Die „Messe für Whisky, Spirits & more“ findet am 22.u. 23.März 2024 im „Flugzeughotel“ „NOVAPARK GRAZ“ statt.
Sie wird noch größer, moderner, umfangreicher als je zuvor, mit einer perfekten Infrastruktur.
Die Messe für „Whisky, Spirits & more“ steht für Whisky & Whiskey in all ihren Ausprägungen, aber auch für Rum, Gin und anderen verwandten Spirituosen.
Es ist eine Informations- und Genussmesse für Einsteiger und erfahrene „Connaisseurs“, eine Fachmesse für Gastronomie und Handel, und sie entwickelte sich immer mehr zur Kultur und Publikumsmesse.
50 renommierte Hersteller und Importeure werden neben neuen Produzenten und Händlern ihre Produkte vorstellen und dabei ausführlich über Rohstoffe und Herstellungsmethoden informieren und damit interessante und neue Hintergrundinformationen liefern.
Im Rahmen von Masterclasses – 6 pro Tag – gibt es zu ausgewählten Themen etwa 60minütige Vorträge und geführte Verkostungen, die tiefe und spannende Einblicke bringen.
Ein unterhaltsames Rahmenprogramm wie Pipe and Drums, die O Kelly Irish Dance Academy , Solopiper, Rettl Kilt & Fashion, ein Barbershop, Schoko Pralinen, 1 Cocktailbar, eine Guinnessbar, die NovaPark Piano Bar „Corrida“, die 80s Flieger Bar, sowie das Nova Park Restaurant mit scottish Food ergänzen die Fach- und Publikumsmesse an beiden Messetagen.
Die Whiskywelt blickt nach Graz
Einmal im Jahr ist es soweit und die Liebhaber feingeistiger Getränke pilgern nach Graz. Diese Messe ist ein Treffpunkt für Konsumenten und die Gastrobranche gleichermaßen. Whisky aus Schottland und dem Rest der Welt, Gin und Rum und dazu ein wenig Fernweh – das alles wird geboten. Helmut „Mc Schuly“ Schulhofer organisiert diese Veranstaltung bereits das sechste Mal:
„Schon nach der ersten Messe war klar, dass dieses Konzept passt. Es ist perfekte Unterhaltung für die Gäste und ein Riesenerfolg für die Aussteller.“

An 50 Ständen werden einheimische Produzenten und Händler neben Vertretern und Importeuren internationaler Marken ihre Produkte vorstellen. In Masterclasses gibt es Gelegenheit, spezielle Verkostungen zu genießen und Hintergrundinformationen zu sammeln. Ein unterhaltsames Rahmenprogramm und das kulinarische Angebot der Nova Park Küche runden das Programm ab.
Es gibt wohl keinen geschichtsträchtigeren Ort für schottischen Whisky als Lindores Abbey – jene Abtei, in der zum ersten Mal Whisky urkundlich erwähnt wurde, und zwar im Jahr 1494.
Dort, wo also die spirituelle Heimat des Wassers des Lebens liegt, in Newburgh, Fife, liegt seit 2017 auch die Lindores Abbey Distillery, gegründet vom Ehepaar Drew und Helen McKenzie-Smith. Sie produziert bereits ihren eigenen Whisky, und die Abfüllungen treffen auf viel Lob innerhalb der Whisky-Community.
Im Rahmen der Whiskymesse Nürnberg waren Drew und Helen McKenzie-Smith anwesend, um ihre Abfüllungen und die Brennerei zu präsentieren. Wir haben dort mit Helen McKenzie-Smith gesprochen, und sie erzählte uns über die Entstehung der Brennerei und die Abfüllungen von dort. Dunkel, fassstark, süffig: Er ist zurück, um Feinschmecker im besten Sinne im Dunkeln zu lassen. Der Eilean Dubh „The Dark One“ ist die Neuauflage einer ausverkauften Sonderabfüllung der Edradour Distillery. Benannt nach dem gälischen Ausdruck für „schwarze Insel“ hält der Single Malt, was er verspricht.
Seine Mahagoni-Farbe verdankt er der Reifung in ehemaligen Sherryfässern. Und zwar ausschließlich: Wie für „Scotland’s Little Gem“ üblich, ist auch der Eilean Dubh weder gefärbt noch kühlfiltriert. Bei knackigen 57,1% vol. Cask Strength umhüllt der Highland-Whisky Genießergaumen so ungehemmt mit köstlich dunkelfruchtiger, vollmundiger Kraft.

