Rauchige Whiskys, die nicht nur keine Altersangabe auf dem Etikett tragen, sondern auch keine Destillerie als Herkunft – sollte man da nicht eher skeptisch sein? Wer länger schon Whisky genießt und generell den Rauchigen nicht abgeneigt ist, der weiß, dass das nicht der Fall sein muss. Viele unabhängige Abfüller haben genau solche Whiskys im Programm, und manche davon sind sogar exzellent.
Auch das halbe Dutzend, das Serge heute verkostet, muss sich nicht verstecken, was den Geschmack anbelangt: Von gut bis ausgezeichnet ist dabei alles zu finden – und ganz vorne ist eine deutsche Abfüllung, nämlich der Classic of Islay von Jack Wiebers.
Unsere Leser werden sich vielleicht an „The Intrepid“ erinnern, die größte Whiskyflasche der Welt mit einem Inhalt von 311 Litern – und zwar nicht irgendeines Whiskys, sondern gefüllt mit 32 Jahre alten Macallan aus zwei Schwesterfässern. Diese Flasche dann wurde im Vorjahr um satte 1,3 Millionen Euro versteigert (wir berichteten hier), und zwar an einen damals anonymen Bieter.
Jetzt wurde öffentlich, wohin die Flasche gekommen ist – und sie wird sich in „standesgemäßer“ Umgebung finden: nämlich in Ho Chi Minh Stadt, in der weltweit wertvollsten Spirituosensammlung (Schätzwert über 150 Millionen Pfund), in mehreren Jahrzehnten von Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan aus Leidenschaft zusammengestellt. Der Vietnamese hat sich durch konstante Sammeltätigkeit ein umwerfende Sammlung an Spirituosen (Schwerpunkte sind Whisky und Cognac) zusammengestellt und konnte die knapp 180cm große Flasche nicht an sich vorbeigehen lassen.

Mit der Colour Collection will Macallan die natürlichen Farbtöne der Reifung in Sherryfässern in den Mittelpunkt stellen und komuniziert diese auch über die Verschlusskappen. Die Reifung erfolgte zum Großteil in amerikanischen Eichenfässern mit einem kleinen Anteil von europäischen Eichenfässern.

