Oran Blended Scotch Whisky Wins Silver Medals at International Spirits Challenge
Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 Both Take Home Silvers
NEW YORK (June 4, 2024) – Oran Blended Scotch Whisky, introduced by The Perfect Fifth in late 2023, has won silver medals at the International Spirits Challenge for its Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 bottlings.
Whisky expert Jim Murray blended both Scotches for The Perfect Fifth and remarks,
“There is a temptation to disregard blended Scotch in this time of single malt, yet the blend of grain whisky and malt is a creation which offers myriad possibilities. The objective in the creation of Oran is to offer delicate complexity and finely tuned balance, which I believe we achieved.”
Both releases are 50-50-50 blends, 50 percent single malt Scotch Whisky, 50 percent single grain Scotch Whisky, and 50 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Both blends are limited releases, containing only 465 bottles each.
Murray designed Oran to be an “old school” blend recognizable to whisky lovers of the heyday of blended whisky some 100 years ago. Oran’s grain and malt components are created separately but ultimately combined as the perfect complement to one another.
A total of 11 different casks were used to make both blends. Some of the casks were split between both blends but with differing ratios. Blend No. 1 is composed exclusively of Ex-Bourbon casks while Blend No. 2 distinguishes itself with the addition of a sherried cask component.
Oran Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 are available in limited quantities at retailers in New York, New Jersey and California. It is also available online at www.theperfectfifth.com. Suggested retail pricing is $189 per 700 mL.
The International Spirits Challenge is the premiere event for promoting outstanding quality spirits from more than 70 countries. The competition is founded on a rigorous and independent judging process, which encourages the high caliber of spirits entered each year.
About The Perfect Fifth
The Perfect Fifth was created in 2019 by Karl Schoen, who was inspired by watching his family members toast milestones with Scotch Whisky as he grew up. As Karl began his own exploration into the world of Scotch Whisky, he enjoyed finding stellar single cask bottlings and sharing them with others. This led to the formation of The Perfect Fifth, where Karl and his brother Ben source the best quality whisky from all over Scotland. Together they travel throughout Scotland, sampling cask after cask until they find those worthy to be selected for The Perfect Fifth. Few casks make the cut, which is why The Perfect Fifth releases are limited editions. Like the musical interval, The Perfect Fifth releases consist of multiple layers, each one broad and deep, which when combined, make a beautiful assembly meant to be shared with family and friends.

The Single Cask ‘Chippy Sauce’ is made using a 9-year-old single cask whisky from Benrinnes Distillery and uses balsamic vinegar of Modena to create that classic sweet & spicy flavour. Blue Lagoon has been a Glasgow phenomenon for nearly 50 years. Italian born entrepreneur Ersilio Varese & childhood sweetheart Edda Varese opened the first Blue Lagoon fish and chip shop on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street in 1975. The company is now headed up by Director Alessandro Varese, who manages venues across the city.
Founded in Fife, The Whisky Sauce Co specialises in creating the best whisky sauces in the country – creating a single cask range for the first-time which were debuted to lucky whisky fans at Feis Ile whisky festival on Islay at the end of May.
The Single Cask recently took on the challenge of demystifying whisky flavour as they relaunched their brand. By using five mood categories, whisky fans can quickly navigate to whichever whiskies they are in the mood for.