Niedrige Preise – hohe Prozente: Neue Preis-Leistungs-Tipps aus der Signatory 100 Proof Edition
Die 100 Proof Edition schließt seit Anfang des Jahres eine Lücke im Signatory-Sortiment. Die Single Malts der Reihe werden mit 57,1% vol. abgefüllt, dem Mindestgehalt, ab dem mit Alkohol getränktes Schießpulver entzündet werden kann. Hohe Prozente treffen dabei auf niedrige Preise.
Die neuen Preis-Leistungs-Hits reiften allesamt in mit Oloroso Sherry orbelegten Fässern – im Falle des ausdrucksstarken Ben Nevis 2015/2023 für insgesamt 8 Jahre. Der Glenrothes 2014/2023 ist trotz mehrfachen Bränden in der Brennerei nicht rauchig, anders als der 10-jährige Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2013/2023aus demtorfigen Zweig der Islay-Ikone.
Ein als Single Malt nach wie vor seltenes Erlebnis ist der leichte, blumige Glentauchers 2012/2023. Für voluminösen Genuss steht dagegen der Blair Athol 2014/2023, dessen Charakter Signatory mit den andalusischen Fässern unterstreicht. Der Caol Ila 2015/2023 schließlich verbindet kräftigen Küstenrauch mit dunkelfruchtiger Sherrysüße.

Älter & nachhaltiger denn je: Der limitierte Teerenpeli 15 y.o.
Im Jahr 2002 wurde erstmals Rohbrand in Finnlands erster und größter Whiskydestillerie gebrannt: Teerenpeli. Die weichen, süßen, zum Teil floralen Whiskys der finnischen Pioniere sind so beliebt, dass Teerenpeli mit zwei Pot Stills von Forsyths über 100.000 Liter Alkohol im Jahr produziert – rein mit erneuerbarer Energie. Eine erstaunliche Menge für das dünn besiedelte skandinavische Land, in dem Verkauf von und Werbung für alkoholische Getränke zahlreichen gesetzlichen Beschränkungen unterliegen.
Mit seinen 15 Jahren ist der Teerenpeli 15 y.o. der älteste Single Malt in der Geschichte der Destillerie. Aus finnischer Gerste gebrannt, reifte er in Bourbon- und Sherryfässern. So verbinden sich Noten von karamellisiertem Apfel mit Vanille und Eichenwürze.
Der limitierte Whisky wurde als erster in eine neue und umweltfreundlichere Flasche abgefüllt. Im Zuge von Teerenpelis Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen wird auch das restliche Sortiment folgen. Mit 40 Prozent weniger Gewicht und einem 25-prozentigen Anteil an recyceltem Glas tragen die Flaschen dazu bei, den ökologischen Fußabdruck der Brennerei noch weiter zu verringern.

Fast 100 Jahre nach ihrer ersten Eröffnung, knapp 40 Jahre nach ihrer Schließung, nicht ganz sechseinhalb Jahre nach der Bekanntgabe der geplanten Wiederinbetriebnahme (und nach einer nicht näher benannten Investition) gibt Diageo als Eigentümer heute die Wiedereröffnung der Port Ellen Distillery auf der Insel Islay bekannt.
Bis der Whisky aus der neuen alten Brennerei erhältlich sein wird, werden wir noch mindestens drei Jahre warten müssen. Für die Zeit bis dahin hat Diageo und Port Ellen einige Angebote:

DIAGEO’S ICONIC “GHOST” DISTILLERY RETURNS AFTER 40 YEARS, RE-ENVISIONED FOR THE FUTURE TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF EXPERIMENTATION IN SCOTCH WHISKY
PORT ELLEN, ISLAY, 12:00, 19th March 2024: In a landmark moment for Scotch Whisky, Port Ellen Distillery, on the world-famous whisky island of Islay reopened today more than 40 years after it closed.
As the finale in Diageo’s £185 million investment in Scotch Whisky distilleries and experiences, Port Ellen has been specially designed from the ground up to push the boundaries of Scotch through visionary experimentation, and uncover the mysterious dimensions of flavour in smoke.