Der US-Getränkekonzern Brown-Forman (mit Marken wie Jack Daniel’s oder Benriach und Glendronach in Schottland) berichtet von einem durchwachsenen ersten Quartal des Finanzjahres: Zwar stieg der Umsatz um 3% auf 1 Milliarde US-Dollar, aber dabei ging der operative Gewinn um 4% auf 327 Millionen Dollar zurück. BROWN-FORMAN REPORTS FIRST QUARTER FISCAL 2024 RESULTS; REAFFIRMS FULL YEAR OUTLOOK
August 30, 2023, LOUISVILLE, KY — Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE: BFA, BFB) reported financial results for its first quarter of fiscal 2024 ended July 31, 2023, with reported net sales increasing 3%1 to $1.0 billion (+2% on an organic basis2). In the quarter, reported operating income decreased 4% to $327 million (-6% on an organic basis) and diluted earnings per share decreased 7% to $0.48.
Lawson Whiting, Brown-Forman’s President and Chief Executive Officer stated,
“As anticipated, our first quarter growth was impacted by the difficult shipment comparison from fiscal 2023, when we rebuilt inventory impacted by prior glass supply challenges. We continue to be confident in the strength of our people, our brands, and our business, and reaffirm our full-year fiscal 2024 guidance of 5-7% organic net sales growth and 6-8% organic operating income growth.”
First Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Highlights
Broad-based reported net sales growth was delivered across Emerging3 and Developed International3 markets and the Travel Retail3 channel. Reported net sales declined in the United States reflecting an estimated net decrease in distributor inventories, partially due to cycling against a significant inventory rebuild during the same period last year.
On a reported basis, portfolio growth was led by:
The recently acquired Gin Mare and Diplomático brands which collectively increased the company’s reported net sales by 2%,
New Mix RTD which delivered very strong reported net sales growth of 52% (+32% organic),
el Jimador with reported net sales growth of 27% (+26% organic), and
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple with double-digit reported net sales growth of 49% (+52% organic).
Reported gross margin expanded 90 basis points.
Significant brand investment supporting the existing portfolio, the launch of Jack Daniel’s & Coca-Cola RTD, and the recent acquisitions of Gin Mare and Diplomático increased reported advertising expense 19% (+14% organic).
First Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Brand Results
Reported net sales for Whiskey3 products declined 1% (flat organic) led by Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack due to an estimated net decrease in distributor inventories, partially offset by the growth of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple and Jack Daniel’s super-premium expressions such as Jack Daniel’s Sinatra and Jack Daniel’s Bonded. While reported net sales of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was flat, the brand led the company’s organic growth (+2%) even as it was negatively impacted by an estimated net decrease in distributor inventories in the United States.
Ready-to-Drink3 (RTD) growth continued to be driven by consumer preference for convenience and flavor. New Mix’s reported net sales increased 52% (+32% organic) propelled by higher volumes and prices along with the positive effect of foreign exchange. Reported net sales of Jack Daniel’s RTD/RTP portfolio was flat (flat organic) due to lower volumes of Jack Daniel’s & Cola as we launched the Jack Daniel’s & Coca-Cola RTD.
Reported net sales for the tequila portfolio increased 15% (+12% organic). el Jimador fueled the growth with reported net sales of 27% (+26% organic) driven by higher prices, particularly in the United States, and higher volumes in Colombia. Herradura increased reported net sales 1% (-3% organic) as the positive effect of foreign exchange was largely offset by lower volumes in the United States, reflecting an estimated net decrease in distributor inventories.
Gin Mare and Diplomático drove the significant increase in Rest of Portfolio’s3 reported net sales growth of 97% (+5% organic).
First Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Market Results
Emerging3 marketsgrew reported net sales 27% (+32% organic) reflecting very strong growth of New Mix in Mexico and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey in the United Arab Emirates and Poland.
Developed International3 markets’ reported net sales increased 5% (flat organic) fueled by Gin Mare and Diplomático in Italy along with the launch of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple in South Korea. Growth was partially offset by lower volumes of Jack Daniel’s RTDs in the United Kingdom and Australia.
The Travel Retail3channel sustained strong growth with reported net sales increasing 13% (+9% organic) driven primarily by higher volumes of Woodford Reserve as well as Jack Daniel’s super-premium expressions such as Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey.
Reported net sales in the United States decreased 8% (-9% organic). The decline was driven by lower volumes reflecting an estimated net decrease in distributor inventories, partially offset by higher prices across the portfolio led by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. The estimated net decrease in distributor inventories was partially due to cycling against a significant inventory rebuild during the same period last year as we continued to recover from supply chain disruptions.
First Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Other P&L Items
Reported gross profit increased 5% (+5% organic). Gross margin expanded 90 basis points to 62.7%, driven by favorable price/mix, lower supply chain disruption related costs and lower tariff-related costs, which was partially offset by higher input costs and the negative effect of foreign exchange.
Reported advertising expense grew 19% (+14% organic) driven by the launch of Jack Daniel’s & Coca-Cola RTD, increased investment in Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, and the acquisitions of Gin Mare and Diplomático. Reported selling, general, and administrative expenses increased 14% (+12% organic) largely driven by higher compensation-related expenses.
The company’s reported operating income decreased by 4% (-6% organic) due to the timing of higher operating expense, partially offset by gross margin expansion.
Diluted earnings per share declined by $0.04 driven primarily by the decrease in reported operating income and higher interest expense.
First Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Financial Stewardship
On July 27, 2023, the Brown-Forman Board of Directors declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.2055 per share on its Class A and Class B common stock. The dividend is payable on October 2, 2023, to stockholders of record on September 5, 2023. Brown-Forman, a member of the prestigious S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, has paid regular quarterly cash dividends for 79 consecutive years and has increased the regular dividend for 39 consecutive years.
Fiscal 2024 Outlook
While we remain optimistic about our prospects for growth of organic net sales and organic operating income in fiscal 2024, we continue to believe trends will normalize after two consecutive years of double-digit organic net sales growth. Accordingly, we reiterate our guidance and expect the following in fiscal 2024:
Reflecting the strength of our portfolio of brands, our pricing strategy, and strong consumer demand, we expect organic net sales growth in the 5% to 7% range.
Based on the above organic net sales growth outlook, and our expectation that continued input cost pressures will be partially offset by lower supply chain disruption costs, we anticipate organic operating income growth in the 6% to 8% range.
We expect our fiscal 2024 effective tax rate to be in the range of approximately 21% to 23%.
Capital expenditures are planned to be in the range of $250 to $270 million.

