Sotheby’s versteigert einzigartigen Bowmore ARC-54: Iridos Edition

Sotheby’s to Offer Bowmore ARC-54: The ‘Iridos Edition’, A Unique Decanter Designed by Aston Martin Featuring an Equally Unique 54-Year-Old Whisky from the Bowmore Distillery

This spring, Sotheby’s will present at auction Bowmore ARC-54: Iridos Edition, a unique decanter designed by Aston Martin housing an equally unique 54-Year-Old whisky from Bowmore Distillery on Islay, Scotland. The offering marks Sotheby’s latest partnership with Bowmore following the sale of the Iridos Edition’s predecessor – the one-of-a-kind Bowmore ARC-52 Mokume Edition – in 2023.

Crafted from some of Bowmore’s oldest vintages from the 1960s by Calum Fraser, Chief Blender, the bespoke single malt was drawn from two cask types: a 1967 European oak butt, a 1968 Sherry butt and a 1968 American oak hogshead. The mid to late 1960s at Bowmore is considered a golden era, a period during which the famed Black Bowmore was distilled. The vintages produced have gone on to become highly sought after by collectors.

Bowmore ARC-54 Iridos Edition will be offered by Sotheby’s London in an online auction of Finest Whisky, open for bidding from 15 to 29 May, with an estimate of £140,000-220,000 ($180,000-300,000). Proceeds from the auction will benefit the communities which support Suntory Global Spirit’s distilleries in Scotland.  This follows on from the donation of the proceeds from the auction of Bowmore ARC-52 Mokume Edition to the Islay community.

This one-off release calls on the world of automotive engineering from Aston Martin Valkyrie for its distinctly complex design. The striking shape of the handblown decanter takes inspiration from the F1-inspired aerodynamic exterior of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar, as well as the full-length venturi tunnels that contribute to in the region of 1,100 kg of downforce, and the natural fluid forms of the terroir of Islay.

Taking its name from the Latin origin of the word combining ‘rainbow’ and ‘iridescent’, the titanium top of the decanter has been created using the same process applied to the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s exhaust system. Milled from a single billet of titanium which, like the exhaust of the Valkyrie, was then subjected to extreme changes in temperature, both hot and cold, to create a unique iridescent bluing patternation on the metal. The finish achieved is visually and technically stunning, with multi-layered facets of colours emerging from every angle.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Global Head of Whisky & Spirits, said:

“This marks the second partnership between Sotheby’s and Bowmore to offer at auction a completely unique version of their Aston Martin ARC collaboration. The ARC-54 Iridos not only features its distinctive iridescent lid, complimenting the aerodynamic Aston Martin design, but within the bottle itself is an individual whisky so rare that only one bottle has been made available for sale. In the last few years, Bowmore have consistently achieved the highest results for unique bottles combining age, rarity, vintage specificity and stunning design, so it’s a special moment for us to be entrusted once again with their latest creation.”

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer comments:

“This remarkable one-off creation is testament to the cutting edge, technology-based collaboration between two exceptional brands that are steeped in heritage and tradition. ARC-54 Iridos embodies the innovative thinking that we apply to Valkyrie and Valhalla, our mid-engined sports cars.  Both of these cars push the boundaries of technology through materials, aerodynamics and performance.  In creating the ARC-54 decanter, similar principles of materiality and fluid dynamics are employed, replacing air flow for liquid movement to create a uniquely formed shape generated by the pure movement of Bowmore whisky. A truly creative collaboration.”

Calum Fraser, Chief Blender at Bowmore, said:

“This is a whisky which tells a rich and captivating story, beginning in the definitive era of Bowmore and taking shape over more than half a century. In bringing together some of our oldest and rarest whiskies, we showcase not only the infinite layers of flavour achievable in Bowmore but the sheer excellence of just how our spirit excels in cask over time. The intensity of the tropical fruits together with indulgently rich sweetness is truly enticing and makes for the most intriguing and inspired partner for this incredible decanter.”

House of Hazelwood bringt 60 Jahre alten Grain Whisky – will 100 Jahre alten Grain veröffentlichen (mit Video + Galerie)

Die Serie heißt bezeichnenderweise „One For The Next“.

