The existing range, which includes expressions hailing from Islay and Ireland, has now been enhanced with the introduction of age statements for the very first time. Glen Scotia unveils ‘Campbeltown Malts Festival 2024’ limited-edition release
Glen Scotia has unveiled its 2024 Festival Edition release – a limited-edition bottling to celebrate the Campbeltown Malts Festival (21st and 22nd of May 2024), the annual event which celebrates the region’s incredible whisky past and present.
Glen Scotia’s yearly festival bottlings are known for being intriguing, bold expressions, and the 2024 global release is no exception. The nine-year-old unpeated single malt was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before being finished in the finest Fino sherry casks for six months.
The result is a charmingly unconventional dram which brings vibrant flavours of citrus and white orchard fruit along with hints of oak spice. Natural in colour, its mouthfeel is satisfyingly dry before it finishes with a subtle but distinctive maritime note.
Following on from the success of Glen Scotia’s first-ever on-pack virtual experience with last year’s Festival Edition, the 2024 edition will again offer fans the chance to go behind the scenes of the distillery.
By scanning the on-pack QR code, viewers will be transported to the ‘Sound of Glen Scotia’.
Created by whisky expert and musician, Neil Ridley, music producer, Dean Horner, and Scottish singer-songwriter, Jenny Sturgeon, Sound of Glen Scotia will allow audiences to create their very own music track by putting together soundbites captured at the distillery with the musical track ‘Copper Heart’, which was created by the trio for last year’s Malts Festival.
From banging casks as drumbeats and mash tuns churning to soundbites of the distillery team’s discussions during production, the soundbites allow audiences to enjoy a completely immersive tasting experience as they sip this year’s Festival Release.
Available to purchase online and in specialist retailers globally, Glen Scotia’s Campbeltown Malts Festival 2024 release is non-chill filtered, bottled at cask strength (56.2% ABV) and retails for £65.

Edinburgh, Isle of Raasay, London, 22nd April 2024 – R&B Distillers has secured planning permission from Argyll and Bute Council for its Machrihanish Distillery, the first farm-to-bottle distillery in Campbeltown in over 180 years. R&B purchased the Dhurrie Farm in Machrihanish in 2021, and having received the green light for the distillery development – starting with whisky production followed by a full visitor experience, shop, and tasting room – will now work with various stakeholders around environmental guidelines and other conditions before beginning construction on the site next year.

The Machrihanish Distillery will deliver a new single malt Scotch whisky for R&B, who already own the award-winning Isle of Raasay Distillery, of which R&B says: “while different in style of spirit and region, will exhibit a similar philosophy around provenance, quality, and community regeneration”.
R&B plans to develop a sustainable net zero distilling model that removes any fossil fuel use from the whisky distilling process, using regenerative, environmentally friendly farming practices and creating greater biodiversity in the surrounding area. Up to 20 new jobs will be created in the region over time, having a positive impact on the local economy.

R&B Distillers is also announcing the acquisition of a controlling stake in Caskshare.com, a global eCommerce platform and bottler of single cask spirits. Caskshare specialises in offering whisky fans single cask whiskies by the bottle, including Scotch whiskies, R&B-owned brands, and world whiskies, and enables producers to sell directly to consumers worldwide. R&B plans to add other cask-aged spirits like rum and cognac over time and will initially target markets in Europe and the United States.

R&B Distillers reported revenue of £5.0 million in the year ended 31st December 2023, and now sells in 40 markets worldwide after launching the Isle of Raasay Gin in mid-2019 and the Isle of Raasay Single Malt at the end of 2020. Ardgowan Distillery has announced the two final additions to its celebrated Clydebuilt whisky series: Anchorsmith and Draughtsman Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies.
The penultimate release in the Clydebuilt series, Anchorsmith combines six distinct whiskies from renowned Lowland, Speyside, and Highland distilleries, each matured in first fill oloroso sherry casks and handpicked by Master Whisky Maker Max McFarlane.
Marking the final chapter of the series, Draughtsman oers a grand finale to savour. This unique blend marries a small parcel of Ardgowan’s oldest hand selected casks – including a 25 year old malt – with a selection of distinctive eight year old malts matured in first fill oloroso sherry casks.