LONDON, 30th August 2023: Brora Iris, a stunning work of art representing the eye of a Scottish Wildcat; the emblem of Brora Distillery, has been unveiled by Diageo. The 50-Year-Old Single Malt is expected to fetch between £250,000 – £500,000 at auction when it goes under the hammer on 5th October at Hopetoun House, Edinburgh in partnership with Sotheby’s.
This ultra-rare spirit, crafted by distillers at Brora five decades ago, is the oldest Brora Single Malt that has ever been bottled. Brora Iris is presented in a 1.5litre decanter and suspended within an imposing one-of-a-kind handcrafted stone sculpture and has been donated to The Distillers One of One Charity Auction by Diageo, the world’s leading Scotch whisky distiller.
Founded in 1819, Brora Distillery, in Sutherland, garnered early acclaim for the quality of its spirit and craftsmanship. When the stills fell silent in 1983, Brora soon earned world renown as one of the lost icons of the whisky world, with historic bottlings eagerly sought out by collectors to set auction records. In 2021 distilling recommenced at Brora after the distillery was meticulously restored as part of a major investment by Diageo, crafting new spirit for generations to come. It now welcomes small groups of visitors by-appointment only in limited numbers and releases highly sought-out capsules of historic whisky from its ‘ghost’ stock.
A collaboration by a number of highly skilled artists and craftspeople, the Brora Iris consists of a 1.5 litre decanter representing the wildcat’s iris, while the stone sculpture has been hewn from the same limestone that was used to build Brora Distillery, by Scotland based sculptor and artist Michelle De Bruin. Finally, it is crowned by a bronze wildcat figure, which acts as a key to the decanter, cast by one of the UK’s leading animalier sculptor’s Jonathan Knight. Together the piece creates a remarkable, never to be repeated, celebration of the skill, dedication and attention to detail that is the hallmark of Brora.
Drawn from a tiny capsule of Brora’s distilling past, this vanishingly rare ghost stock suspended in time, is from the celebrated year of 1972. Brora Iris Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson describes it as “a style that has come to define the Brora iconic status”, and was crafted only during fleeting periods of the distillery’s past. Whisky expert Charles Maclean, upon tasting the liquid, commented: “The aroma opens a door to the past and reveals Brora: perfectly presented, alive today and correct in every detail”. The eventual owner will also be invited to explore the reawakened distillery with five guests and be guided by distillery host Andrew Flatt through an exquisite tasting experience.

“It is with great pleasure that we are able to introduce Brora Iris. Few distilleries in the world conjure such majesty and awe as Brora and the opportunity that this one off art piece and incredible whisky presents puts this item as one of the top lots within the auction. Having tasted it myself, I can say that this is a truly exceptional Brora.”
Now in its second year, The Distillers One of One Charity Auction will take place at Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh, on Thursday 5th October 2023. The biennial series of auctions is led by The Distillers’ Charity, the philanthropic arm of The Worshipful Company of Distillers. The proceeds raised from the sale of the auction will be donated to the Distillers’ Charity, principally to the Youth Action Fund, dedicated to transforming the lives of young people in Scotland.