HOUSE OF HAZELWOOD SETS OUT AMBITION TO CREATE THE WORLD’S FIRST 100-YEAR-OLD SINGLE GRAIN WHISKY

House of Hazelwood is today unveiling a new grain whisky series, which is intended to culminate in the World’s first ever 100-Year-Old Single Grain Whisky. It is hoped to be amongst the oldest grain whisky of its kind, matured in casks dating back to the very first full year of production at Girvan distillery under the watchful eye of industry pioneer, Charles Gordon.

The new collectable five bottle series will be launched with the introduction of an exceptional 60-Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky to mark Girvan Distillery’s 60th Anniversary. The ambition is to release further releases every decade through until 2065 to create a set of five whiskies aged 60YO, 70YO, 80YO, 90YO & 100YO. Aptly named One For The Next – this rare grain whisky collection celebrates the Gordon family’s long tradition of laying down stocks for future generations to enjoy and is designed to be shared as a family heirloom and enjoyed through the generations.

Several casks filled at the Girvan grain distillery in 1964 – each tracing their roots back to Charles Gordon – will be combined for this remarkable project. From this vatting just 25 bottles of the 60-Year-Old whisky will be filled. The remainder of the 60-Year-Old blend will be filled into custom made European oak hogsheads commissioned by Charles Gordon’s niece Kirsten Grant Meikle and designed specifically to support long-term maturation into the distant future.

The Gordons built much of their success on the creation of Girvan Distillery, so it should come as no surprise that Charles Gordon and others saw fit to lay down favoured casks of exceptional grain whisky for their own private collection. These casks, destined to lay for decades at a time and intended for personal consumption would eventually form part of the House of Hazelwood collection as it is today.

Commenting on One For The Next, Kirsten Grant Meikle, said:

“To be part of our family is to have whisky in your DNA and it’s an honour to be carrying on the family tradition of laying down whiskies for the next generation, of innovating and of course, to be working with grain whisky first laid down by my uncle himself makes this extra special.

“Our family has been doing this forever – laying whisky down, protecting it, nurturing it in the full knowledge that it’s not something that we will personally enjoy – it’s for those that come next. This is our family story, and it always has been. And for whoever gets to open and enjoy these bottles in the future it truly is an incredible opportunity to witness and taste the evolution of a grain whisky through the decades.”

Just 25 bottles of the 60-Year-Old-Single Grain Scotch Whisky will be released, forming the first part of the series of five collectable whiskies.  Those who have bought the 60-Year-Old whisky will be granted first refusal of the opportunity to purchase future bottles released in the series. For those buying the collection it will come displayed in a custom-built display cabinet, crafted from wood harvested directly from the garden of Hazelwood House, the Gordon family’s Speyside home.

Commenting on One For The Next, House of Hazelwood Director, Jonathan Gibson, said:

“In recent years, there has been a trend towards speculation in the Scotch market – with some investors looking to buy hard to find bottles and sell them quickly for financial gain. We’re fortunate that those who buy House of Hazelwood releases typically buy for different reasons – understanding greatly aged Scotch whisky for everything it represents; liquid character, the story behind the flavour and the time and care that has gone into its creation. This is something for them – an opportunity to become a part of this whisky’s story and to build on the pioneering work of Charles Gordon himself. The ambition to take this whisky through to 100 is also a fascinating technical challenge and for those who join us on the journey it will certainly be a rewarding one.”

Purchasers of One For The Next will be invited to a private microsite which will keep them informed about the Collection including annual updates on how the whisky is maturing. They will be given a certificate of ownership, invitations to private owner’s events, samples and details on how ownership can be transferred to future generations.

One For The Next is available exclusively to order from House of Hazelwood and WG&S Distillers Libraries priced at RRSP £10,000.

The 60-Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky, 25 bottles worldwide, RRSP £10,000

Tasting Notes

Already a piece of Scottish distilling history, this 60-year-old Single Grain from the first full year of production at Girvan is a showcase for the delicate complexity that only a greatly aged grain whisky can bring.  An initial barley sugar sweetness on the nose progresses to currants, candied fruit and toasted almonds that recall traditional celebration cakes. On the palate there is a light vibrancy with a pleasing citrus tang and the satisfying ‘bite’ of green Granny Smith apples. Perfectly poised, sweet yet delicate – a joy to drink and a treasure to preserve.

Ohne Schnickschnack, ohne Luxuspreise. Einfach guter Trinkwhisky!

