60 Jahre lang im Dienst der Whiskyindustrie – das ist einzigartig in der gesamten Branche, und wahrscheinlich einzigartig auch in der Geschichte des schottischen Whiskys. Dieses besondere Jubiläum feiert The Balvenie mit seinem Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, dem erst fünften Maltmaster seit der Gründung der Marke 1892.

One of the world’s most handcrafted whiskies celebrates the longest serving Malt Master in whisky industry history

22nd August 2022: The Balvenie, one of the world’s most handcrafted whiskies, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Master Blender and Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, the longest serving Malt Master in industry history (and fifth only for the brand since its inception in 1892).

For 60 years, David has developed incomparable knowledge and skills which have seen him produce award winning whiskies and developed new whisky making techniques, which have been adopted industry wide to critical acclaim.

David has been celebrated and awarded many accolades including International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) recognition for Outstanding Achievement in the Scotch Whisky Industry, the Icon of Whisky Award by Whisky Magazine in 2009 and IWSC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005; also receiving ISC Distiller of the Year, Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold and Gold Outstanding year after year at the IWSC awards for his The Balvenie expressions.

A further testament to David’s commitment to the Scottish whisky industry, the whisky legend was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of The British Empire (MBE) and presented with the MBE medal on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen in 2016 for services to the Scotch whisky industry.

Born in Ayr, Scotland in 1945, David began his journey at family-owned, independent distillers William Grant & Sons in 1962 as a whisky stocks clerk, writing ledgers and managing invoices. He then embarked on a 12-year journey to become the master blender in 1974, personally overseeing the distiller’s award-winning range of single malts and blends from globally recognised brands The Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Grants during his time.

As a Malt Master, David oversees the creation of all whiskies for The Balvenie and uses his thoroughly trained nose to maintain the consistency of the whisky’s produced by the distillery. David also oversees the new Malt Masters from William Grant & Sons, having worked closely with Glenfiddich’s Malt Master Brian Kinsman and now The Balvenie’s Apprentice Malt Master, Kelsey McKechnie.

David Stewart commented:

“The Balvenie holds a special place in my heart, and I am proud to have spent the better half of my life working at the distillery. Whisky making is what I am passionate about, and I feel honoured to have been given the reigns to create and experiment over the past 60 years. I enjoy passing my knowledge and stories onto Kelsey to continue building the legacy that makes The Balvenie what it is.”

The Balvenie Apprentice Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie commented: “I feel extremely privileged to have learned from David over the past five years as I undergo my apprenticeship with The Balvenie. David is an incredibly knowledgeable and patient man, and a living whisky legend.’‘

The Glasgow Distillery has released two limited edition expressions of its Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Whisky as part of a new ‘Small Batch Series’.

The two new releases – an unpeated expression finished in tequila casks and a peated whisky finished in cognac casks – are the first bottlings in the new collection of single malts, which aims to showcase the distillery’s collaborative approach to distilling and experimentation with a wide range of casks.

The Tequila Cask Finish and Cognac Cask Finish have been co-created by the whisky team at The Glasgow Distillery, in a project led by Co-Founder Mike Hayward.

Mike Hayward said:

“The Small Batch Series is a premium range of whiskies we’re looking to introduce to the global marketplace.

“It will be an ongoing series of hand selected batched releases of single malts which will give our customers insight into the cask trials we run at the distillery and into the great whiskies we’re trying every day.

“The Cognac Cask Finish and Tequila Cask Finish are just the beginning of what will be an experimental range that reflect our ethos of exploration and innovation.”

Priced at £59 GBP inc. VAT, the limited-edition bottles will be available from the distillery website and at a selection of specialist retailers for UK customers from Tuesday the 23rd of August. Both expressions will be available in Germany, with the Cognac Cask Finish available for whisky fans in the Netherlands and South Korea.

The Cognac Cask Finish encompasses the distillery’s signature peated style of malt whisky, filled in 2018 into virgin American oak casks before a finishing period of over 12 months in premium French cognac casks. The combination of two casks gave an outturn of 882 70cl bottles, bottled at 56% ABV and offers notes of smoky BBQ sauce, dark fruits and earthy spice.