After almost 7 years’ careful planning, Ardgowan Distillery Limited’s ergonomic, energy ecient distillery and visitor experience, which will create up to 47 local jobs and produce up to 1m litres of premium whisky per year, is due to open later this year.
The ambitious plans for the new net-zero distillery include cutting-edge technologies and partnerships with new technology developers to deliver a truly carbon-neutral spirit. The distillery has partnered with Heriot-Watt University and engineers Briggs of Burton to develop technology to capture all of the CO2 in its fermentation process and transform it into green biomethane – a technique which has never been used in a Scotch whisky distillery before.
The innovative distillery design uses low environmental impact composite cladding, timber and steel materials to create a modern Nordic long hall, symbolising resurrection and rising from the ashes of the former Ardgowan Distillery in Greenock, which was bombed during the 1941 Blitz.

The Cabrach Distillery prepares for launch in heartland of malt whisky
A new Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery, which will breathe new life into a remote area of north-east Scotland, is preparing to open its doors this summer, having reached a major milestone with the arrival of its new stills.
The Cabrach Distillery will herald the return of real Cabrach whisky after a long sleep of more than 170 years and is the cornerstone of The Cabrach Trust’s transformational regeneration masterplan for the area.
A social enterprise and the first Community Interest Company of its kind, The Cabrach Distillery will distil, mature and bottle a single malt Scotch whisky of unparalleled provenance and repute. Due to the distillery’s unique purpose and limited scale, bottles of The Cabrach whisky will be scarce and highly sought-after.
The Cabrach is a unique part of Scotland on the rugged edge of Speyside where highland geography, rich cultural history, and a distinctive community spirit intersect to create an inimitable sense of place. The area’s storied history of illicit distilling paved the way for modern whisky production methods and traditions that live far beyond Speyside. Once home to more than 1,000 residents, depopulation and decline have resulted in fewer than 100 people today.

As a purpose-driven and community owned distillery, the project aspires to meet the highest social and environmental standards, creating 12 full-time jobs and 50 volunteering opportunities in the process. All future profits will be legally enshrined to further progress the Trust’s regeneration vision.

The Cabrach Distillery stands pride of place at the centre of Inverharroch Farm, within painstakingly restored 19th century stone steadings which will also house a café and heritage centre. World-renowned coppersmiths Forsyths, based in nearby Rothes, has built the copper stills, which have now been transported to The Cabrach, and undertaken all major aspects of the construction.

In a first for the whisky industry, the Trust agreed a unique partnership with Forsyths which included a generous philanthropic contribution. In recognition of its support, the Trust will enshrine Forsyths as a founding partner alongside the Ethos Foundation and Bently Foundation which have both generously supported the project, alongside further funding from Highlands & Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Government.

Ahead of the opening, The Cabrach Distillery has introduced The Cabrach Collective, a small community of founding champions who will join the journey to revive the long-lost craft of whisky making in The Cabrach. The Collective will be limited to no more than 1,849 members, in tribute to the old steadings, home of The Cabrach Distillery, which have stood at Inverharroch since 1849.