Selten, frisch, faszinierend: GLENLOSSIE trifft Fino Sherry

TILOS’S PROOF – Batch #4: Glenlossie

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

10 Jahre alt (2015/2025) • 50,5 % ABV Batch Strength

Finished for 6 months in two 1st Fill Fino Sherry Quarter Casks

Inchadairnie Distillery, Glenrothes, Fife.

“The formation of InchDairnie Whisky Limited is the natural next step in our journey. We believe that working as one business, with one team and one clear vision, sets us up for long-term success across all areas of our operation. While the MacDuff name will be retired from active use, it will forever remain a proud part of the group’s legacy that we look forward to building upon in this next chapter.
“Islay Mist, Lauder’s and Waterproof, together with RyeLaw and KinGlassie, with more InchDairnie brands launching over the next four years, makes for an amazing portfolio of whisky brands to excite the whisky enthusiast.”

Graham Glen, Commerical Managing Director

“This is more than just a name change. It’s a statement – about who we are, how we work together, and what we want to achieve as a modern, ambitious whisky business. It comes at an exciting time for the business too, as we plan to launch our inaugural single malt signature bottling, KinGlassie.”

Scott Sneddon, Distilling Managing Director

Ian Palmer bleibt übrigens als Chairman of the Board dem neu formierten Unternehmen erhalten.

“We’re always exploring new cask finishes to push the boundaries of flavour. These limited-edition maple syrup casks are a bold example — the maple influence is immediate and unmistakable: rich, syrupy sweetness that adds depth and indulgence, while still allowing the Glen Moray character to shine through.

“The unpeated spirit brings out those classic dessert-like notes — fudge, toasted nuts, soft spice — while the peated version is a different experience altogether. The smoke and syrup play off each other nicely, creating a bold and layered dram that’s both sweet and savoury. We love surprising people at Spirit of Speyside—these playful, flavour-packed bottlings show our curiosity as distillers and prove that even after 125 years, we’re still finding new ways to bring flavour to life.”

Fresh Winds, Red Fruits & Wild Hearts

THE CASKHOUND: AROS

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

12 Jahre alt (01.03.2013 – 03.03.2025) • 45,3 % ABV Natural Cask Strength

Matured in an Ex-Bourbon Barrel + Finished for 1.396 days in a First Fill Tawny Port Barrique

Auflage 245 Flaschen (0,5 l) • UVP: 54,90 Euro

Alles schön eingebettet in weinige, nussige Noten.

Bleiben Sie gespannt – schon bald erwarten Sie weitere spannende Abfüllungen von THE CASKHOUND.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT CASK WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS

Saltire Rare Malt’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky releases are ‘never rushed or hurried – they’re bottled when the right time arrives’. This is where they put their trust in whisky industry icons Hans & Becky Offringa – ‘The Whisky Couple’ – who are a trusted part of the Saltire family.

Hans & Becky Offringa are well-respected judges at the Scottish Whisky Awards and the World Whiskies Awards, with over 50 years experience between them. Their incomparable guidance and advice is crucial to selecting the perfect cask for every Saltire Rare Malt release. If curators Hans & Becky disapprove of a sample, the cask will not be bottled.

Commenting on their worldwide success, Saltire Rare Malt Founder & Director Keith Rennie said;

“When we started Saltire we always had a dream for it to be a worldwide success. What we didn’t realise is how fast we would achieve global acclaim. To see the reaction and excitement for Saltire Rare Malt from our partners across the world is why we work in this industry. It really is a special time for Saltire Rare Malt right now.

Introducing three exceptional new whiskies to our Core Range

After a huge amount of planning, and a good bit of fun with artist Emily Chappell to bring our label ideas to life, we’re very excited to unveil three exciting new expressions to join our core range.

Three new World Whiskeys, or /Whiskies; from the ‘native spirit’ of the United States, to the finesse of Irish aging and blending, and the innovation of English distillation and maturation. These whiskies bring unique character and complexity to our collection, alongside some new characters on the labels.

As with the current core range, each has been bottled at 45.8% abv, are natural colour, non-chill filtered, and embody the character we stand for. They also look fricking cool all lined up together, with their bright colours and bold category statements.

Our Core Range of Boutique-y Whisky now consists of four Scotch Whiskies, four World Whiskies, and the iconic World Whisky Blend. We’ve always believed there’s a whisky for everyone, so why not explore their unique profiles and discover a new favorite in our core collection!

