion bei Sotheby’s in New York am vergangenen Wochenende als Erlös erwartet (unseren Bericht dazu finden Sie hier), geworden sind es dann 1,63 Millionen Dollar, die man für die Bourbons und Ryes erlöste. Spitzenreiter war dabei der Lenell’s Red Hook Rye 24 Year Old Barrell #4, der seinen Schätzwert auf über 43.000 Dollar verdoppelte. Aber auch andere Whiskeys konnten zu sehr viel Geld an die Kunden verkauft werden, wie die nachfolgende Presseaussendung beschreibt:

Sotheby’s Achieves the Most Valuable Auction of American Whiskey – Sale of Bourbon & Rye Totals $1.6 Million
This weekend at Sotheby’s in New York, a sale of Bourbon & Rye Whiskey achieved $1.63 million – becoming the most valuable auction of American whiskey ever staged and doubling the pre-sale estimate.
The top lot was a bottle of Lenell’s Red Hook Rye 24 Year Old Barrell #4, which doubled its pre-sale high estimate, selling for $43,750 (lot 543). The price achieved matched the amount paid for a bottle in Sotheby’s sale of The Thoroughbred Collection in April 2021 – the company’s first American Whiskey auction – making this the most valuable bottle of Rye Whiskey ever sold at auction. In total, across all four of LeNell’s single barrel releases, only 852 bottles exist, making it not only one of the most valuable American Whiskeys ever produced, but also one of the rarest.
Sharing the top spot was a double vertical of Pappy Van Winkle from the 2020 and 2021 releases, comprising 12 bottles, which also realised $43,750 (lot 535). Other notable lots includes a bottle of Michter’s Single Barrel Bourbon 20 Year Old sold for $27,500, almost seven times its pre-sale low estimate (lot 482), and a case of six bottles of Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Bourbon 10 Year Old, which soared to $17,500, fifteen times its pre-sale low estimate (lot 606).
The sale was a resounding success, with close to 100% of the lots sold, and 75% of those lots achieving prices above their high estimates. With demand for American whiskeys invariably domestic and spread across the United States, 93% of the lots were acquired by collectors based in North America. Almost 60% of the buyers were new to Sotheby’s, and overall, 77% of the buyers were aged in their 40s or younger, and 42% were aged in their 30s or younger.
Featuring two of the most significant collections to come to the market in a single sale, the auction was led by the American Muscle Collection (lots 1 – 534), which takes its name not only from its unparalleled range of rich and robust US Bourbons and Rye Whiskeys, but also from the collector who built this significant catalogue of bottles. Rich “RJ” Gottlieb is the owner of one of the most legendary Chevrolets in existence, the 1969 “Big Red” Camaro, referred to by many as “the baddest muscle car ever”.
The second significant collection was The Three Continents Collection Part III (lots 586 – 750). These whiskeys were part of a 5,000 bottle-strong collection of Scotch and Japanese whisky as well as Bourbon and Rye from the USA that has been allocated across five Sotheby’s auctions in 2021 and 2022. This weekend’s sale exclusively contained American whiskeys from this collection.

FESTIVAL SET TO REIGNITE SPEYSIDE’S SPIRIT IN 2022
Tickets for this year’s Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, one of the world’s most anticipated whisky celebrations, are now available to buy.
Over five hundred events within the Festival, which runs from 27 April to 2 May, have been announced. These will allow ticket holders exclusive access to world famous distilleries, the chance to meet the craftspeople behind the liquid and immerse themselves in the heart of malt whisky country.
George McNeil, chairman of The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, said:
“We have an impressive range of events on offer, with some stellar new additions to the 2022 programme including an eclectic amalgamation of Star Wars and whisky tasting in memory of Brett Ferencz known to many as the Scotch Trooper, with 25% of ticket sales going towards cancer research.
“The last few years have been difficult for everyone and as we begin to return to normality I know that the many partners and people who help to bring the Festival to life are gearing up to welcome people from all over the globe to Speyside.

Programme highlights include History of the Highball with whisky legend Sarah Burgess, an evening not to be missed with Glen Moray’s Iain Allan at Elgin Cathedral and one of a kind experiences at a number of distilleries not usually open to the public including Dufftown, Tamdhu and Tamnavulin distillery tours and tastings.