The Feering Early Harvest Tasting Notes
Colour: Natural colour of early evening sun on a field of barley.
Nose: Gentle floral, heathery tones and notes of honey combine with the distant hint of dying embers on a bothy hearth.
Palate: The nose continues in the palate. Fresh butterscotch combines with sweet vanilla and heather. The hint of sweet smoke continues, subtle in the background.
Finish: The finish is clean and fresh, leaving just enough to tempt you back for another taste.
ABV: 46% and non-chill filtered.
About The Cabrach and whisky
The illicit distilling of whisky in Scotland was seen as a ‘right of man’ at the end of the 17th century and no place in Scotland did a higher concentration of illicit distilling happen than in The Cabrach. Attempts to enforce excise duty on the spirit were therefore met with resistance, ranging from riots to the adoption of ever more inventive ways of avoidance.
The Cabrach’s inhabitants showed extraordinary ingenuity in this clandestine activity, creating an unparalleled network of stills and distribution to evade revenue officers. Spirits travelled far and wide, across the border into England, to Scotland’s North Sea ports and beyond, lending solidarity to the struggles of the Jacobites – and making many rich in the process.
However, legal production in The Cabrach also boomed for a short but crucial period in Scotland’s malt whisky story. By the time spirit once again flows from Cabrach stills, over 170 years will have passed since legal distilling in the area came to an untimely end. In 1823, a significant change in legislation succeeded in encouraging three Cabrach families to establish legally-regulated distilleries on their farms – Blackmiddens, Lesmurdie, and Tomnaven. For more than 30 years, these distilleries flourished and real Cabrach whisky was held in the highest possible regard, securing top billing alongside The Glenlivet. However, various factors impacted on their economic viability, and one by one they closed.
The Cabrach Trust’s development of The Cabrach Distillery is well underway. This transformational project is designed to breathe new life into the area; famed for its role in the birth of malt whisky. Production scheduled to commence later this year, will showcase the craft and alchemy of making Scotland’s national drink and tell the story of the historic region.
Once complete, The Cabrach Distillery, wholly owned by The Cabrach Trust, will be unique in quality, purpose, and limited scale. Producing 100,000 litres of spirit each year, with barley sourced from the fields adjacent to the distillery and from nearby farms, the project will maintain an overarching commitment to sustainability, incorporating an innovative energy and recycling circularity. Importantly, the distillery will operate as a social enterprise, with future revenues set to support the Trust’s community regeneration mission.
About The Cabrach Trust
A registered charity formed in 2013, The Cabrach Trust was set up in response to the need to preserve the cultural heritage of The Cabrach and safeguard its remote community. It was founded by Grant Gordon OBE, a philanthropist and member of William Grant family of distillers.
In 2013, through its generous donors, the Trust acquired the historic Inverharroch Farm and its 170 acres of land and through community asset transfer acquired the Old School and Hall and the Acorn Community Centre.
The Trust has developed a community-led regeneration masterplan that will see the development of projects such as a historic distillery and a new heritage centre on its land. Herein, Inverharroch will be developed as a community learning, rural skills, and heritage hub.
Last year, more than 2,000 people visited the new all-abilities Cabrach Discovery Trail, which combines information on the natural landscape, habitats, and wildlife of the Cabrach, as well as opportunities to engage with nature through activities such as bird watching in a custom-made nature hide on the banks of the River Deveron and pond-dipping in two new nature ponds.
In February, The Cabrach also created worldwide headlines. In 2022, the Trust reintroduced The Cabrach Picnic and Games after a hiatus of 87 years and last year initiated the hunt for the lost silver Rose Bowl which was traditionally awarded to the best-performing athlete at the event. After a public plea last summer, Adrian Taylor in Devon, grandson of the last winner of the Rose Bowl, returned the silverware to Moray so it could be awarded once more at the Picnic and Games.
Earlier this month, the Trust marked National Tweed Day (Wednesday 3 April) with the launch of its inaugural Cabrach Tweed. This project was delivered by a group of eight women from the Cabrach community, who curated a palette and pattern which brought to life the natural beauty of the area.

Von der A Few Barrels Company findet ein 25-jähriger Auchentoshanseinen Platz in der Verkostung. Und wie eigentlich recht oft wissen die unabhängigen Abfüller die Qualitäten einer Brennerei aufzuzeigen:
Innerhalb ihrer limitierten Huntress-Serie präsentiert die Nc’nean Distillery ihren nach eigenen Angaben bisher innovativsten Whisky. Die Brennerei stellt durch Änderungen der Cut Points zwei unterschiedliche Spirits im Jahr her. Der eine ist dafür vorgehen, erst nach mehr als zehn Jahren auf den Markt zu kommen, der andere wird mit einem jüngeren Alter abgefüllt. Der Spirit für Nc’nean Huntress Orchard Cobbler stammt aus der Produktion der Woche nach der Umstellung und liefert ungewöhnlich hohe Fruchtverbindungen. So fruchtig, dass der Whisky nach einem der Lieblingsdessert des Teams benannt ist.
Nc’nean Huntress – Orchard Cobbler reifte in einer Kombination aus STR-Casks (shaved, toasted und re-charred Ex-Rotweinfässer, 66 %), ex-American whiskey barrels (31 %) und Oloroso Sherryfässern (3 %). Die auf 6.100 Flaschen limitierte Abfüllung ist mit 48,5 % Vol. abgefüllt und wird ab morgen im Handel erhältlich sein. Die UVP für das Vereinigte Königreich beträgt £88.95, was etwas über 100 € wären.