The Tequila Cask Finish is a single cask release of the distillery’s unpeated single malt, filled in 2018 into a first fill ex-bourbon cask before a finishing period of over 12 months in anex-tequila cask. The resulting 295 70cl bottles are described as tasting of rich honey, fresh apples, pears and tropical fruits and have been bottled at 55% ABV.

Known for its distinctive, industrial influenced bottle design, The Glasgow Distillery has chosen vibrant, brighter colourways for the limited edition releases – reflecting the distinctiveness of the flavour profiles within.

Demonstrating the collaboration that lies at the heart of The Glasgow Distillery’s craft and that has been influential in the creation of this new Small Batch Series, each bottle features the signature of the member of the whisky making team that has led on each particular project, showcasing The Glasgow Distillery’s non-traditional approach to the ‘master blender’ role, instead opting to collaborate on the whisky creation process as a team.

The new limited editions follow on from the brands decision to move its Signature Range from 50cl bottles to 70cl, at no extra cost for the consumer as Glasgow 1770 increases its global presence.

Auch Australien kann Tawny: Starward Project mit starkem Finish

Der Bundesstaat Victoria beherbergt 95 Prozent der australischen Weinproduktion. Und: die Starward Distillery. In der Hauptstadt Victorias, der Genussmetropole Melbourne, gelegen, bringt die 2008 gegründete Brennerei Wein und Whisky zusammen. Ihre Single Malt Australian Whiskys reifen ausschließlich in Rotwein- und Apera-Fässern (dem australischen Sherry) aus der Region. Ausnahmen macht Starward nur für seine „Project Series“, in der die Experimentierfreunde ihrem Whisky durch Fass-Finishes neue Dimensionen verleihen.
 
Neuestes Beispiel: der Starward Tawny Cask. (Exklusiv für den europäischen Markt abgefüllt und nicht mit Starwards Tawny zu verwechseln!) Der Single Malt wurde in australischen Tawny Barrels aus dem McLaren Vale veredelt – eine Verneigung an die Spirituosenvergangenheit des Kontinents, auf dem bis in die 1960er Jahre hinein vor allem Starkweine produziert wurden. Wie ihre portugiesischen Verwandten, reifen australische Tawnys oft Jahrzehnte in Eichenfässern. Der Effekt: üppigste Toffee-, Feigen- und Rosinennoten. Perfekt ausbalanciert werden diese durch die saftigen Noten roter Früchte und Gewürze aus Starwards charakteristischer Rotweinreifung. Als Teil der „Project Series“, ist Starward Tawny Cask ein limitiert verfügbares Vergnügen.

2022 findet der Schwäbische Whisky Tag in Tübingen wieder als Marktgeschehen statt

[Tübingen] am Samstag, den 1. Oktober 2022 findet der Schwäbische Whisky Tag, wie er vor der Corona Pandemie schon zur Tradition geworden war, wieder als Markt in der Tübinger Altstadt statt.

Mit dem Fokus auf regionale Whisky-Brennereien und um das „flüssige Gold“, das dort produziert wird, findet dieses einzigartige regionale Whisky-Event seit 2010 integriert in den Tübinger Herbst- Regionalmarkt statt.

Auf dem schönen Platz neben der „Alten Aula“ hinter der Stiftskirche trifft der interessierte Besucher heuer von 12- 18 Uhr auf 15 schwäbische Whisky-Brenner ˮzum Anfassenˮ die hier ihre oftmals hochprämierten Whiskys und auch neue Abfüllungen präsentieren.

Kulinarische Leckereien und Craft Beer – ebenfalls produziert aus dem Whisky-Rohstoff Getreide – runden das Angebot auf dem Schwäbischen Whisky Tag ab.

Holzofenspezialitäten von der Schwäbischen Alb in Form von vegetarischen oder herzhaften Dinnele, Holzofen Pizza, Wurst im Brotteig oder Holzofen Burger sorgen direkt auf dem Whiskytag Gelände für‘s leibliche Wohl und Grundlage für die Whisky Verkostungen. Des Weiteren gibt es einen Craft-Beer Bereich mit handwerklich gebrautem Doc’s Bier aus Rottenburg.