8-Year-Old English Rye Whisky

700ml 45.8% abv rrp £44.95

TBWC bottled their first English whisky in April 2016. At that time there were only a handful of English distilleries making whisky, and even less with mature stock to release a 5 year old whisky.

The English whisky scene is buoyant, with some 45 distilleries making whisky today, and there’s even a growing English Whisky Festival that had thirty exhibitors at the 2024 show in Birmingham.

This is a bold and expressive English rye with a hint of Islay peat, and an 8 year old age statement. The backbone of this whisky is distilled from a high-rye mash bill and aged for eight years in toasted French oak casks, to which we’ve blended some English single malt that has spent some time in an ex-Islay cask. Expect spicy notes of cracked black pepper and cinnamon, balanced with rich caramel, toasted almonds, and a hint of orchard fruit. A long, warming finish with subtle oak sweetness completes this distinctive dram.

Our label features the English Longhorn Cattle, and an ancient, and magnificent breed that is said to originate in northern England. They have long curved horns that generally sweep down to the nose as they age. This youngster’s horns are still growing out straight at the moment, and if there was a flag on the end of each ear, it could be seen as semaphore, for R.

R for rye, perhaps? Shockingly bad punnage…

The livery for in English mustard yellow, and bright red, Coleman’s Mustardesque perhaps? (other English mustards are available).

10-Year-Old Bourbon Whiskey

700ml 45.8% abv rrp £59.95

The first non-Scotch whisky TBWC ever bottled was a Bourbon, so it’s only fitting that a Bourbon join our core range ranks.

Bourbon County, in Kentucky was established in 1785, but how, and when American whiskey made in Kentucky came to be called Bourbon is pretty sketchy. The first advertisement for Bourbon was printed in the Western Citizen newspaper in 1821, and it wasn’t until 1823 that the ‘sour mash’ was developed. Although bourbon whiskey had been distilled in the Old Bourbon County area for decades, it was not until 1840 that it officially became known as Bourbon. Prior to this, it was often labeled „Bourbon County Whiskey“ or „Old Bourbon County Whiskey.“ On May 4th, 1964, Bourbon was declared as „America’s Native Spirit“ and the country’s official distilled spirit by an Act of Congress. The current regulations defining what can be called bourbon whiskey were established too.

Our 10 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a true reflection of Kentucky tradition, distilled from a classic corn-forward mash bill (77% corn) and aged in deeply charred American oak barrels. Layers of vanilla, dark toffee, and toasted pecans are complemented by warm baking spices and a touch of leather, leading to a velvety, well-rounded finish.

Our label of course features the North American Bison, the largest land mammal in North America. Prior to European settlement, millions of bison ranged more widely across the landscape than any other native large herbivore. No other wildlife species has had as much impact on humans and the ecosystems that they occupied than bison. The livery for our label is white, with a rather magnificent bison, he’s even got a rosette, that’s just how magnificent we thought he was. If you look closely, there’s a herd stampeding through a maize field behind him too. Well they were there first!

21-Year-Old Irish Whiskey

700ml 45.8% abv rrp £99.95

Irish Whiskey, once the world’s choice, was almost lost to history in the 1970s. There were just two distilleries making whiskey in Ireland by the end of the 1970s, and it wasn’t until 1987 that a new independent Irish Whiskey distillery was founded. Thankfully the industry has survived, and thrives today with over 50 operating distilleries, a significant increase from the four that existed in 2010!

Nobody really knows the origins of distilling in Ireland, but there is a long history that runs parallel with Scotch Whisky. The oldest known written record of whiskey is 1405, from the Irish Annals of Clonmacnoise, where it was written that the head of a clan died after „taking a surfeit of aqua vitae“ at Christmas.

The making of whiskey flourished in Ireland during the reign of Elizabeth I, who apparently was rather fond of it. For centuries Ireland maintained its supremacy, only yielding to Scotland at the end of the 19th century. Throughout much of the 19th century, the whiskey powerhouse was undoubtedly Dublin, whose half-dozen distilleries had a production capacity of nearly 10 million gallons per annum, and in some years accounted for up to one gallon in seven of all the whiskey distilled in the British Isles.

This is an extraordinary Irish Whiskey, aged to perfection over 21 years in a delightful marriage of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. It delivers an elegant symphony of honeyed malt, dried fruits, and toasted oak, with undertones of dark chocolate, fig, and baking spices.