The legendary Islay distillery has undergone a radical transformation which draws on its pioneering heritage to lead a trailblazing future. Established on Islay’s south coast in 1825, Port Ellen produced a distinctively smoky Scotch Whisky used primarily in blends, but ceased operating in 1983 alongside many other distilleries at the time. During closure, the whisky found incredible global acclaim and was eagerly sought out by collectors for its quality, character, and increasing rarity. In 2017 Diageo announced the intention to bring about Port Ellen distillery’s return and today marks that final step.
The re-envisioned distillery features ultra-modern design with an unobstructed line of sight through the transparent glass stillhouse to the stunning coastline of Islay, across the bay to Carraig Fhada lighthouse. At the centre of this rebirth are two new pairs of copper pot stills that will produce the first Port Ellen in over forty years. The Phoenix stills, recreated as an exact replica of the original stills from 1983, will run alongside a smaller set of Experimental stills, to allow for innovation to flourish from inception.
The underlying mission at Port Ellen is to chart an Atlas of Smoke and explore this flavour profile utilising a range of experimental elements at the distillery, uniquely designed to support this investigation. A distillery that holds a pioneering past, Port Ellen was the first to export whisky to North America as early as 1848, and led the introduction of a bonded warehouse system still used today. Legend has it that Port Ellen housed one of the first ‘spirit safes’ in Scotland, now an industry-wide mainstay, and the new distillery has drawn inspiration from this past storied connection, to reimagine it for a new generation of whisky explorers and innovators as a Ten Part Spirit Safe. This standout addition allows multiple cuts to be drawn from the heart of the run, accessing previously unexplored flavours and characters, and propels the whisky-making art to new heights of intricacy and complexity.
Further distillery innovations include a Six-part Roller Mill, to give added precision, and an onsite laboratory that will support this exploration into the mysterious flavour of smoke. The laboratory grants immediate testing of experiments onsite which reduces environmental impact. Furthermore, Port Ellen distillery will be carbon neutral from the start. The team have employed various methods to ensure it met this target including leveraging electricity sourced from neutral resources and deploying innovative systems to optimise water and heat usage. The energy used across the distillery is all obtained from renewable sources, including liquid biofuel, thus supporting our ambition to be a carbon neutral distillery which is also in line with Diageo’s Society 2030 Spirit of Progress plans.

From today, Port Ellen Gemini, a new release to celebrate the rebirth of the trailblazing Islay distillery, is now available to purchase. Presented as two illuminating dimensions of Port Ellen, each housed in spectacular crystal decanters, these are twin whiskies set on individual paths to mark a bright future for the distillery. The 44-Year-Old Scotch Whisky was drawn from three exceptional 1978 European oak casks, specifically selected long ago for this new experiment, before being split into two whiskies which took diverging paths of maturation.
This moment is also marked by the reveal of an incredible scientifically routed digital artwork, Out of the Ether, that forms the first chapter in the Port Ellen distillery’s mission to chart an Atlas of Smoke. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography, the chemical composition of the two Port Ellen Gemini whiskies has been analysed at key points over the last two years of their maturation, to give a detailed dataset that reveals precisely the differences in the additive and extractive impact of both casks.
With data visualisation experts Bose Collins, Port Ellen then developed a bespoke algorithm “Smoke DNAi” (Digital Neoteric Algorithmic image), to decode and visualise this data and explore whisky smoke’s intricate composition and evolution during aging. The artwork brings the magic of maturation to life: a stunning synesthetic visual simile of the flavour profile of these very rare, non-identical twin whiskies.
In the future, Port Ellen’s SmokeDNAi has the power to be used by the team at the distillery to visually compare and contrast other liquids – developed at the distillery or even beyond – to shine a fresh light on the smoky flavours within Scotch Whisky in an ongoing quest to chart the Atlas of Smoke.

Each element of the production process allows us to innovate from day one, with an on-site laboratory we can delve into scientific research to examine the possibilities of this legendary Islay malt. Collectively we will endeavour to maintain the undeniable quality of Port Ellen and create whiskies for the future. Through our bespoke algorithmic image machine we reveal today, we can learn even more about the enigma of smoke and bring people with us on this journey – from Islay to the world!’
Port Ellen distillery will welcome the whisky community, connoisseurs, collectors and invited guests to experience a world leading immersion into experimentation in Scotch. A range of experiences will be available to book from June, from a full day private immersion for connoisseurs, to shorter introductions to the production process at this exceptional distillery. Port Ellen will also hold a monthly open day to ensure that passionate followers from around the world will have a chance to see inside the re-envisioned distillery and witness Port Ellen spirit be crafted once again.