Begleitend zum Schwäbischen Whisky Tag bietet der Tübinger Whisky-Brenner Volker Theurer in seinem Gasthof Lamm in Tübingen-Unterjesingen auch ein abendliches Whisky-Menü und ein Wochenend- Pauschalangebot für Besucher an.

Beim Schwäbischen-Whisky-Tag 2022 sind 15 Whisky-Destillerien anwesend. Gemeinsam mit dem Veranstalter, dem Tübinger Spezialitätengeschäft ˮSilberburg am Marktˮ und der Schwäbischen Whisky Botschafterin Angela V. Weis liefern die Brenner Informationen zur Whisky-Produktion und führen in die hohe Kunst der ˮWhiskysophieˮ ein.

Zum ersten Mal beim Schwäbischen Whisky Tag in Tübingen mit dabei ist dieses Jahr die Destillerie Betz aus Waldstetten bei Schwäbisch Gmünd mit diversen Whisky Abfüllungen. Überdies wird die Brennerei Zaiser aus Köngen nun endlich ihren „Single Malt Sherry Cask“ beim Schwäbischen Whiskytag 2022 präsentieren können, durch die Corona Pause habe dieser Whisky nun noch einige Zeit zum reifen hinzu bekommen, was jedoch „keinesfalls ein Nachteil war“, so der Brenner Markus Zaiser.

Verkostungs-Tickets können an der zentralen Kasse erworben werden – der Eintritt zur Veranstaltung ist frei.

Yma o Hyd: Penderyn’s Sporting Salute in the Shape of a World Cup Whisky

Wales’ triumphant qualification for the 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar has brought excitement level to fever pitch across the country.

It’s the national side’s first World Cup finals campaign since 1958, and the Red Wall is growing ever-confident. In honour of the side’s incredible achievements thus far, iconic Welsh whisky giant Penderyn has partnered with Welsh football to release a unique single malt whisky – Yma o Hyd, the official whisky of the Welsh 2022 World Cup campaign.

“64 years is a long time – it’s more than a generation,” says Penderyn CEO Stephen Davies. “It’s going to be an exciting winter for Wales, and it’s only fitting we pay tribute to the incredible work the national side has put in to get this far. Fingers crossed, they’ll take it all the way – we’re behind them!”

Yma o Hyd is the Red Wall’s anthem – poetic, stirring, and boasting an infectious chorus, Penderyn has named its limited-edition single malt in honour of the enduring spirit of Welsh football – and how it continues to unite people. The song’s been a staple in national grounds and at international matches since the 1980s, having been penned by folk legend Dafydd Iwan.

“We’ve produced a strong, stirring bottling that really reflects the mood and sense of resilience portrayed through Dafydd Iwan’s song,” says Davies. “This is a song that speaks of the dark times Wales has gone through – and yet, we are all still standing, speaking our language, singing our song, and that we’ll live on no matter what happens.”

“I think that’s hugely apt as a football anthem – and it’s certainly inspired us to mark the occasion. Watching our men head to the finals for the first time in decades is, for a lot of us, a maiden voyage – and it could well be a crowning moment for Wales.”

“The chorus is infectious – ‘Ry’n ni yma o hyd, er gwaetha pawb a phopeth, ry’n ni yma o hyd’. ‘We are still here – in spite of everyone, and everything – we are still here’. It’s an anthem that speaks volumes about the last few years we’ve all been through, as well as Wales’ remarkable campaign so far. It’s worth celebrating, and we know our customers will feel the same.”

“The excitement amongst the team and The Red Wall is already at high levels, as we continue to move closer to the World Cup. With the launch of this special edition whisky, which not only recognises the team’s achievements so far but also recognises the vital role Wales supporters play in the success of our national team, it’s clear to see the support the team have going into this World Cup” explained Ian Davis, Chief Commercial and Engagement Officer, Football Association of Wales.