Tomintoul Single Malt Scotch Whisky has announced an innovative new range of contemporary cask finishes launching this summer.

Tasting Crew Deutschland präsentiert „Bruderschaft“ – SC-Whisky der holländischen Sculte Distillery am 2. September in Zwickau
Der Rückblick:
Whiskymesse Mühlheim a d Ruhr im Oktober 2019 – Sculte aus Ootmarsum zeigt sich in Deutschland. Eine Destille aus Holland mit schon richtig viel Erfolg im eigenen Land und auf internationalem Parkett. Mit ihrer Klassik-Line gereift in Virgin-Oak Fässern aus holländischer Eiche eine Rarität, die heute mit 4000 Interessenten bei nur ca. 500 Flaschen pro jährliche Abfüllung echte Begehrlichkeiten erzeugt. Selbst David Stewart von Balvenie ist an den Sculte Fässern interessiert. Alle bisherigen 8 Bottlings sind mit Silber – Gold und Doppelgold international prämiert.
Die Tasting Crew Deutschland mit dem Import von The Lakes Distillery ebenfalls in Mühlheim am Start. Eigentlich ein Garant zur Verkostung und Verkauf von Whiskies, die im Fachhandel kaum noch erhältlich sind, hier als Unterstützer des Importeurs.
Die Chemie, wie man so schön zu sagen pflegt, hat zwischen den beiden Teams gepasst.
Schnell war der Entschluss gefasst, zukünftig etwas miteinander machen zu wollen.
Ein 1. Besuch der TC bei Sculte endete mit dem ersten Ansatz: Wir machen in der Tasting Lounge ein Tasting mit Gerard und Roy von Sculte. Die allgemein bekannten folgenden Widrigkeiten ließen uns zappeln.
Im Herbst 2021 war es endlich so weit, das erste gemeinsame Tasting zur Distillery Sculte konnte stattfinden. 20 Teilnehmer, unwissend was sie erwartet, konnten den erzählerischen Kurzweiligkeiten gepaart mit unglaublichem Herzblut zum Thema Whisky und den daraus resultierenden Erfolgen nur mit Staunen und Begeisterung zuhören. Eine neue 20-köpfige Fangemeinde für diesen holländischen Whisky war geboren.
Eine Handfill-Abfüllung eigens für unser Tasting von 20 Flaschen aus einem Fassprojekt, welches später den Namen Dreifaltigkeit erhalten sollte, hatten die Beiden im Gepäck, wobei der nicht verkaufte Rest wieder mit zurück nach Holland gehen sollte.
Nicht nur dass jeder Teilnehmer eine Flasche wollte, nein, es wurde in die Runde gemutmaßt: „Du brauchst doch die Flasche nicht?“ um eine 2. zu ergattern.
Der Ausblick:
Unsere Zusammenarbeit vertiefte sich weiter und es entstand ein gemeinsames Fassprojekt welches nunmehr am 02.September 2023 während der Highland Games des Clan McGregor im Freibad Crossen/Zwickau abgefüllt und ab verkauft wird.
Gerard und Roy von Sculte werden an diesem Tag im Zelt der Tasting Crew selbst mit vor Ort sein und natürlich auch Flaschen signieren.
Der Name dieses Projektes kann treffender und tiefgreifender nicht sein.