These experiences provide standout tastings of Port Ellen Gemini, the opportunity to draw from casks of Port Ellen historic stock and explore the maltings that have provided smoky malt to Islay distilleries since the 1970s. Within the original Port Ellen Pagoda, a new ideas and experimentation space allows visitors to act as auteur – to consider current and future experiments and explore what could possibly be created – in service of Port Ellen’s mission to examine every facet of flavour as it charts an Atlas of Smoke.

Port Ellen Gemini will be available in selected markets with a recommended retail selling price of £45,000 (inclusive of duties and taxes in the UK). Port Ellen Gemini Original has an ABV of 54.9% and Port Ellen Gemini Remnant has an ABV of 53.6%.
About Port Ellen Spirit Safe
“Legend has it that Port Ellen was also the site of the first trials of the spirit safe, but our extensive research has found no trace of such trials. After the closure of the distillery in 1983, the old spirit safe at Port Ellen was donated to Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Museum in London.
A photograph of the spirit safe features in a publication called Monuments of Industry, published in 1986. It records that the spirit safe is ‘perhaps the earliest spirit safe to survive’ dating it as c1824, and also states that it is ‘uniquely small in capacity, measuring 14.5 inches by 7 inches, by 13 inches high, with holders for three hydrometers’. The museum moved to Liverpool in 1994 and the Port Ellen spirit safe was sold at auction during the process of the move. The museum didn’t retain the details of the purchaser, so for now, the whereabouts of the Port Ellen spirit safe remains unknown.”

Der dänische Whisky-Produzent Stauning startet seinen ersten globalen Cocktailwettbewerb mit dem Namen Stauning Drinks Kollektive. Die Teilnahme an diesen Contest ist Barkeepern aus Dänemark, Deutschland, Frankreich, dem Vereinigten Königreich, den USA und Australien möglich.
Bis zum 4. Mai 2024 können Beiträge auf der Stauning-Website eingereicht werden. Die Cocktails dürfen aus maximal sechs Zutaten hergestellt werden, darunter muss selbstverständlich einem Stauning-Whisky sein. Zusätzlich müssen die Kreationen im Einklang mit diesen drei Grundpfeilern der Marke im Einklang stehen: Design, Nachhaltigkeit und Lokalität. Die eingereichten Cocktails werden vom globalen Markenbotschafter von Stauning, Ali Reynolds, zusammen mit den Gründern der Brennerei und angesehenen Branchenführern beurteilt.
Die zehn besten Einsendungen aus jedem Land erreichen das regionale Finale, welches im Juni und Juli stattfindet. Eine neue Abfüllung ist in der us-amerikanischen TTB-Datenbank aufgetaucht, sie kommt von der Speyside-Destillerie Benromach. Mit Benromach 2014 Cask Strength Batch 03 setzt Eigentümer Gordon & MacPhail die Serie der fassstarken Bottlings fort, die Etiketten der wohl kommenden Abfüllung sieht so aus:
Wie üblich der Hinweis zu den TTB-Einträgen: Dass ein Label in der TTB-Datenbank eingetragen wurde, bedeutet nicht automatisch, dass die Abfüllung dann auch erscheinen wird. Es ist allerdings ein sehr starker Hinweis darauf.
Bereits im vergangenen August kündigte The House of Suntory ihre Abfüllung Legent® Yamazaki Cask Finish Blend an (wir berichteten). Diese neue Edition entstand in der Zusammenarbeit zweier Whisky-Legenden. Auf der einen Seite Fred Noe, Master Distiller in 7. Generation aus der Jim Beam-Gründerfamilie, und auf der anderen Seite Shinji Fukuyo aus dem Gründerhaus des japanischen Whiskys und Suntorys Chief Blender in der 5. Generation. Fred Noe, Master Distiller in 7. Generation aus der Jim Beam-Gründerfamilie, und Shinji Fukuyo aus dem Gründerhaus des japanischen Whiskys und Suntorys Chief Blender in der 5. Generation, haben etwas Außergewöhnliches erschaffen. Seltene Fässer, zusätzliche Reifung und innovatives Blending wurden für diese neue Edition verwendet. Die Magie der Yamazaki Destillerie
Die Entwicklung der neuen Limited Edition begann mit der Herstellung des Kentucky Straight Bourbon, dieser wurde aus amerikanischem Getreide hergestellt und ist acht Jahre in Kentucky gereift. Anschließend wurde er, in der Yamazaki Distillery in den Außenbezirken von Kyoto veredelt und vermählt. Das warme, feuchte Klima und die einzigartigen Herstellungsprinzipien der Yamazaki Destillery trugen zu diesem außergewöhnlichen Whisky bei. Shinji ließ den Whisky in sorgfältig ausgewählten Weinfässern aus französischer Eiche und Sherryfässern aus spanischer Eiche nachreifen. Ein weiterer Teil erhielt sein Finish in seltenen Yamazaki-Fässern aus spanischer Eiche für eine vollmundige, malzige Tiefe und nuancierte Komplexität.