Vor drei Wochen haben wir darüber berichtet, dass die Oxford Distillery nach Yorkshire zieht und dort unter einem neuen Namen (Fielden Whisky of England) produzieren wird. Die ursprüngliche Anlage ließ sich aus baulichen Gründen nicht erweitern – und nach dem teilweisen Einstieg von Diageo hatte man Ausbaupläne und das Geld dafür.
Der Gründer der Oxford Artisanal Distillery, Tom Nicolson, verließ die Brennerei nach dem Einstieg von Diageo im Vorjahr, blieb aber Shareholder. Über das Rebranding und den Umzug wurde er erst im Mai informiert – eine Entwicklung, über die er sich enttäuscht zeigte. Sein Ausstieg war seiner Aussage nach erfolgt, da er die Zukunft der Destillerie in Oxford durch den Einstieg des Getränkemultis gesichert sah – von einem Abwandern war damals nicht gesprochen worden. Er denkt auch, dass die neuen Inhaber damit Versprechen an die Stadt Oxford gebrochen haben.
Nicolson hat nun laut einem Bericht von The Spirits Business eine Initiative zur Erhaltung der Brennerei gestartet, nachdem die Brennerei mit 31. Mai Besuchertouren eingestellt und die Mitarbeiter des Besucherzentrums freigestellt wurden. Die „Friends of Toad„-Gruppe (Toad steht für The Oxford Artisanal Distillery) bittet die neuen Besitzer der Destillerie darum, die im Gebäude befindlichen Stills dort im Originalzustand (der allerdings nicht funktionstüchtig ist) zurückzulassen (am neuen Standort werden größere Stills gebaut, um die Produktionsmenge mehr als zu verzehnfachen). Man wolle in Oxford die Brennerei für unabhängige Marken offenhalten und mit der lokalen Bevölkerung zusammenarbeiten. Man hätte auch schon jemanden gefunden, der die Stills reparieren könne.
Man will keine Konkurrenz sein, sondern dort nur neutralen Grain Spirit brennen und die Jobs erhalten:
“We’re not even in competition, we just want to save the jobs. What we will do is we’ll raise capital to fulfil the promises of building a visitor centre, and then just keep this distillery running in Oxford. There’s so much support for it.”
We want to talk to the distillery and just find a way to say, ‘look, come on, you know, it’s so much easier for you to just walk away, leave the keys’, and it’s more cost, it would cost them more money to decommission everything and take everything down.”
Dave Smith, CEO von Fielden, dem Nachfolgeunternehmen, steht dem Ganzen skeptisch gegenüber. Er meint, dass die alten Stills aus Sicherheits- und Gesundheitsgründen nicht mehr benutzbar seien und der Preis einer Renovierung wirtschaftlich einfach nicht tragbar sei. Genau deswegen sei man nach Yorkshire gezogen, weil die Gegebenheiten in Oxford einem wirtschaftlichen Betrieb vor allem bei einer Produktionsausweitung im Wege standen.

Die kanadische Whiskymarke Crown Royal ist hier bei uns vor allem dafür bekannt, dass Jim Murray den Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye zum weltbesten Whisky 2016 gekürt hat (wir berichteten damals hier darüber). Nun gibt es von der zu Diageo gehörenden Marke eine Neuheit: Den Crown Royal Single Malt Canadian Whisky. In den USA wird er übermorgen mit einer Aktionam Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan vorgestellt (er ist in einer Eisskulptur verborgen, die über 24 Stunden schmelzen und die Flasche freigeben wird) – und er kostet dort 55 Dollar.
Ob diese interessante Abfüllung auch nach Europa importiert wird, können wir zur Zeit nicht sagen – sollte es aber der Fall sein, werden wir natürlich darüber berichten.

Zu ihrem 200. Geburtstag hat die Destillerie Fettercairn in den schottischen Highlands eine ganz besondere Jubiläumskollektion auf den Markt gebracht: Sechs Abfüllungen aus den Jahren 1964, 1973, 1988, 1995, 1999 und 2021 geben einen Überblick über die Whiskys der letzten 60 Jahre aus der Brennerei. Präsentiert wird das Ganze in einer ansprechenden und sehr dekorativen Box, die von John Galvin aus Metall und Holz gebaut wurde und mit ihrem Design das Licht, das durch die Bäume bei Fettercarin fällt, widerspiegeln soll.
Ganze zehn Stück der mit 100.000 Pfund (ca. 125.000 Euro) bepreisten Box gibt es, und nachfolgend listen wir die Tasting Notes der sechs enthaltenen Flaschen auf, um Ihre Fantasie etwas auf die Reise zu senden:
The 1964
Die bislang älteste Abfüllung aus Fettercairn, destilliert im Geburtsjahr von Distillery Manager Stewart Walker, der jetzt 35 Jahre bei Fettercairn arbeitet.
Colour – Bronzed gold richness, flecked with mahogany
Taste – Gentle hints of seared pineapple and caramelised fruit, married with a soft medley of raisins, dried prunes, and mellow wood spices.
Finish – An orchestration of Brazil nuts, bergamot, light cacao and clove.
The 1973
49 Jahre alt, destilliert, als das letzte klassische Dunnage Warehouse bei Fettercairn gebaut wurde, in einer für die Whiskyindustrie nicht einfachen Zeit.
Colour – Bronze with deep red notes

Der 35 Jahre alte Whisky wurde ins Fass gelegt, als der längstdienende Distillery Manager Douglas Cooper in Ruhestand ging. Er war Teil des Teams, das den ikonischen Kühlungsring aus Kupfer um die Pot Still erfand.