Penderyn’s Yma o Hyd is a single malt that provides a floral, heady scent that suggests notes of caramels and toffees, with hints of pear and apple. It boasts a sweet, caramel finish that’s peppery on the swallow – and its smooth, fruity palate adds an intriguing, spicy kick.

Whisky fans will be able to purchase the first bottles of this official World Cup bottling by the end of August, three months ahead of international action kicking off in Qatar on 20th November. A winter World Cup is an entirely new phenomenon – with Welsh fans gearing up to cosy down and watch the Dragons with a warming glass of Penderyn Yma o Hyd.

Davies and the team at Penderyn are immensely proud of their heritage and humble beginnings, with their maiden distillery having expanded into a new Llandudno site in 2021, and with a third location opening up by 2023. The brand has made waves in the whisky industry not only thanks to its continued international awards success, but also through its appealing ‘Icons of Wales’ line – a series of limited single malts paying tribute to heroes and moments of Welsh history worth remembering.

“It’s important we show our passion for our homeland on the international stage,” says Davies. “We’re in a perfect position to share Welsh legend and heritage through our whiskies – and while our bottlings travel far, our hearts remain homebound. It’s also why we want to support our national side at the World Cup this year – it’s an incredible chance for the Dragons to show the world what we can do.”

“Yma o Hyd represents so much about the Welsh spirit – and while you can’t contain it all in one bottle alone, Penderyn intends to continue raising the flag all over the world. And, it’s true what Dafydd Iwan says – we will weather storms and bad times – no matter what life may bring, Wales is still here, still going strong, and we’ll continue to put our heritage on the map.”

Macallan und Bentley bringen 2023 gemeinsam neuen Whisky heraus – Macallan Horizon (mit Video)

Leser mit gutem Gedächtnis werden sich vielleicht erinnern, dass wir bereits im Juli 2021 über eine beginnende Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Destillerie Macallan und dem Autobauer Bentley berichtet haben. Die Partnerschaft sollte vor allem dem gemeinsamen schnelleren Erreichen der CO2-Neutralität dienen, aber es wurden auch Produkte aus dieser Zusammenarbeit versprochen.

Der Macallan Horizon soll eines dieser Produkte werden, ein Whisky, der im Sommer 2023 erscheinen wird, und zu dem es ein Konzeptvideo auf Youtube gibt:

Das, was Sie auf dem Titelbild sehen, ist die querliegende Flasche des Macallan Horizon, und dass es ein wirklich außergewöhnliches Design wird, zeigt das Video von Bentley sehr gut.

Als Materialien werden recycliertes Holz, CO2-neutrales, regionales Leder, Kupfer aus den dekommissionierten Macallan Brennblasen, recyclebares Glas und recycletes Aluminium von Bentley verwendet, der Whisky, über den es noch nichts Genaues zu vernehmen gibt, ist von The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell ausgesucht und wird tatsächlich liegend gelagert – die Flasche hat keine senkrechte Stellfläche.

Wir kennen jetzt also einige Details zur Flasche, über den Inhalt verspricht man uns später Auskunft, ebenso wie zu Verfügbarkeit und Preis. Anzunehmen ist, dass er sich in Regionen bewegen wird, die für Bentley-Fahrer eher bekanntes Terrain sind als für den durchschnittlichen Whiskyfreund…

A unique concept where purpose meets innovation, craftsmanship and creativity

— The Macallan, together with its luxury automotive partner Bentley Motors, has revealed the remarkable vision and design of The Macallan Horizon, the inspirational and highly innovative limited edition single malt whisky in development by the brands.

The prototype of The Macallan Horizon, which will be available as a whisky product from summer 2023, fuses both traditional craftsmanship and innovative materials, with cutting edge technology to create an exclusive horizontal design. It was visualized following extensive collaboration between The Macallan and Bentley Motors.

In homage to The Macallan’s acclaimed Six Pillars, the foundation stones of the brand that  account for its distinctive single malt whiskies, The Macallan Horizon concept product incorporates six unique upcycled, repurposed or ethically sourced materials which are integral to  The Macallan and Bentley Motors.