Abschließend wurden diese drei einzigartigen Komponenten zusammen mit einem weiterem, acht Jahre altem Bourbon Whiskey vermählt, um ein harmonisches Gleichgewicht von eichiger Wärme, sanftem Glanz und einem langen Abgang mit einer Prise Würze zu erhalten.

Dieser Whisky verbindet in seinem Geschmacksprofil die Ausgewogenheit der Eiche, die Süße des Sherrys und die Würzigkeit der Trockenfrüchte. Er ist vollmundig, rauchig und komplex. Benrinnes 1979 #62 Exceptional Cask
The crescendo of aromas in this whisky begins with musty hessian and attics before rising into honey-soaked pineapple and peaches. Magnificent hints of leather and elderflower soon follow. The palate expands on this theme with apricot jam, stewed apple and lychee before developing into antique oak, cigar boxes and musty earth. The finish oers dried fruits and aged tea. This kind of complexity requires nearly half a decade of quiet ageing so accept no substitute. ABV: 42.1% RRP: £1,800.00
Small Batch Glenlossie 2013
Aromas of spiced vanilla yoghurt open the nose of this Glenlossie leading to warm orchard fruits and green boiled sweets. The palate is fresh with flavours of apples and pears with honey, caramel, and clove rock. A long finish brings waves of sweet fruit and lingering wood spice. ABV: 46% RRP £70.00
Craigellachie 2013 #302040
Craigellachie’s muscular spirit shows emerging aromas of fresh hay, malt and fireworks, before orchard fruits and a softer floral side of rose petals and Port. The palate is notably thick, with more barley, eau de vie, underripe vanilla and blackberries before a pu of wood smoke and digestive biscuits appear. The finish is long and one can feel the spirits oils lingering and showing a touch of peppery spice. ABV: 55.4% RRP: £90.00
Knockdhu 2012 #7127
This Knockdhu has a dry, nutty nose expanding with time in the glass. It shows almonds and walnuts before green fruits and banana bread notes appear. The palate is an equally complex meeting of fruits, wood spice and distillate-driven nuttiness, oering an excellent mouthfeel. A little tobacco dances across the finish, with a burst of citrus and some honeyed green fruits. ABV: 58.8% RRP: £75.00
High Coast Peated 2012 #4333
The nose on this whisky is unmistakably High Coast. Opening with clean, chiselled peat smoke then fresh orchard fruit and icing sugar showing with time. The palate is powerful yet sophisticated and everything we’ve come to expect from this distillery. Peat smoke, crisp green apples, wood ash and some nice minerality shine through. The two years in an ex-Islay cask bring out a little more peat reek on a long finish. This is a wonderful dram from one of Sweden’s best. ABV: 59.8% RRP: £110.00
Ardmore 2009 #709317
This peaty Highlander has spent years luxuriating in a sweet Madeira cask. Its earthy aromas mingle nicely with sweet apricot notes and plenty of gummy fruits. The palate is wonderfully viscous with hugely chewy notes of fruity smoke, plums, charcoal, earthy peat, peaches and oak spice. There is huge complexity here. Lingering smoke comes in waves against an oily fruitiness. ABV: 54.2% RRP: £96.00
Scotch Whiskys, genauer Blended und Single Malts, mit deutlichem Torf und Rauch-Einfluss sowie ohne Angabe einer Herkunfts-Brennerei bilden heute den Schwerpunkt auf Whiskyfun. Keinen Platz in diesem Tasting fanden die Abfüllungen Islay Mist und Black Bottle. Die Beiden bezeichnet Serge Valentin als Vorfahren dieser Kategorie, und sie hätten sich seit ihrer Blütezeit stark verändert (besonders Letzterer). Und wir vermuten, dass diese Veränderungen seiner Meinung nach nicht zum Vorteil waren.