Whisky aus dem Land der schwarzen Strände, Ponys und Elfen: Flóki Single Malts & Distiller’s Choice
In Island gibt es schwarze Strände, flauschige Ponys, einen offiziellen Elfenbeauftragten und: abwechslungsreichen Single Malt Whisky. Eimverk ist die erste Whisky-Destillerie der Insel. Seit 2009 fängt das fünfköpfige Team, angeführt von den Brüdern Haraldur und Egill Gauti Þorkelsson (ausgesprochen: Thorkelsson), mit Flóki Single Malt die vielfältigen Aromen seiner arktischen Heimat ein.
Für die Flóki-Abfüllungen verwendet Eimverk ausschließlich die in Island heimische, besonders robuste Bio-Gerste. Diese enthält wenig Stärke und Zucker, weshalb die Þorkelsson-Brüder etwa 50 Prozent mehr Gerste pro Flasche Whisky verwenden müssen. Das Ergebnis: herrlich untypische Aromen, die bei Whisky-Genießern für Überraschung sorgen.
Vom Flóki Single Malt mit Birch Finish, Beer Finish oder Sherry Cask Finish bis zum außergewöhnlichen Flóki Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve: Die unverfälschten Spirituosen der isländischen Brenner stehen wieder vielfältig für Neugierige bereit.
Ebenfalls neu ist die Flóki Distiller’s Choice 2016/2023. Das fassstarke Single Cask reifte zu Füßen des Vulkans Hekla. Auf drei Jahre im American Oak Virgin Cask folgten vier Jahre der Veredelung im ehemaligen Stout Cask der isländischen Brauerei Malbygg.

Die englische Circumstance Distillery aus Bristol wird – im letzten Jahr erschien ihr erster Whisky (wir berichteten) – im nächsten Monat ihren ersten Single Grain Rye Whisky veröffentlichen. Die Maische dieses Whiskys besteht aus 51 % gemälztem englischem Roggen und 49 % gemälzter englischer Gerste, bei der Gärung kam Met Hefe und Saion beer yeast zum Einsatz. Destilliert wurde er in einem copper pot still mit einer 4-Platten-Kupferkolonne, und reifte anschließend für 3 Jahre in First-Fill Ex-Bourbon-Fässern, neuen Fässern aus europäischer Eiche und sherry conditioned casks.
Die Erstausgabe des Rye Whisky der Circumstance Distillery ist auf 437 Flaschen limitiert, diese sind einzeln nummeriert. Der Whisky wird am 8. September ab 10 Uhr auf der Website der Brennerei und bei ausgewählten Händlern wie Master of Malt und The Whiskey Exchange erhältlich sein. Circumstance Distillery Unveils Its First Single Grain Rye Whisky
Bristol, UK – Circumstance Distillery, the award-winning distillery known for its innovative approach to whisky making, is proud to announce the release of its first Single Grain Rye Whisky.
This new release marks a significant milestone for Circumstance Distillery, as they expand their range of premium whiskies.
“This release is a landmark for Circumstance Distillery.” said head distiller Mark Scott, “We have released whiskies from two of our three multi-grain mash bills. This release is from the third and final mash bill.”
The mash for this whisky used 51% malted English rye and 49% malted English barley. The grains were fermented on a mead yeast for 14 days. It was distilled using a copper pot still with a 4 plate copper column and was aged in first fill ex-bourbon, new European oak, and sherry conditioned casks for 3 years.
“Our focus on extra long fermentations with beer yeasts has enabled us to marry the amazing flavours of English rye with the character that Circumstance Distillery is renowned for.” said Danny Walker, co-founder of Circumstance Distillery
“We are very proud of this release.” said co-founder Liam Hirt, “European rye whisky is one of the most exciting categories in today’s whisky landscape, and this whisky shows that Circumstance Distillery is at the forefront of the category.”

The first release of Circumstance Distillery’s Rye Whisky is limited to 437 bottles, each individually numbered. The whisky will be available for purchase from 10am on the 8h September from the distillery’s website, and from selected merchants including Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange.