Among them are recycled copper from the disused curiously small spirit stills which were located  within The Macallan’s former Distillery; aluminum recovered from the Bentley Motors  manufacturing process; recycled wood; recyclable glass and carbon neutral leather, locally  sourced, and also used in the recently unveiled Bentley Mulliner grand tourer.

The final component is the very special single malt whisky being created for The Macallan Horizon. The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell developed the flavor profile for the whisky following a visit to Bentley Motors in Crewe, where she observed first hand their shared passion for creativity, craftsmanship and innovation.

Together, the six key materials, the majority of which have been sourced and produced locally in Scotland and the UK, form a unique concept that defies the traditional vertical aesthetic of a whisky bottle and reflects the horizontal trajectory of the automotive world, pushing the boundaries and the art of the possible.

The visionary design also features a glass bottle with an extraordinary 180-degree twist,  representing the mastery of space and time achieved by The Macallan and Bentley Motors in  creating the prototype, which has no standing base.

Fassprogramm der Uilebheist Distillery in Inverness startet – 100 Fässer im Verkauf (jetzt mit PR)

Die Uilebheist Distillery ist die erste Brennerei, die in Inverness seit 130 Jahren entsteht (unsere Vorstellung der Brennerei aus dem Juni finden Sie hier) – und um die Anlauffinanzierung zu unterstützen, legt man dort jetzt ein Fasskaufprogramm über 100 Fässer auf, ca. die Hälfte der geplanten Jahresproduktion von 200 bis 250 Fässern.

Das Programm enthält zwei verschiedene Fassgrößen: First Fill ex-Bourbon (200l) für 6.000 Pfund und First Fill ex-Sherry (250 Liter Hogshead) für 7.500 Pfund. Die Fässer werden mit Spirit, der mit Hilfe einer mit Brewers‘ Ale Hefe vergorenen Mash gebrannt wurde.

Im Fasspreis enthalten sind 10 Jahre Lagerung und die Versicherung vom Fülldatum weg. Man kann sich, sollte man wie von der Brennerei empfohlen mit 46% vol. abfüllen, ca. 280 Flaschen aus dem ex-Bourbonfass erwarten, und ca. 360 Flaschen aus dem ex-Hogshead.

Zum Fasspreis kommen dann noch die Kosten der Abfüllung, die Transportkosten fürs Fass sowie Zoll bei der Ausfuhr und 20% Mehrwertsteuer dazu, was den Preis von 7.500 Pfund auf ca. 14.000 Pfund erhöhen würde.

NEW INVERNESS DISTILLERY ROLLS OUT RARE CASK PROGRAMME

The first distillery to be built in the city of Inverness for 130 years is offering the public the opportunity to own a cask of whisky produced in its very first year of operating. Uilebheist Distillery has released 100 numbered casks as part of its programme.

Ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks are available to purchase with a minimum maturation period of ten years, with cask owners having the opportunity to visit and sample their cask during its maturation. Just 200-250 casks will be produced each year, making the whisky one of the rarest in the country.

Uilebheist (phonetic spelling EWL-uh-vehst) is named after the Scots’ Gaelic word for ‘monster’. The new £6 million whisky distillery and brewery will be sustainably powered by the water from the nearby River Ness and create around 40 jobs in the Highland capital.

Much of the power used by the distillery and brewery will be generated by its own specially built on-site energy centre, with any additional power going back into the grid, making it one of the most sustainable producers in Scotland and saving an estimated 250 tonnes of carbon each year.

Master Distiller, Bruce Smith said:

“Our cask program is an opportunity for whisky lovers to join us at the very beginning of our whisky journey with spirit produced in the heart of Inverness, right on the banks of the river. We see this as an opportunity for people from near and far to own a piece of local whisky history, with Uilebheist being the first distillery to operate in the region of Inverness for 40 years, and the first to be built in the city for 130 years.”

“Uilebheist will be a Highland Single Malt like no other, because of our fresh and innovative approach to whisky making that leaves almost no carbon footprint, whilst maintaining the traditional principles that have been used in Scotland for hundreds of years.