Taste – Rich passion fruit and a balance of fine and dark cacao
Finish – Aromatic spices, including cassia and nutmeg.
The 1995
Ein Lieblingsfass von Gregg Glass, 28 Jahre alt.
Colour – Burnished gold with hazel traces
Taste – Golden syrup and poached strawberries, sultanas and warm apricot tart. Light and aromatic citrus is balanced by cassia bark.
Finish – Raspberry compote, light cacao and green tea, with soft wood spice.
The 1998
Ein Whisky mit 25 Jahren, der den Experimentiergeist der Brennerei einfängt. Der Hausstil von tropischen Früchten, durch ein ex-Cognac-Fass perfekt ausbalanciert.

The 2021
Ein dreijähriger Whisky, destilliert zum Start des Programms zur Wiederaufforstung schottischer Eiche. Der einzige Fettercairn, der jemals so jung abgefüllt wurde.
Colour – Deep ruby
Taste – Ripe pineapple enhanced by dark berry fruits, fresh strawberry, red liquorice and notes of cacao.
Finish – Dark cherries, gently roasted coffee, Madagascan vanilla and soft baking spices
Zwei Neuheiten hat Ardbeg heute in einem Schreiben an die Committee-Mitglieder angekündigt: Eine auf 400 Flaschen limitierte Edition namens Ardbeg The Abyss, in der das jüngste verwendete Fass ein stark getoastetes Fass aus französischer Eiche aus dem Jahr 1989 ist – jener Fasstyp, der dem ursprünglichen Corryvreckan seine Kraft verlieh. Das Alter (34yo) und die Seltenheit dieser Ausgabe haben natürlich ihren Preis – Ardbeg hat ihn mit 25.000 Euro pro Flasche festgelegt. Sammler mit entsprechendem finanziellen Background können hier ihr Interesse daran anmelden. Zu jedem Whisky gibt es übrigens auch ein extra für den Release gestaltetes Comicbuch des bekannten Zeichners Tradd Moore dazu
Für jene, die ein etwas beschränkteres Budget haben, gibt es eine Sonderausgabe von Corryvreckan, die nur bei Ardbeg im Besucherzentrum erhältlich sein wird. Der schon erwähnte Comickünstler Tradd Moore hat dazu vier verschiedene Etiketten gestaltet.

Deep autumn sunset
Aroma
Rich, pungent and aromatic, but mellow, deep and gentle at the same time. Aromas of toasting marshmallows, aromatic tea leaves, roasted chestnut and baking sourdough bread draw you in, with something altogether zestier circling nearby, like lemon balsam. There is a lingering, background sweetness, like demerara sugar, and then a whiff of antique leather. A splash of water opens up the bouquet to reveal more herbal top notes, with a whisper of lemon sherbet and pine resin.
Taste
A wonderfully mellow mouthfeel with a hint of spiciness, which takes a dramatic turn when bold new flavours enter: dark chocolate, pecan nut toffee, old leather, clove, ginger and a touch of treacle and creosote. The smoke is always there, beautifully entwined with the oak tannins.
Finish
On the aftertaste, enticing hints of baked apple, aniseed and oak.
Eine letzte Wendung
Ardbeg The Abyss ist ein außergewöhnlich seltener, auf 400 Flaschen limitierter Whisky. Während das legendäre Herz des Corryvreckan für viele ein Rätsel bleiben wird, gibt es dennoch eine Möglichkeit, die legendäre Kunst von Tradd Moore mit Eurem Ardbeg zu genießen.
In diesem Monat stellen wir eine Corryvreckan-Sonderedition vor, die ausschließlich hier im Besucherzentrum der Destillerie erhältlich sein wird (solange der Vorrat reicht). Diese Flaschen, die unseren aktuellen Corryvreckan-Whisky enthalten, sind mit limitierten Etiketten von Tradd Moore versehen. Jedes der vier Quadriptychen zeigt eine Szene von Islay, wie sie mit den Augen und der Fantasie eines außergewöhnlichen Künstlers wahrgenommen wurde.