Whisky ist ein „natürliches“ Produkt, was sich in der Arbeitsweise der Destillerie widerspiegelt. Einzigartig in der Whiskyindustrie, stammt der gesamte Strom- und Wärmebedarf für die Ardnamurchan Distillery aus lokalen erneuerbaren Energien – der Fluss Glenmore, der das Kühlwasser der Destillerie liefert, speist einen Wasserkraftgenerator, und der Biomassekessel wird mit Holzhackschnitzeln aus lokaler Forstwirtschaft befeuert, was zu einer sehr guten und nachhaltigen Gesamtbilanz der Brennerei führt. Der Whisky
Die Ardnamurchan Distillery produziert zwei charakteristische Spirituosenstile, einen getorften und einen ungetorften. Eine, gemessen an der Anzahl der dortigen Destillieren, kurze Tour durch die Speyside absolviert heute Angus MacRaild, der wie gewohnt den Samstag bei Whiskyfun übernimmt. Seine Wahl fiel auf die Brennereien Dailuaine, Glenfarclas und Macallan. Für jede der Destillerien stellte er sich ein Duo/Trio für die Verkostung zusammen, ein Mix aus recht aktuellen Bottlings und Abfüllungen aus vergangenen Zeiten. Alles in allem eine Verkostung mit Hoch- und Höchstnoten:

Peter Wills von der Islay-Destillerie Kilchoman und Stephan Ehmke, Geschäftsführer der Hanseatischen Weinhandelsgesellschaft, wählten im Dunnage Warehouse der Brennerei sechs Einzelfässer aus. Es handelt sich sich, um genauer zu sein, um drei Schwesternpaare, also jeweils zwei Fässer, deren Inhalt am gleichen Tag destilliert und die am gleichen Tag befüllt wurden. Mit Freude präsentieren wir die seltensten Fässer Kilchomans, welche bisher nie veröffentlicht wurden und gehen auf die spannende Entdeckungsreise, wie sich Schwesterfässer ganz individuell entwickeln.
Six casks have been bottled for the Hanseatische 50th Anniversary series. These casks are released in pairs as ‘sister casks’, being distilled and filled into cask on the same day. They have then embarked on an individual maturation journey, taking on the unique flavours hidden within the oak of each cask before eventually being bottled on the same day at natural cask strength. Explore how these unique flavours have altered the profile of these sister casks, which have been selected by their rare character.

Zum 50. Jubiläum der Hanseatischen Weinhandelsgesellschaft wurden bei der letzten Reise nach Islay sechs außergewöhnliche und bisher nie veröffentlichte Kilchoman Fässer „Sister Casks“ ausgewählt und anlässlich des Jubiläums als „One-of-a-Kind“ Editionen veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich um eine seltene Auswahl an Single Casks aus den frühen Jahren der Destillation, von denen Kilchoman nur noch eine Handvoll an Fässern zur Verfügung hat, einschließlich der erstmaligen Oloroso-Sherry-Einzelfass-Vollfassreifungen sowie ein 100% Islay Malt mit Altersangabe, destilliert aus eigens angebauter Gerste der Farmbrennerei. Diese Single Casks wurden persönlich von Peter Wills und Stephan Ehmke im Dunnage Warehouse der Brennerei selektiert und als „Sister Casks“ veröffentlicht, was bedeutet, dass diese Fässer am gleichen Tag destilliert und in Fässer abgefüllt wurden. Nach der Füllung in die erlesenen Fässer begann die individuelle Reifezeit der „Sister Casks“. Es ist eine spannende Entdeckungsreise, wie sich Aromen bei jedem Schwesterfass individuell entfalten. Die Kilchoman Distillery liegt eingebettet zwischen den traditionellen Gebäuden der Rockside Farm auf der berühmten Whisky-Insel Islay in Schottland. Berühmt als Islay’s Farm Distillery, erstrecken sich Kilchoman’s Gerstenfelder nach Westen bis zu den Ufern der Machir Bay und dem Atlantischen Ozean. Kilchoman ist in vielerlei Hinsicht einzigartig, vor allem wegen der 100%igen Islay-Reihe, Islays einzigem Single Farm Single Malt.
Kilchoman wurde 2005 gegründet und ist dem reichen bäuerlichen Destillationserbe von Islay treu geblieben. Es wird lokal gestochener Torf verwendet, langsam von Hand destilliert, auf Islay gereift und vor Ort ohne Färbung oder Kältefiltration abgefüllt.
Diese 100% Islay Single Cask Abfüllungen sind ein Single Farm Single Malt, hergestellt aus Gerste, die in Kilchoman angebaut und gemälzt wurde. Die Fass reiften über 9 Jahre in einem frischen Bourbonfass. Die Fässer 650/2014 und 650/2014 bilden ein Schwesterpaar.
Bereits seit Montag läuft das jährliche Whisky-Festival am Flughafen Heathrow. Einen Monat lang, bis zum 14. Mai, sind an jedem Terminal Whisky-Botschafter vor Ort, die den Passagieren bei der Auswahl von Geschenken und Flaschen als Souvenir helfen. Zusätzlich sind einzelne Marken mit einem besonderen Programm am Flughafen vertreten.