Die Sechs der heutigen Session nutzen mit ihren Bewertungen den mittleren Teil der 80-Punkte Skala voll aus. Von guten 82 bis zu sehr guten 87 Punkten fallen Serge’s Beurteilungen heute aus. Im Detail stellt sich das heutige Tasting so dar:

Einen Neuzugang innerhalb ihrer Wine Cask Collection stellt die Highland-Brennerei Aberfeldy vor. Aberfeldy 21 Years Old Malbec Cask Finish entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem argentinischen Weingut Finca Ambrosia. Dewar’s master blender Stephanie Macleod und der Winzer der Finca Ambrosia, Daniel Pi, wählten gemeinsam die Fässer für das Finish aus. Sie entschieden sich für Fässer aus französischer Eichen, in denen zuvor der Rotwein Viña Unica lagerte. Vor dem achtmonatigen Finish reifte der Single Malt in refill bourbon und sherry barrels und hogsheads.
“This delicate yet complex Finca Ambrosia cask finish opens with intriguing notes of sweet, toasted cereal, herbal sage, and hints of rosemary. It then begins to develop with ripe strawberries, drizzled in Aberfeldy’s signature Highland honey notes, and then it’s delicately sharpened with notes of blackcurrant, melting to floral notes of rose and violet, and a background hint of cinnamon spice. Settling on the palate the fruit sings and rejoices, soothing to a creamy vanilla and endlessly smooth finish.”
Aberfeldy 21 Years Old Malbec Cask Finish ist mit 46 % Vol., in natürlicher Farbe und ohne Kühlfiltration abgefüllt. Erhältlich ist dieses Bottling in der Brennerei sowie im Fachhandel in Märkten wie Australien, Belgien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Luxemburg, Malaysia, den Niederlanden, Singapur, Taiwan, dem Vereinigten Königreich und den USA. Das schottische Familienunternehmen Douglas Laing & Co. versendet österliche Grüße und startet den Deutschland exklusiven Verkauf der auf 960 Flaschen limitierten Scallywag Easter Edition No. 8. Bereits zum achten Mal versüßt uns der kleine Foxterrier das Osterfest und läutet den Frühling ein. Die Scallywag Easter Edition No. 8 wurde mit 48% Vol. und einem hohen Anteil im Sherryfass gereifter Whiskys abgefüllt und ist ganz in Douglas Laing Tradition ungefärbt und nicht kältefiltriert.
Die Ausstattung der limitierten Abfüllung strahlt in diesem Jahr vor frühlingshaften Farben und präsentiert den Familienhund der Laings mit niedlichen Osterhasenohren und einem kleinen Halstuch inmitten bunter Ostereier.

Tastingnotes
Darf in keinem Osterkörbchen fehlen! Die diesjährige Scallywag Easter Edition überzeugt mit Noten von cremiger Vollmilchschokolade umspielt von Karamell und feinster Vanille. Fruchtige Noten von saftigen roten Beeren und einem Hauch Pfirsich runden das Geschmackserlebnis ab und machen die Scallywag Easter Edition auch in diesem Jahr zur perfekten Begleitung zur kleinen Nascherei.
Die auf den Orkneyinseln ansässige Deerness Distillery erhält von der staatlich gestützten Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) eine Finanzierung in Höhe von £246,000 (nicht ganz 290.000 €). Dieses Geld wird für die Bauarbeiten und die Ausrüstung des Cafés und der Brennerei verwendet, darunter Maischebottiche und copper whisky stills.
Die Deerness Distillery liegt in Deerness, auf einer Halbinsel am östlichen Ende des Orkney-Festlandes und wurde 2016 von den Eheleute Stuart und Adelle Brown gegründet. Damit sei die Brennerei die erste neue Whiskybrennerei auf der schottischen Insel seit 138 Jahren, wie es das Ehepaar formulierte (dem widersprach allerdings die Kimbland Distillery, wir berichteten). Bis jetz produziert die Brennerei verschiedene Gins, Wodkas und Kaffeeliköre. Im Sommer diesen Jahres soll dann auch die Whisky-Herstellung aus schottischer Gerste und lokal angebautem Getreide beginnen. Die Destillerie soll dann ein Besucherzentrum mit Café und Shop beherbergen, von dem aus der Herstellungsprozess des Whiskys zu sehen sein wird.