Teerenpeli Distillery’s Finnish distilling expertise has been recognized again in international competitions. Teerenpeli Distillery, founded in Lahti in 2002, has developed whiskey-making expertise in Finland with long-term work and accelerated the cooperation of the Nordic distilleries.
DOUBLE GOLD FOR TEERENPELI SINGLE MALT WHISKIES
In the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition, Teerenpeli Distillery’s KULO and Aged 15 Years both achieved a whopping 98/100 points and the Gold Outstanding mention. In addition, PALO and LÄNKI both received silver with 93 and 92 points. This was the second IWSC Gold Outstanding mention for KULO. Three of the award-winning whiskies have been launched after the IWSC Worldwide Whiskyproducer award Teerenpeli Distillery recieved in 2020. It is an indication of the preservation of the quality level of the distillery products. This year’s IWSC jury evaluated KULO as follows:

Asia’s biggest whisky competition, the Tokyo Whisky & Spirit Competition, also brought good news to Teerenpeli Distillery. KULO won gold for the third year in a row and LAHJA, launched only on the Japanese market, achieved silver.

Abgefüllt wird der Speymalt von Gordon & MacPhail – ein absolutes Privileg des unabhängigen Traditionsbetriebs. Berry Bros. & Rudd demonstriert. Und zwar eine über 300-jährige Expertise auf dem Gebiet der Premium-Spirituosen. Die Beweisobjekte? Vier exklusive Speyside Single Casks für Kirsch-Kunden mit außergewöhnlichen Finishes.
Dem Secret Speyside 2003/2024 gönnten die Experten ein Finale in einem Grappa Cask. Wer eine der lediglich 50 Flaschen ergattert, wird mit Noten von Apfel und Trauben sowie in Honig eingelegten Aprikosen, Heidekraut und Eichenwürze belohnt. In pittoresker Abgeschiedenheit destilliert, führt der Aultmore 2006/2024 weit über die Grenzen Schottlands hinaus: Der Speysider wurde in einem Tequila Cask vollendet. So verschmelzen hier süße Agavennoten, tropische Frucht und Pfeffer mit den für Aultmore typischen kräutrig-floralen Einschlägen, Vanille und Honig.
Nach Frankreich verschlägt es Genießer mit den beiden anderen Exklusivabfüllungen. Nach Veredelung im Calvados Cask wandelt man mit dem von knackigen Äpfeln und Birnen, warmem Apfelkuchen mit Zimt und Honig sowie Apfelholzrauch geprägten Dailuaine 2007/2024 durch sommerliche Obstgärten. Üppig, lebendig & fruchtig: Stauning Rye aus Sherry Casks
Abenteuergeist und Experimentierfreude gehören mindestens so zur DNA der Brennerei Stauning wie die regionalen Zutaten von Dänemarks Westküste. Zum Beispiel: Roggen. Von Feldern in Fahrraddistanz entfernt bezogen, wird das Getreide aufwendig auf dem hauseigenen Malzboden gemälzt und gemeinsam mit Gerstenmalz zum Flaggschiff der dänischen Destillateure, dem runden Stauning Rye gebrannt.
Für eine limitierte Sonderedition wurde der preisgekrönte Whisky in American Virgin Oak gereift und in Sherryfässern aus Jerez veredelt. Das Finale in insgesamt 13 handverlesenen Oloroso und Moscatel Casks zeigt Staunings flüssige Version eines Roggenbrotes von einer üppigen, lebendigen und fruchtigen Seite. Noten von Vanilleschoten treffen dabei auf Sevilla-Orange, Schwarztee und Demerara-Zucker.

Nach dem großen Erfolg der letzten Châteauneuf-du-Pape vor mittlerweile mehr als 6 Jahren freut sich Whiskymax, Deutschlands Generalimporteur von Tullibardine, die neue Auflage „The Murray 2008-2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Finish“ für den deutschen Markt präsentieren zu dürfen.
Diese 2008 destillierte und 2024 abgefüllte Abfüllung ist auf nur 15 720 Flaschen weltweit limitiert, von denen nicht einmal 900 den Weg nach Deutschland finden wird. Abgefüllt ist der Whisky – The Murray-typisch – mit 46% ABV. Die prestigeträchtigen Rotweinfässer verstärken den charakteristischen Tullibardine-Stil von Vanille-, Karamell- und Eichennoten mit einer reichen und fruchtigen Komplexität. Aromen von dunklen Früchten wie Brombeeren und Pflaumen gesellen sich zum Aroma, am Gaumen durchdringt eine subtile Würze den Fruchtcocktail und entwickelt einen tiefen und voluminösen Dram, der mit einer süßen Himbeernote und einem cremigen Abgang endet.