“The wash will be fermented with our own brewer’s ale yeast for a unique character, and distilled in bespoke pot stills from Kasper Schultz in Germany. They’re producing a taller still, designed to give us unprecedented control over our new make spirit. Being a small batch craft distiller, every step of the process will be meticulously managed to ensure every drop of Uilebheist Single Malt is worth the wait.

“The interest at this early stage in our casks has been astounding and with only 100 casks available we anticipate high demand.”

The distillery is on track to be one of the lowest carbon distilleries in the country. Onsite heat pumps within the adjoined sustainability centre which are powered by the water from the River Ness will provide heating and hot water which is also distributed throughout the Glen Mhor Hotel complex. The process will be the first of its kind in Scotland and further development stages are planned which will see significant expansions to the site.

Mit weiten weißen Sandstränden und kristallklarem Meer, alten Wäldern und Bergen, ganz zu schweigen von der Tierwelt, der atemberaubenden Landschaft und den keltischen Legenden, wird ein Besuch in diesem malerischsten Land Schottlands unvergesslich sein.

Grüne & nachhaltige Prinzipien

Whisky ist ein „natürliches“ Produkt, was sich in der Arbeitsweise der Destillerie widerspiegelt.
Einzigartig in der Whiskyindustrie, stammt der gesamte Strom- und Wärmebedarf für die Ardnamurchan Distillery aus lokalen erneuerbaren Energien – der Fluss Glenmore, der das Kühlwasser der Destillerie liefert, speist einen Wasserkraftgenerator, und der Biomassekessel wird mit Holzhackschnitzeln aus lokaler Forstwirtschaft befeuert, was zu einer sehr guten und nachhaltigen Gesamtbilanz der Brennerei führt.
Darüber hinaus werden die Nebenprodukte der Whiskyherstellung auf der Halbinsel recycelt – der noch energiereiche Treber (das sind die Überreste aus dem Maischbottich) wird mit dem Pot Ale kombiniert, um Tierfutter für die Verwendung auf der Halbinsel herzustellen.

Blockchain Technology

Jede einzelne fertige Flasche Whisky liefert Whiskyfreunden durch die Verwendung von QR-Barcodes und anderen smartphone-fähigen Scan-Technologien individuelle Daten zu jeder Abfüllung. Auf diese Weise kann die Geschichte jeder Whiskyflasche direkt erzählt werden, da jeder Schritt des Herstellungsprozesses dank der Blockchain Technology bis zum Ursprung nachvollziehbar ist.
Diese Technology ermöglicht nicht nur, Echtheit und Herkunft nachzuweisen, sondern auch ein vollständig transparentes und allumfassendes Herstellungs- und Lagersystem vom Feld bis zur Flasche zu dokumentieren. Nie war ein Whisky transparenter, was seine Erzeugung betrifft.

Der Whisky

Die Ardnamurchan Distillery produziert zwei charakteristische Spirituosenstile, einen getorften und einen ungetorften. Ardnamurchan wurde entwickelt, um einen vollmundigen Single Malt herzustellen, der geschmacklich seiner Herkunft (West Highland) treu bleibt – ein Gesamtgeschmacksprofil, das von dieser Region erwartet wird: sanfter Torfrauch, reichhaltige ölige und dunkler Honignoten und Fruchtaromatik, Chilipfeffer, Meersalz und etwas mehr Rauch im Abgang.

Der erste Ardnamurchan Single Malt wurde im September 2020 weltweit erfolgreich veröffentlicht.
Der New Make reift vollständig in den Lagern auf der Halbinsel, hauptsächlich in amerikanischen und europäischen Eichenfässern, Ex-Sherryfässern und Ex-Bourbonfässern aus amerikanischer Eiche.

Willkommen zur 298. Folge der Whiskyvideos und Podcasts der Woche. Wie immer bringen wir in ihr Beiträge aus dem deutschen Sprachraum zum „Wasser des Lebens“, die uns von den Vloggern und Podcastern zugesendet wurden. In den Videos werden sowohl neue als auch ältere Abfüllungen verkostet – alles nach dem eigenen Ermessen der Verkoster und ohne kommerziellen Hintergrund.