Die Bladnoch Distillery stellt in ihrer heutigen englischsprachigen Presseaussendung (Sie finden diese im Anschluss) das erste Kapitel ihrer neuen Serie „Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch“ vor. Mit und in dieser Reihe möchte die Brennerei besondere Menschen würdigen, die eine große Affinität zu den Malts der südlichsten Brennerei Schottlands haben.
Kapitel 1 der Serie ist eine Hommage an Mr. Arnold, einem lebenslangen Bewunderer von Bladnoch. Er besuchte die Brennerei zum ersten Mal, nachdem er neugierig auf Single Malt Scotch Whisky geworden war. Nachdem er Bladnochs Whiskys probiert und mehr über die Fähigkeiten erfahren hatte, die für deren Herstellung erforderlich sind, wurde er ein regelmäßiger Besucher der Brennerei und ein großer Bewunderer der Menschen, die dort arbeiteten. Dr. Nick Savage, Master Distiller bei Bladnoch, lud ih ein, um für die erste Abfüllung der Serie ein Fass auszuwählen. Mr. Arnold, der ohne Vornamen bleibt, entschied für Cask 89, ein 2008 befülltes first fill Californian red wine hogshead. Dieses liefert Noten von fruchtiger Johannisbeermarmelade, Ingwer, und Kräutern und sorgt für einen süßen und wärmenden Abgang.
Kapitel 1 von „Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch“ ist mit einem Alkoholgehalt von 56,7 % in Fassstärke, in natürlicher Farbe und ohne Kühlfiltrierung abgefüllt. Die Flasche erscheint in einer Präsentationsbox, die auch Briefe von Herrn Arnold und Dr. Nick Savage enthält. Introducing Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch – A celebration of Bladnoch’s most avid admirers
Bladnoch, Scotland’s southernmost distillery, has introduced Chapter 1 of Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch, the first release in a new limited-edition series celebrating and selected by individuals who have a deep affinity with its exceptional whiskies.
Loch Maberry is the source of the River Bladnoch, which provides the water that has sustained Bladnoch Distillery since it was founded in 1817. The name of the series acknowledges the significance of those who most appreciate Bladnoch’s bold Galloway spirit, and the role they play in keeping the distillery in flow.
Chapter 1 in the series pays tribute to Mr Arnold, a lifelong admirer of Bladnoch whose passion and enthusiasm exemplifies the dedication of the distillery’s highly skilled team. Its release also marks the commencement of the selection process for Chapter 2, which will be conducted via Bladnoch’s website.
Mr Arnold became familiar with Bladnoch when he owned a home in Garlieston, close to the distillery, in Dumfries and Galloway’s Wigtown.
He first visited the distillery after becoming curious about single malt Scotch. After trying Bladnoch’s meticulously crafted whiskies and learning more about the time-honoured skills required to create them, he became a regular visitor to the distillery and a great admirer of the people who worked there.
In recognition of his many years of appreciation, he was invited by Dr Nick Savage, Master Distiller at Bladnoch, to become the first member of the extended Bladnoch family to select a cask for bottling. Guided by Nick, Mr Arnold nosed and tasted a variety of samples before choosing Cask 89. Distilled in 2008 and matured in a first fill Californian red wine hogshead, Chapter 1 of Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch displays notes of fruity blackcurrant jam, ginger, and herbs and delivers a sweet and warming finish.
Mr Arnold said:
“It is an honour to be the story of Chapter 1. Spending time with Dr Nick Savage, the Master Distiller, and learning about the process of cask selection was remarkable. His focus is on taste first, and I admire that.
“The sweet and warming flavours of the whisky we chose tell the story of my Bladnoch journey, and how welcome I have always felt at the distillery. Its richness reflects how my Bladnoch experiences have enhanced my life.”
Dr Nick Savage added:
“Helping Mr Arnold to explore our casks and find the right one to capture his Bladnoch adventure, was incredibly rewarding and an experience I will never forget. “As we blind-tasted and compared samples, it was a joy to see whisky making through his eyes and interpret what Bladnoch means to him. I look forward to selecting our next supporter for Chapter 2 of this unique series.”
Bottled at a cask strength ABV of 56.7%, Chapter 1 of Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch has a natural colour of bronze oak and is non-chill filtered. It is encased in a presentation box which also contains letters from Mr Arnold and Dr Nick Savage describing their experiences of collaborating to craft the whisky.