This afternoon experience includes pick up/drop off from your local hotel/residence in air conditioned classic ‚go anywhere‘ Land Rover Safari vehicles. Teeling Whiskey Crowned World’s Best For The Second Time
We are extremely proud to announce that our Dublin distilled Single Pot Still has claimed the prestigious title of the “World’s Best Single Pot Still” at the 2022 World Whiskies Awards. This success follows on from achieving the pinnacle of “World’s Best Single Malt” at these awards in 2019.
By winning, this second “World’s Best” title we have again made history as the first whiskey to be honoured across two different categories. The awards were held at the exclusive 2022 World Whiskies Awards ceremony held in the Honourable Artillery Company in London on Thursday 24th March 2022.
Speaking on the award win, Jack Teeling, Founder and Managing Director of Teeling Whiskey said;
“Since reviving our old family trademark of Teeling Whiskey back in 2012, we have endeavoured to make sure every bottle of Irish whiskey is of the highest quality. To be honoured once as the World Best Single Malt back in 2019 felt like a pinnacle of all our efforts. However, being honoured as the World’s Best for the second time, this time for our Dublin distilled Single Pot Still against well-established competitors who have dominated the Single Pot Still category, has proven our new distillery is world class. We are now right back at the top table of global whiskey and we look forward to continuing to lead this new golden era for Irish whiskey.”
The Teeling Whiskey Wonders of Wood Single Pot Still is a new limited edition series of unique bottlings of Dublin distilled Single Pot Still given maturation in unique wood barrels. The first edition of our WOW bottlings, which was honoured as the World’s Best, consists of Single Pot Still crafted from a recipe of 50% malted barley and 50% un-malted barley, which has been triple distilled in the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin and then fully matured in virgin Chinkapin American White Oak barrels. The First Edition of this new WOW series is limited to 9,000 70cl bottles being sold in Ireland and around the world and 7,000 bottles exclusively for the US.
To ensure the celebrations went long into the night, we were also honoured with another “World’s Best” accolade. Rob Caldwell, Teeling Whiskey’s Global Brand Ambassador, was chosen as the “World’s Best Brand Ambassador” for all his efforts in educating and representing Teeling and Irish Whiskey around the world over the last four years.

Mit VI Casks for King James kündigt man nun eine Abfüllungsserie mit eigenproduziertem Whisky an, die allerdings erst ab 2027 in zweijährigen Abständen erhältlich sein wird. Dazu wird man eigenen Whisky ab diesem Jahr in sechs Fässer legen: Bourbon, Sherry, Port, Rum, Wein und Madeira und dann 300 Flaschen pro Fass abfüllen. Die Sechsersets kosten 350 Pfund und können bei der Destillerie vorbestellt werden.
DISTILLERY PUTTING WHISKY BACK ON THE MAP IN STIRLING
Whisky production returns to the city of Stirling, in the heart of Scotland, as Stirling Distillery announces the launch of their limited edition VI Casks for King James single malt whisky. The six bottle set will comprise one bottle from six different flavoured casks – bourbon, sherry, port, rum, wine and madeira – and marks the distillery’s move into new-make whisky production.
Stirling Distillery is well known for celebrating the rich history and folklore of the famous Scottish city through their product range. Because there is strong evidence that King James VI stabled his horses on the land the distillery is built on, the VI Casks for King James was created.
Co-owner of the distillery Cameron McCann spoke of wanting to offer something unique for whisky enthusiasts:
“We are delighted to be launching this unique VI Casks for King James bottling. If your preference is for rare bottles rather than investing in casks, then the limited edition VI Casks for King James is the perfect choice. I’m very conscious of cost and want the whisky to be affordable to enthusiasts like myself”.
With his passion for and knowledge of whisky, Cameron and wife June McCann were keen to evolve the distillery from gin to also being a whisky producer. Whisky hasn’t been produced in Stirling since 1852 when the original Stirling Distillery closed its doors.
The VI Casks of King James whisky will be created in the first legal distillery to sit on the castle rock, in the shadow of Stirling Castle. The distillery sits on the border of the highlands, so despite being a lowland distillery (a distillery situated south of a line running from the Clyde estuary to the River Tay), the whisky could be classified as lowland or highland.
June McCann spoke of the distillery’s whisky process;
“For us, the essential components for creating a truly special whisky are simple; from using only the best water, yeast and malted barley to the care that goes into hand selecting the best quality casks to develop the rich flavours. Whisky production is a delicate process that takes time, love and passion and we’re excited to start our whisky journey”.
The better the wood, the better the flavour. It’s that simple. As a small craft distillery, Stirling is very conscious of the whisky barrels they use and have taken the time to choose their wood carefully. The distillery have selected wood from locations all over the world to ensure the best flavour experience for their customers. The wonderful rich flavours of the barrels will infuse the new make spirit. The McCanns have also put a key focus on where the whisky will be kept whilst it matures. The VI Casks for King James will be laid down in a traditional dunnage in sight of Stirling Castle to ensure minimal temperature variation between seasons.
The casks will be released bi-annually from 2027. There will only be 300 bottles from a single cask and each set will cost £350. On purchasing a set, customers will get first refusal on any Stirling Distillery new-make whisky, receive a branded polo shirt, exclusive pin badge and will become a part of Stirling’s rich whisky history.