Im vergangenen Monat erschien mit der Bladnoch Waterfall 05 2024 Edition der fünfte, letzte und abschließende Teil der Waterfall Edition der Lowland-Destillerie (wir berichteten). Mit der von Bladnoch Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage ins Leben gerufen Serie zeigte die Brennerei, wie durch unterschiedliche Reifung einen ganz anderen Charakter bei gleichem Spirit erreicht werden kann.
Dieser Reihe folgt nun die The Wave, die fünfteilige limitierte Master Distiller’s Collection wird den Vermählungsprozess von Whiskyfässern demonstrieren. Hierfür wählte Dr. Nick Savage fünf 1.500 Liter fassende Amontillado-Sherryfässer aus, die mit Whiskys aus verschiedenen Fassarten-Kombinationen gefüllt wurden. Für Wave I: Time & Maturation wurde das erste Amontillado-Sherryfass – es war mit einer Kombination ehemaliger Bourbonfässer befüllt – ausgewählt, dieser Whisky wurde anschließend mit dem verbleibenden Whisky der Waterfall 05 2024 Edition der ersten Master Distiller’s Collection vermählt. Dieser einzigartige Ansatz, so heißt es in der englischsprachigen Pressemitteilung, die Sie im Anschluss finden, verbindet beide Serien in einer unendlichen Whisky-Reise.
Bladnoch Wave I: Time & Maturation ist mit 53,8 % vol. abgefüllt, nicht kühlgefiltert und hat seine natürliche Farbe. Bladnoch Distillery unveils The Wave – a new limited-edition series showcasing the five pillars of whisky making
Bladnoch, Scotland’s southernmost whisky distillery, has launched The Wave, the second chapter within the Master Distiller’s Collection.
The Wave is a five-part limited-edition series which demonstrates the marrying process of whisky casks, with each annual release revealing one of the five whisky making pillars used by master distiller, Dr Nick Savage.
Released today (4 June 2024), Wave I: Time & Maturation epitomises Bladnoch’s method of selecting casks at the peak time in their maturation process to ensure optimal flavours in the whisky.
The Wave is a natural progression from The Waterfall Series, which concluded with the release of Bladnoch Waterfall 05 2024 which was unveiled at the distillery’s annual Waterfall Day festival in May. Both The Waterfall Series and The Wave form part of Bladnoch’s Master Distiller’s Collection.
To embark on The Wave journey, Dr Nick Savage selected five 1,500 litre Amontillado sherry tuns. Each tun is filled with whiskies from various combinations of cask types to marry together from the distillery’s 207-year-old bluestone warehouses. Each year the cask types will be revealed and depict another pillar of Bladnoch whisky making. The remaining whisky will be decanted into the following year’s tun, creating a common thread and a wave effect throughout the series, with the fifth and final release featuring components from the full collection.
Under Nick’s exceptional care, the first Amontillado sherry tun used to craft Wave I: Time & Maturation was filled with a combination of remarkable ex-bourbon casks from Bladnoch’s maturing stocks and married with the remaining whisky from Waterfall 05 2024 Edition of the first Master Distiller’s Collection. This unique approach connects both series in an infinite whisky voyage.
Over the course of five years, each release in The Wave series will be accompanied by a music track which represents the whisky’s unique journey and signifies how each cask takes notes from the other, building year on year. The piano composition released with Wave I: Time & Maturation reflects how the whiskies develop over time.
Dr Nick Savage, Master Distiller at Bladnoch Distillery, said: “We only ever select a cask when the time is right, not because it’s old or has reached a certain age. That right ‘time’ is determined by our deep understanding of maturation dynamics. It’s the moment of peak flavour in our warehouse environment – a climate where nothing is forced.
“The Wave is a strong example of Bladnoch’s taste-first approach to whisky making and a real demonstration of our bold Galloway spirit. With these single malts, we not only strive to take people on a journey into whisky making, but also to provide them with a taste experience, aiming to challenge preconceptions and build understanding along the way.”
Bottled at 53.8% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural in colour, Wave I: Time & Maturation opens with floral pine needles, fresh cut oak on the nose and imparts notes of sweet oak and toasted coconut on the palate, with a sweet, warm, refreshing finish.
The edition is limited to 1,817 bottles in tribute to the year the distillery was founded and has an RRSP of £150. It is available exclusively in the UK and Australia from bladnoch.com.
To celebrate the new chapter in The Master Distiller’s Collection, the distillery will host Bladnoch Wave Weekend in June 2025. Details will be released first to those who purchase Wave I: Time & Maturation.