Grünes Licht für ihren neuen Komplex im Bandeath Industrial Estate in Throsk außerhalb von Fallin haben Ian Macleod Distillers heute erhalten! Der Bauantrag für das neue Projekt mit neun Lagerhäusern, einem Blend-Center mit zugehörigem Tanklager und einem gut ausgestatteten Bürogebäude wurde heute (29. August) von den Ratsmitgliedern des Stirling Council genehmigt. Ihren Antrag reichte das Unternehmen im April ein (wir berichteten)
Der Standort mit einer Fläche von 20,2 Acres (müssten nicht ganz 81.000 qm entsprechen) verfügt über eine gute Verkehrsanbindung an die anderen Standorte der Ian Macleod Distillers, wie es in der folgenden englischsprachigen Pressemitteilung heißt. Fässer aus den Destillerien des Unternehmens (Rosebank in Falkirk, Glengoynein Stirlingshire und Tamdhu in der Speyside) werden am neuen Standort lagern. Die Abfüllanlage von IMD befindet sich auch weiterhin in Broxburn, die Blended- und Single-Malt-Whiskys werden dann vom neuen zusätzlichen Standort per Tankwagen auf der Straße dorthin transportiert.
Mit dem Bau werden 55 beschäftigt werden können, nach der Fertigstellung sollen dort dann 40 Arbeitsplätze entstehen. Baubeginn sowie geplante Fertigstellung nannte das Unternehmen nicht.

Green light for new whisky storage facility
A planning application for a new whisky storage warehouse scheme at Throsk has been approved today (29th August) by councillors on Stirling Council. The planning approval is subject to conditions and a legal agreement being signed (CGI images courtesy of Michael Laird Architects attached).
The development at Bandeath Industrial Estate, on behalf of Ian Macleod Distillers (IMD), will house a suite of modern buildings. It is anticipated that 40 jobs will be created once the development is delivered.
The facility will provide additional capacity for the company’s operations across Scotland. Anchored in the industrial area of Stirling, it comprises nine whisky maturation warehouses, a blend centre with associated tank farm, and a well-equipped office building.
Covering 20.2 acres, the site is an ideally located with good transport links to other IMD sites and has the benefit of being zoned for employment use in the Stirling Local Development Plan.
Casks from IMD’s distilleries will be filled and matured at the site, augmenting the company’s existing warehouse storage capacity. The distilleries are Rosebank in Falkirk, Glengoyne in Stirlingshire, and Tamdhu in Knockando on Speyside. In time, blended and single malt whisky will be transported by road tanker to IMD’s bottling facility in Broxburn. Once packaged, the products will be sold in the UK and exported to USA, Europe, and Far East, thereby benefiting the Scottish economy.
In addition to the creation of 40 jobs when the development is completed, it is anticipated that construction will employ 55 people. Where possible, local companies will be selected for the design and construction of the complex. The provision of apprenticeships by contractors will form part of the assessment of their suitability.
The site is close to the River Forth with its rich biodiversity, and the design of the buildings incorporates good levels of sustainability with high thermal efficiency, arranged to limit their environmental impact.
These principles are carried through into the construction phase in line with IMD’s own environmental and sustainability commitments. Temperature control in occupied buildings will be managed using electrically powered systems in line with IMD’s strategy of working towards net zero carbon emissions.
Commenting on the approval Mike Younger, Finance Director for IMD, said:
“This new development at Bandeath will provide additional capacity to support our operations across Scotland. Through broadening capacity in our spirit supply chain there will be a clear beneficial impact to this business and the local and national economy. We welcome the opportunity to provide employment opportunities during construction and when the project is finally built.
“As part of our broader commitment to addressing climate change and delivering net zero, the facility will be highly sustainable and have minimal environmental impact. We will respect the rich biodiversity of its location by the River Forth.
“We would like to thank the community for its support of our proposals and look forward to continuing to engage with them as the scheme progresses.”
Der unabhängige Abfüller und Blender Brave New Spirits aus Glasgow erhält die Baugenehmigung für seine neue Witchburn Distillery. Auf dem ehemaligen RAF-Luftwaffenstützpunkt Machrihanish in Campbeltown kann nun eine neue Malt Whisky Brennerei entstehen, das Argyll & Bute Council entsprach dem im Mai eingereichten Bauantrag (wir berichteten). Am Konzept der Destillerie gab es keine Änderungen: Die neue Brennerei zwischen dem Flughafen Campbeltown und Machrihanish Village wird 2 Millionen Liter Alkohol pro Jahr produzieren, und kann zukünftig auf eine Kapazität 4 Millionen erweitert werden. Betrieben wird sie zu 100 % mit erneuerbarer Energie. Die Witchburn Distillery wird mit einem Maischbottich mit einer Kapazität von 5 Tonnen ausgestattet; 16 Washbacks mit einem Fassungsvermögen von jeweils 30.000 Litern ermöglichen eine Fermentationsdauer von 96 Stunden oder länger. Die Destillation finden in zwei Wash Stills mit einem Fassungsvermögen von jeweils 16.000 Litern und zwei Spirit Stills einem jeweiligen Fassungsvermögen von 7.000 Litern statt. Die Witchburn Distillery wird rund 30 dauerhafte neue Arbeitsplätze in Produktion, Lagerung und Vertrieb schaffen. Und bereits im letzten Quartal 2024 soll die Produktion beginnen.