Und nun ist es also tatsächlich soweit: Die traditionsreiche und wiederbelebte Lowland-Brennerei Bladnoch, Im Besitz de australischen Millionärs David Prior, stellt den Bladnoch Alinta als neuestes Mitglied ihrer Abfüllungsfamilie vor.
Der Bladnoch Alinta ist der erste getorfte Whisky aus der Brennerei seit der Übernahme im Jahr 2015, und wer aus den früheren Zeiten (als die Brennerei Diageo und danach Raymond Armstrong gehörte) torfige Bladnochs kennt, der weiß, dass dies außergewöhnliche Whiskys waren. Alinta ist ein Wort aus der Sprache der australischen Ureinwohner und bedeuten „Feuer“ und „Flammen“, ist also ein passender Name für einen rauchigen Whisky, der aus PX- und Bourbonfässern stammt.
Viel getorften Whisky produziert man bei Bladnoch nicht, also wird diese Abfüllung recht limitiert sein. Zunächst gibt es den Bladnoch Alinta (47% vol.) im Besucherzentrum und auf der Webseite der Brennerei (79,95 Pfund), aber schon in der kommenden Woche soll er auch den Fachhandel in Deutschland erreichen.
Kein Alphatier unter den schottischen Brennereien, und daher meist etwas unter dem Radar laufend ist Glen Spey. Bei unabhängigen Abfüllern ist sie manchmal zu finden, offizielle Bottlings gibt es, abgesehen von den Flora & Fauna-Ausgaben, kaum welche, auf jeden Fall keine Core-Range immer wieder aufgelegter Abfüllungen. Sie produziert also im ganz überwiegenden Teil für die Blends von Diageo.
Zwei Abfüllungen aus Glen Spey verkostet Serge Valentin heute, und beide können ein recht gutes Ergebnis einfahren – jeweils 84 Punkte. Die Abfüllung von Cooper’s Choice ist zusätzlich interessant, weil sie ein Finish in Calvados-Fässern erfahren hat.

We are delighted to announce our new Speyside Distillery’s Artist Trio Spring 2022
A trio of limited edition single malts has been launched by Speyside distillery to celebrate the arrival of spring, each featuring specifically commissioned artwork from artist in residence Joanna McDonough. Joanna is pictured here with her husband and CEO John Harvey McDonough, Distillery Manager Allan Findlay and MD Patricia Dillon at the launch night in Speyside Distillery’s ‚The Snug‘ in Aviemore on Wednesday 23rd March 2022 where they were joined by local customers, suppliers and SPEY friends to celebrate.
Artist Joanna McDonough said:
“I was delighted to be asked to develop paintings for Speyside’s Artist Trio to complement the Tenne, Trutina and Fumare SPEY single malt whiskies.
“While preparing to start work, I realised that artists, musicians and distillers are all working towards a very similar – if not identical – goal in their art and craft.“
“My goal in my work is to express myself, my feelings and my emotions – and create art which, in turn, then causes an emotional reaction. Musicians, too, create an emotional reaction with their work.
“Similarly, distillers are masters at crafting whisky that creates an emotional reaction in the taster – taking the drinker on a journey of sight, smell and taste. We are all artists in our own way.”
Speyside Distillers chief executive John Harvey McDonough said:
“I am very proud to introduce the limited edition Speyside’s Artist Trio to our SPEY Collection. My wife Joanna has previously created stunning labels for our SPEY single malts and Byron’s Gin, but these new artworks truly encapsulate the joy of whisky.

SPEY TRUTINA ‚MELODY‘
Joanna McDonough: “My Trutina melody painting is like its accompanying whisky. The melody is the true tune of this spirit: it is honest and, like the tune, is a linear succession of notes which the listener perceives as the ‘music’ – the whisky is also a succession of tastes resulting in a ‘whole’ taste experience. The painting is honest and clear.”
SPEY TENNE ‚RHAPSODY‘
Joanna McDonough: “Tenne is more flamboyant in style, so it most naturally became my ‘rhapsody’. A rhapsody features intense variations of mood, colour and tonality. It is free flowing but with some structure. I aimed to reflect this nature in my painting, which is slightly freer in form – and like Tenne has my own touch of sweetness with its ruby hues and vibrancy.
SPEY FUMARE ‚OVERTURE‘
Joanna McDonough: ”As Fumare was Speyside Distillery’s first peated whisky, naturally it was an overture, i.e. ‘an introduction to what is to come.’ The palette of this painting is taken from the tasting notes – in particular barley, caramel, orange and honey whisky – showing a gentle warmth which is given in the end notes of its special taste.”