Im Terminal 5 beispielsweise werden Markenbotschafter von Pernod Ricard im April und Mai kostenlose Whisky-Masterclasses anbieten. Sie geben hierbei dann die Verkostungs- und Serviertipps weiter, die von Pernod Ricard’s Master Blendern entwickelt wurden. Marken wie Fable, Wildmoor und Bushmills werden während des Festivals Exklusiv-Produkte für den Flughafen auf den Markt bringen. Und The Dalmore feiert hier die weltweite Einführung seines limitiertem Single Malts The Dalmore Luminary No 2 2024 Edition.
Auch die am Flughafen angebotenen Spesen verschiedener Bars und Restaurants sind auf das Whisky-Festival abgestimmt. Zu den exklusiven Festival-Gerichten gehören unter anderem der Pulled Pork Burger von Big Smoke Taphouse & Kitchen mit Monkey Shoulder-Glasur sowie der Räucherlachs von Caviar House & Prunier’s mit Woodford Reserve.
Im Jahr 2023 machte Whisky allein 70 % aller Spirituosenverkäufe am Flughafen Heathrow aus. Laut Flughafengesellschaft wurden durchschnittlich drei Flaschen pro Minute verkauft.
Das Thema rund um den Betrug beim Handel mit Scotch-Whisky-Fässern und eine Regulierung dieses Marktes in Schottland hat es in dieser Woche in das schottische Parlament geschafft. In seiner Rede sprach Fergus Ewing, Mitglied der Scottish National Party, vor dem schottischen Parlament über Fassbetrug und die möglichen Auswirkungen, die dieser auf die Scotch-Whisky-Industrie haben könnte. In dieser Ansprache dankte er explizit dem Whisky Consultant und Broker Blair Bowman, Vikki Bruce (Co-Founder von Casknet, wir berichteten) sowie Felipe Schrieberge und Mark Littler. Die Beiden gründeten Protect Your Cask, eine „pädagogische Anti-Scotch-Whisky-Fässer-Investitionsbetrugsseite“ (wir berichteten). Mark Littler, ebenfalls Whisky-Broker und -Consultant, ist zugleich auch editor in chief bei The Whiskey Wash. Protect Your Cask Mitbegründer Felipe Schrieberge stellt derweil das Angebot ihrer Firma auf The drinks businessdar. Er bereite sich auf einen „Autounfall“ in drei bis fünf Jahren vor, “when more and more people want to sell their casks and make their money back”. „Es wird ein Blutbad geben“, sagt er weiter, sobald die Anleger „herausfinden, dass etwas mit dem Fass nicht stimmt, dass kein Geld da ist oder dass die Firmen verschwunden sind.“
Schrieberg hat The drinks business dabei geholfen, einige der wichtigsten Warnzeichen aufzuschlüsseln, auf die bei Investitionen in Whiskyfässern beachtet werden sollten. Neben mangelnder Transparenz und überhöhten Preis sollten auch vielversprechende Kapitalrenditen ein deutliches Warnzeichen sein. Denn auch hier gilt: Wenn etwas zu schön ist, um wahr zu sein, dann ist es wohl auch nicht wahr.