BRAVE NEW SPIRITS GRANTED APPROVAL FOR NEW WITCHBURN DISTILLERY IN CAMPBELTOWN
Glasgow. 29/08/23. The Glasgow-based independent whisky bottler and blender Brave New Spirits, have today announced that they have been granted planning permission from Argyll & Bute council, for a new single malt whisky distillery at the former RAF Machrihanish airbase in Campbeltown.
The new Net Zero carbon production distillery, located between Campbeltown Airport and Machrihanish Village, will produce 2 million litres of alcohol per year – with the potential and scope for expansion to 4 million in the future, and will be powered by 100% green renewable energy sources. Its state-of-the-art heat and energy recovery systems will make Witchburn one of the most environmentally friendly distilleries in Scotland.
When complete Witchburn will operate with 1 Mash tun – with a capacity of 5 tons; 16 Washbacks – each with a capacity of 30,000 litres, allowing for a fermentation period of 96 hours or more; 2 Wash Stills – each with a capacity of 16,000 litres and 2 Spirit Stills – each with a capacity of 7,000 litres.
Witchburn, which is the brainchild of Brave New Spirits founders Adam Hochul and Alexander Springensguth, will have its production headed by Founding Master Distiller, Andrew Nairn, former Distillery Manager of Glenkinchie, Strathmill and Borders Distillery. It will use traditional distilling craftsmanship to produce unpeated, lightly peated and heavily peated malts.
The distillery will operate with a carefully planned wood policy, with the majority of its spirit to be filled into barrels from famous American Bourbon producers, Oloroso Sherry casks from various Bodegas, selected Tawny and Ruby Port barriques and organic Bordeaux wine barriques. Witchburn will mature its casks in on-site warehousing close to the sea, and in warehouses in the Campbeltown area.
The distillery takes its name from the word Witch; originally meant folk healers, mostly ‘wised women’ using herbs and power of imagination. Previously amongst the most respected people in village life. Burn; which comes from the Scots Gaelic for naturally occurring fresh water stream or very small river that flows into a larger river.
Witchburn Distillery, which plans to do its part to bring the glory days back to Scotland’s former whisky capital, will create around 30 permanent new jobs in production, warehousing, and distribution,
Commenting on the news, Adam Hochul, Co-Founder of Brave New Spirits and the new Witchburn Distillery, said:

Production at Witchburn Distillery is due to commence in the last quarter of 2024.

Nur ganz kurz zusammengefasst: Das Besondere ihrer Whisky-Herstellung liegt in der Kombination verschiedener Destillationen, deren Anzahl nicht 2 oder 3 ergibt, sondern 2,81. Sieben unabhängige Abfüllungen aus der auch Beasts of Dufftown genannten Brennerei bilden die heutige Verkostung für Serge Valentin. Diese wissen zu gefallen und erhalten Benotungen bis an die 90-Punkte-Grenze.
